Has anyone in NY unemployment received their tax refund from the IRS yet?
So I filed my taxes in February this year and included my unemployment income from 2022. I know the IRS announced they're doing some kind of automatic adjustment/refund for taxes paid on unemployment benefits, but I haven't seen anything yet. Its been 4 months now since they announced this! My account on the IRS website still shows nothing about an additional refund. I claimed about $13,400 in unemployment last year after being laid off from my construction job. Anyone from New York actually get their unemployment tax refund yet? If so, how long did it take? Starting to wonder if I need to call them or if I'm just being impatient...

I got mine about two weeks ago. Filed back in March, had about $9,700 in ny unemployment benefits for 2022. The extra refund just showed up in my account with no warning! Didn't get any notifications or anything. Check your bank account, maybe it's already there?

Ugh I checked again this morning and nothing. Did yours show up as pending first or just appear? And did you get a letter or anything after?

Just appeared randomly! Got a letter in the mail like 5 days AFTER the deposit lol. Classic IRS efficiency 🙄

After spending nearly 3 weeks trying to reach the IRS on their normal number, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with a live agent to my phone in like 20 minutes. Talking to the agent got my refund processed finally! It was the only way I could get any answers about my unemployment tax refund. They have a YouTube video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Sounds suspiciously convenient 🤔 You actually try this?

Yeah I was skeptical too but I was desperate after wasting so many hours on hold. talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, totally worth it

Not a scam - they just call and wait on hold for you then connect you when a human picks up. Saved me from losing my mind on hold music lol

I've been burned by so many 'miracle solutions' before... what makes this different than all the other unemployment hacks that never work?

It's just a calling service, nothing magical. They don't do anything with your claim - they just save you from the hold time so you can actually talk to someone. That's it.

Still waiting on mine too. Its ridiculous how the IRS operates. Meanwhile they expect us to pay them instantly if we owe 🤬

So from what I understand (I used to work for a tax prep company), these unemployment tax refunds are being processed in batches and they're prioritizing the simplest returns first. If you have a complicated return with multiple income sources, dependents, or deductions, you'll be in a later batch. They're estimating it could take through the end of summer for everyone to get processed.

That actually makes sense for my situation - I had a W2 job for part of the year then unemployment and also some 1099 gig work. thx for explaining!

This is really helpful info. Do you know if having claimed the standard deduction vs itemizing affects the processing time?

Yes! Standard deduction returns are getting processed much faster than itemized ones. The system has to recalculate everything when there are itemized deductions.

I'm in the EXACT same boat as you. Filed in early February, claimed about $15,200 in unemployment, and radio silence from the IRS about any additional refund. My brother got his already but he filed in April! Makes zero sense.

It's so frustrating! Like is there a method to their madness or just total chaos? 😫

TOTAL CHAOS. I've called the IRS 3 times and got 3 completely different answers about timeline.

For anyone still waiting on their unemployment tax refund, I've put together what worked for me after weeks of frustration: First, check your transcript on the IRS website - it often shows pending adjustments before they hit your bank. You need to look for a code 971 or 290. Second, if nothing shows up there, calling is your best bet BUT we all know how impossible that is. After 15+ attempts and hours of hold music, I used Claimyr.com and actually got through to a human! They just wait on hold for you and connect you when someone picks up. Third, when you talk to the IRS, ask specifically about the "unemployment compensation exclusion adjustment" - using those exact words. Many agents will give you generic info if you're not specific. Fourth, if they tell you it's "in processing" ask for an estimated completion date and get the agent's ID number. Fifth, if it's been more than 16 weeks since the IRS announced the adjustments (mid-March), you can request they expedite your case due to financial hardship. This worked for me - got my unemployment tax refund 10 days after speaking with them. Hope this helps someone!

Just tried looking at my transcript and I'm completely lost. Where exactly do I find these codes?

Look for the "Account Transcript" (not Return Transcript). Scroll down to the transactions section and look for recent dates with those code numbers.

Is Claimyr actually worth it? Seems like just another way to get money from desperate people.

It was for me - I spent way more in wasted time and frustration trying to call myself. Got through in one attempt with them vs my 15+ failed tries.

Anybody else notice that the amount they got back was way less than expected? I calculated I should get around $1200 back but only got $780.

YES!! They're not explaining the calculations at all. I think they're applying some formula that doesn't match what tax software calculated.

They might be adjusting other credits or deductions when they recalculate. The unemployment exclusion can change your AGI which ripples through your whole return.

Pro tip: check the IRS2Go app if you have it. Sometimes it updates before the website does. That's how I found out mine was coming.

If your NY unemployment claim was in 2023 and not 2022, you won't get anything. The adjustment is only for specific tax years. Make sure you're actually eligible before waiting for nothing.

Anyone else worried they'll send the refund to an old bank account? I changed banks since I filed 😬

If that happens they'll mail a paper check to your address on file. Happened to my cousin.

Called the IRS yesterday (took 3 attempts but finally got through). They told me my unemployment tax refund was processed on July 6th but could take 2-5 weeks to actually get deposited. Totally ridiculous system.
