Anyone know when NY unemployment tax refunds are coming for those who filed in March?
I've been trying to figure out when the next batch of unemployment tax refunds will be deposited. I filed my taxes back in March and included about $13,600 of unemployment income that I received last year. I know they're supposed to be refunding some taxes on unemployment benefits, but I haven't received anything yet. The IRS website just says they're processing refunds throughout summer and fall in batches, but gives no specifics. Has anyone who filed around the same time gotten their refund yet? Or does anyone have info on which filing dates they're currently processing? The waiting game is killing me since I could really use that money right now.

I filed in February and just got my refund last week. It was about $1,200 for the unemployment tax break. I think they're working through them in order of when you filed, so if you filed in March you should be in the next batch or two. The IRS is moving slow as molasses though 🐌

•That gives me hope! Did you get any kind of notice before it showed up, or did it just appear in your account?

•No notice at all, just randomly checked my account and it was there. they sent a letter like 2 weeks AFTER the deposit lol. classic IRS 🙄

•Did you file simple or complicated return? wondering if that affects the timeline

•Pretty simple return. Just W2 and unemployment. No dependents or anything fancy.

I was stuck waiting forever too, but I ended up using this service called claimyr.com that helped me get through to someone at unemployment who answered all my questions. Talking to an agent got my refund issue resolved so fast, it was the only way I could get actual info instead of the generic website updates. Check out this video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after waiting 3 months. it actually connects you with a real person at unemployment. best money I ever spent to get my questions answered immediately instead of waiting months.

•another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

•I get the cynicism, but this isn't some magic fix - they just handle the hold time so you don't have to. That's it. Was worth it for me when I needed answers.

•wait I'm confused - is this for tax refunds from the IRS or for unemployment questions? they're different things

•You're right - I had both issues. For unemployment questions it helped me talk to NYSDOL. For tax refund status you'd need to reach IRS, but sometimes unemployment can verify if they've sent your info to IRS correctly.

My understanding is they're doing it in batches based on complexity not just filing date. Simple returns first, then ones with kids/dependents, then ones with other tax credits, etc. I filed in early April with a pretty complex return and got mine 2 weeks ago - about $960.

I'm still waiting too and filed back in FEBRUARY. This whole thing is a joke. The IRS is so backed up from the pandemic they have literally millions of returns still unprocessed. I called them 3 times and got 3 different answers about when I might see my refund. Good luck to all of us 😤

•I feel your pain. The system is completely overwhelmed. Took me 9 months to get all my unemployment issues sorted last year. now this tax mess.

Here's what I know for sure about the unemployment tax refunds: The IRS is processing them in phases and batches throughout summer and fall. They started with single filers with simple returns, then moved to married couples and more complex situations. They're currently (as of last week) working on returns filed in March and April with moderate complexity. My tax guy says they're about 40% through the backlog. The average refund has been around $1,200 for these unemployment tax adjustments, but it varies widely based on your tax bracket and how much unemployment you received. Most people get NO advance notice - the money just shows up in your account. You'll get a letter about 2-4 weeks AFTER the deposit. If you need to check status, good luck getting through to the IRS phone line. I had success using claimyr.com to get through to unemployment, which at least confirmed they had reported my income correctly to the IRS. The IRS 'Where's My Refund' tool is USELESS for these adjustments - it only works for your original refund. Hope this helps someone! This waiting game is brutal.

•This is super helpful, thank you! How do you know they're working on March/April filings now? Did you get an update from somewhere?

•My accountant has a dashboard that shows general processing timelines. Plus I'm in a FB group where people post when they receive theirs, and there's a definite pattern showing March filers getting theirs now.

•Did your accountant say anything about people who amended their returns instead of waiting? I got impatient and filed an amendment in May 🤦♂️

Paolo Ricci
•Oof, amendments are taking even longer - like 20+ weeks according to my accountant. They're asking people NOT to amend for just the unemployment tax break because it's creating duplicate work. Might be faster to call and see if you can withdraw the amendment.

The NY unemployment system AND the IRS are both complete dumpster fires right now. I've been waiting on both unemployment backpay AND a tax refund for months. I'm bout to lose my apartment and these government agencies are moving like its 1950 with paper forms 🤬

Can someone explain what this tax refund is even for? I'm so confused. I got unemployment last year but didnt know there was a special refund coming?

•The American Rescue Plan made the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits tax-free for 2020 (if your income was under $150k). If you filed before this passed, the IRS is supposed to automatically adjust your return and send you back the taxes you paid on that portion.

•OMG WHAT? I had no idea! I got like $15k in unemployment last year and paid taxes on all of it. So I should be getting money back???
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
•Yep! Depending on your tax bracket, you should get back whatever percentage you paid on that first $10,200. Could be anywhere from like $700-1500 probably.

I filed in March and got my unemployment tax refund two days ago. $1,142 deposited directly to my account. There was no update on the IRS website or anything - it just appeared. I think you're probably in the current batch they're processing.

According to my friend who works at H&R Block, if you filed in March you should be in the batch that's processing now and should see something in the next 2-3 weeks. They're way behind schedule tho

•Can your friend see if they've processed specific returns? I filed in February and still nothing 😭

NebulaNomad
•Nah he just has general info on which batches they're processing, not individual returns. But February should definitely have been processed by now, might be worth calling to make sure there's no hold on your account.

Anyone else get a letter saying they're reviewing your return that's delaying the process? I got that about a month ago and still nothing.

Check your bank accounts people! My wife and I both had unemployment last year. My adjustment came 3 weeks ago, hers came TODAY. We filed jointly in early March. No emails, no updates, just random deposits from the IRS.

LPT: If you're still waiting on your unemployment tax refund, don't call the regular IRS number - call the Tax Advocate Service instead at 877-777-4778. They can actually look up your specific case and tell you if there are any issues or approximately when to expect your payment. The regular reps have zero visibility into the unemployment adjustment process.

•Yeah they're slammed too. Best times to call are right when they open (7am EST) or during lunch (1-2pm EST). Fewer callers then.
