Has anyone actually got their NY unemployment tax refund after getting the letter?

So I received this letter from NYSDOL about 3 months ago saying I qualified for a tax refund adjustment because of some unemployment benefits from last year. The letter said I should get the payment within 4-6 weeks. Well, it's been more than 12 weeks now and nothing has shown up in my account. I've tried calling the unemployment office but can't get through to anyone who knows anything about this. I've checked my payment history on the website and there's nothing there about a refund. I even double checked that my direct deposit info is correct. Has anyone else actually received their unemployment tax refund payment? Getting pretty frustrated since I could really use that money right now.

I'm in the EXACT same situation! Got the letter in July saying I'd get about $780 in 4-6 weeks. It's now October and absolutely nothing. I've called like 30 times and either can't get through or get someone who has no idea what I'm talking about. The online portal shows nothing about any refund being processed. So frustrating.

Glad I'm not the only one! How long have you been waiting now? Mine was supposed to be around $850.

Going on 14 weeks now since I got the letter. This is ridiculous. No way to check status or anything.

Same boat guys. got my letter in August, supposed to get $920, and here we are with nothing. NY unemployment system is a total joke 🤡

After weeks of getting nowhere with the regular phone number, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual person at unemployment. They confirmed my refund was approved but stuck in some processing queue. Got my payment 3 days later! Seriously it was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. They basically call on your behalf and stay on hold, then when someone answers they connect you. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides this one person? 🤔

yeah i used it last month when my claim was stuck in pending for 6 weeks. got through to someone in about 90 mins and they fixed my issue on the spot. it was the only way I could talk to a live agent

YES! I actually got mine last week! Took almost 4 months after getting the letter though. Never got any notification, it just showed up in my bank account. The weird thing is it was a paper check even though all my regular unemployment was direct deposit. Maybe check your mail?

Ok so I work with someone who used to work at NYSDOL (not me giving unemployment advice on my lunch break lol). She said these refunds are going out in batches by the last digit of your SSN. They're only on like digits 0-3 right now. And there's a huge backlog because of some system upgrade they did in August that messed things up. So if your SSN ends in 7-9, you might be waiting another month or two.

Thanks for this info! Mine ends in 6 so I guess I still have a while to wait... 😩

That actually makes sense because my SSN ends in 2 and I got mine already, but my husband's ends in 8 and he's still waiting.

wait this is actually useful info! my SSN ends in 1 and i got mine 2 weeks ago. The system working in order is literally the most organized thing NY unemployment has ever done lol

Here's what I learned after FINALLY getting through to someone after 2+ hours on hold. The refunds are real, but they're super backed up. Some issues: 1) The system that handles tax refunds is completely separate from regular unemployment 2) If you had ANY discrepancy in your tax forms vs what NYSDOL reported, your refund gets flagged for manual review 3) They're processing these separately from regular claims so the regular agents often don't have access to status info 4) If you've moved or changed banks since filing, there can be issues with payment delivery What worked for me was using claimyr.com to get through to an agent, then specifically asking to be transferred to the tax adjustment department. Regular agents can't help. I got transferred to a special team and they resolved my issue in minutes. My payment was processed the next day. Don't bother with emails or the online message system - they're overwhelmed. Phone is the only way to get this fixed if you're waiting too long. Hope this helps someone! This system is maddening but there is a way through!

I get the skepticism, but it's literally just a service that calls and waits on hold for you. Then it calls your phone when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of hold music. But you do you!

Thank you for the detailed explanation! Quick question - did you have to provide any specific info to the tax adjustment team?

Just my claim ID, last 4 of SSN, and DOB for identity verification. Then they looked up my tax adjustment claim.

I filed a complaint with the NY State Comptroller's office after waiting 4 months. Miraculously got my refund 2 weeks later. May be worth a try if you've been waiting forever.

That's a good idea! Do you have a link or contact info for filing a complaint?

Sure, here you go: https://www.osc.state.ny.us/investigations/file-complaint (just select "state agency complaint" on the form

Saw on the news today that they're planning to have all refunds processed by end of the year. So we might be waiting a while still... 😑

Wait what letter???? I was on unemployment last year and never got any letter about a tax refund. Now I'm wondering if I missed something important...

Adriana Cohn

The letters only went to people who filed their taxes before the American Rescue Plan passed. If you filed after that, the tax break was already included in your original refund.

Ahh thank you! That makes sense - I filed pretty late last year.

my cousin works for the state (not unemployment specifically) and she told me they had some massive computer system crash in August that lost a bunch of payment processing data. they've been trying to rebuild it from backups but it's taking forever. not sure if that's affecting these refunds but wouldn't be surprised

This tracks. I was supposed to get mine in August and nothing yet. Honestly NY unemployment couldn't organize a one-car parade 🤦‍♀️

has anyone tried contacting their state representative about this? sometimes they can light a fire under these agencies

I did! I contacted my assemblyman's office and they have a staff person who deals with unemployment issues. They took my info 2 weeks ago and said they'd look into it. Haven't heard back yet but worth a try!

another day, another reason why NY unemployment is absolute garbage. I'm still waiting for mine too, letter came in June, no money in sight. at this point I'll believe it when I see it

I got mine! But here's the weird thing - the amount was about $200 less than what the letter said I would get. No explanation whatsoever. Anyone else have this happen?

0 coins

-

Axel Far

Yes! Mine was about $115 less than the letter stated. When I finally got someone on the phone using claimyr.com, they said it was because of some adjustment to the calculation. Didn't really explain it well though.

Pro tip: call right when they open at 8am. I got through after only 20 minutes on hold that way. They told me my refund was scheduled for next week. Worth trying if you're desperate!

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this Claimyr thing different? anyone with actual experience?

I was super skeptical too but it actually worked for me. It's just an automated system that waits on hold and then calls you when a person answers. Saved me from losing my mind listening to that awful hold music for hours.

I tried it yesterday and it worked exactly as advertised. Got connected to an agent who fixed my issue that's been pending for months. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast.
