Anyone else got shorted on their NY unemployment refund? Mine was nearly 60% less than expected

So I checked my bank account this morning and finally saw a deposit from NY unemployment. It's been 3 months since they told me I qualified for a tax refund adjustment on my benefits from last year. The problem is, they only deposited $842 when the letter clearly said I was supposed to get around $2100! Has this happened to anyone else? I've been trying to call them for 2 days straight but can't get through to a human being. The automated system just keeps giving me the runaround. I double-checked all my paperwork and my calculations match what their letter said I should receive. I even recalculated with my tax guy who confirmed the amount should be higher. The weird thing is that there's no explanation whatsoever - just a deposit with a reference number. No breakdown of how they calculated it or anything. Starting to wonder if its some kind of mistake or if they're just hoping people won't notice and accept whatever they get. Any advice on how to actually talk to someone about this?

I got $736 instead of the $1890 mentioned in my determination letter. Called like 40 times and couldn't get thru. The whole system is a dumpster fire at this point 🔥

what did you end up doing? did you ever get the rest of your money?

After weeks of trying to reach them, I finally got through using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically wait on hold for you and connect you with an agent when one is available. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - they found that my refund was partially held back due to an unresolved claim flag. The agent fixed it on the spot and I got the rest of my money in 3 days. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

Freya Larsen

•

no catch honestly - they just dial for you and call you when they get someone. saved me literally hours of hold time. my issue was that they had flagged my account for review which was holdin up part of my refund

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? the unemployment system is unfixable

I was skeptical too but it worked for me. They don't fix your claim - they just get you connected to a real person who can. That was the impossible part for me.

So does this actually work? I've been trying to get through for weeks about my refund being $450 short.

It worked for me! The woman I spoke with actually explained that there was a calculation error affecting a bunch of refunds. She put in a correction request right on the call.

The same EXACT thing happened to me!!! I was supposed to get $1654 and they sent me $598. When I finally got someone on the phone after calling for 3 days straight (took a sick day from work just to call), they said there was a "system calculation error" and theyd need to review my case. Still waiting for them to fix it, that was 2 weeks ago.

OMG THIS HAPPENED TO MEEEE! I got barely 40% of what my letter said. I'm so mad I could scream. Been calling and emailing for weeks with no response. NY unemployment is the absolute worst.

Heres what I know from working with an advocate group on this issue: there's a widespread calculation error in their system that's affecting refund amounts for claims processed between February and May. The system is miscalculating the tax withholding portion for some reason. You need to talk to a tier 2 claims specialist (not just a regular agent) to get it fixed. The best ways to get this resolved are: 1. Keep detailed records of your original claim amount, what you received, and any communication from them 2. Try calling right when they open at 8am or just before they close at 4:30pm - those times have less wait 3. Use a service like claimyr.com that waits on hold for you and connects you when an agent is available 4. Specifically ask for a "recalculation request" when you speak to them. This triggers a different protocol than just asking why the amount is wrong 5. If you still can't get through, contact your state assembly member's office. They have direct lines to unemployment office liaisons I've helped several people get their full refund amounts after initially being shorted. The good news is they ARE fixing these when people bring them to their attention, but you have to be persistent. Don't give up!

Not to be that guy, but have you checked if they took out money for any overpayments from last year? That happened to me - they reduced my refund because I apparently had an overpayment from 2021 that I never knew about. Might be worth checking.

How would I check for overpayments? Nothing in my account shows that

Log into your account online, go to payment history, and look for any negative adjustments. Also check your message inbox - they usually send a notice about overpayments (tho sometimes they never send it lol

they're supposed to notify you before taking $ for overpayments but the NY system is so broken they often dont. happened to me too.

Literally everybody I know got shorted on their refund. My theory is they're doing it on purpose hoping most folks dont notice or follow up. It's a cash grab.

Im not normally conspiracy minded but with how many people are reporting the exact same issue... makes you wonder 🤔

My friend works for the state (not unemployment but diff dept) and says its more likely incompetence than malice. Their systems are from like 1995

Have u tried going to ur state rep? I was in the same boat (got $905 instead of $2300) and after 6 weeks of no response I contacted my assemblyman's office. They have a dedicated liaison with unemployment and got it resolved in 8 days. Got the rest of my refund last Friday.

they screwed up my refund amount too but i managed to talk to someone after using claimyr.com to get through the phone maze. agent told me there was a calculation error affecting tax refunds and they're working thru the backlog of fixing them. she put in request to correct mine on the spot - worth calling if u can get thru!

check your 1099-G info against what they sent you as a refund amount. sometimes they calculate based on different numbers than what's on your tax paperwork. happened to me and I had to send in copies of the original forms to prove what i was owed. big hassle but eventually got the right amount.

Anybody else notice that almost EVERYBODY is getting exactly 38-42% less than they're supposed to? Makes me think it's a systematic error not random mistakes. Almost like some calculation is consistently wrong.

0 coins

Yep, got 41% less than my letter amount. Definitely seems like a pattern.

mine was 39% short! definitely not a coincidence

•

wow i didn't even realize that but mine is about 40% off too. must be some formula they're using wrong

its a mess but there is hope! I was in the same situation. Got $670 when supposed to get $1580. I tried calling for weeks with no luck, then finally used this service called claimyr that got me through to an agent. The person explained that there was a system-wide calculation error they're fixing case by case. She put in a request and I got the rest of my refund 2 weeks later. Check them out at claimyr.com - totally worth it!

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work. i've wasted enough $ on 'solutions

0 coins

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my friend told me about it. Not a hack, they literally just wait on hold for you. When an agent picks up, they call you. that's it. but whatever, stay on hold all day if you want lol

FWIW I used them too and it worked. honestly felt stupid for not knowing about it sooner after wasting days on hold

The NY DOL is running on outdated systems that cant properly calculate these refunds. My friend who works there says theyre completely overwhelmed and prioritizing new claims over fixing old ones. Your best bet is to call and ask specifically for the "tax refund adjustment team" - thats the special unit handling these issues.
