Anyone received their ny unemployment tax refund yet?

I filed my taxes back in February and I know I'm eligible for the unemployment tax refund since I paid taxes on all my benefits last year. I've been checking my bank account daily since June when they said payments would start going out, but still nothing. The IRS website shows no updates on my account and when I try calling it's just automated messages that don't help. Has anyone in New York actually received their unemployment tax refund yet? If you did, how long did it take and did you get any notification before it showed up? Starting to wonder if I'm missing something or if they just haven't processed mine yet.

Adriana Cohn

Same boat here. Filed in March, supposed to get around $1,200 back but nothin yet. The IRS website is useless and trying to call is like talking to a brick wall. What a joke this whole process has been.

I heard they're doing it in waves based on complexity. Single filers first, then married, then complicated returns last. Where do you fall?

I'm single with a pretty simple return. No dependents, just one W2 and unemployment. Should be in their first wave but still nothing 🤷‍♂️

I was in the same situation last month - checking everyday with no updates. I finally used this service called claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual human at the IRS after weeks of failed attempts. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - they found my refund was stuck in review. Got my deposit 5 days after the call! sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this or is it just another scam? 🤔

Not a scam at all. I was skeptical too but after 3 months of waiting I was desperate. They just connect you with an actual agent so you can ask about your specific case. My refund was stuck because they needed to verify something.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

They don't do anything with your refund - they just get you past the phone tree hell to talk to a real person at the IRS. You handle the conversation yourself once connected.

I tried it yesterday actually. Was on hold for like 20 mins then got connected with someone who actually helped. My refund had been flagged for review bcuz of a mismatch with my address.

I GOT MINE!!!! Showed up yesterday - $1,478 direct deposited with ZERO notification beforehand. They didn't email, call, nothing... just appeared in my account. Filed in early April, single filer. There's hope y'all!

omg finally someone who actually got it! did you do anything special or just wait it out?

Just waited but I did create an account on the IRS site to check my transcript. Nothing showed there until after it was deposited tho lol

This gives me hope! Did yours say anything specific when it deposited? Like a code or reference number?

It just said "IRS TREAS TAX REF" and then a bunch of numbers. Didn't specify it was for unemployment specifically, but the amount matched what I calculated.

The NY unemployment system continues to be a dumpster fire 💯 I'm still waiting too. Called the IRS and after TWO HOURS on hold they told me "just keep waiting" 🤡

So here's what I've learned from countless hours of research and frustration with this process: The IRS is processing these unemployment tax refunds in batches based on multiple factors: - Filing status (single filers first) - Complexity of return (simpler returns first) - Income level (lower incomes seem to be processed first) - Whether you amended your return or waited for automatic adjustment For NY specifically, there's an additional layer because some people are eligible for both federal AND state refunds. The federal comes first, then NY processes their adjustment after receiving data from the IRS. If you're still waiting, here are your best options: 1. Check your tax transcript on the IRS website (not the refund status tool) 2. If you can't get through on the phone, use claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold with the IRS and calls you when an agent is available 3. Don't file an amended return if you haven't already - it will likely delay things 4. Check your bank account for deposits labeled "IRS TREAS TAX REF" I was in the same boat, but finally got mine after using Claimyr to reach someone who could explain exactly what was happening with my return. Worth every penny to not spend hours on hold.

This is super helpful, thank you! Just checked my transcript and there's a code 971 from last week - any idea what that means?

Code 971 usually means they sent you a notice. Could be good or bad. If you see a 846 code that's the refund issued date!

I waited 4 months and nothing. Called every week. Finally got my $1,800 refund after threatening to contact my congressman lol. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with these people.

Who did you even threaten? The automated system? 😂 I can't even get a human on the phone

Used claimyr.com to get through to a real person. Then I mentioned I'd be contacting my rep if they couldn't resolve it. Suddenly they found my "missing" paperwork.

anyone know if you needed to have filed by a certain date to be eligible? i filed in May, wondering if i missed some cutoff

0 coins

-

Miguel Harvey

The cutoff was the standard tax filing deadline - May 17th this year. So you should be good!

Does anyone know if you get this automatically or if you had to apply for it separately? I'm confused about the whole process tbh

0 coins

-

Oliver Cheng

It's automatic if you filed before they announced the tax break. If you filed after they announced it, it should have been calculated in your original refund.

Ok so I filed in February so I should get an additional refund automatically? Sweet!

Yep but "automatic" apparently means "whenever they feel like it" 🙄

im so tired of the ny unemployment system and the irs both. been waiting since march. called last week and they said "we're still processing" WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG???

Kevin Bell

Pro tip: create an account on the IRS website and check your transcript. Mine showed the refund was processed a week before it actually hit my account. Look for code 846.

I tried this but the verification process is a nightmare. They wanted a credit card statement that I don't have because I use debit 🤦‍♂️

Yeah their verification sucks. Try the phone transcript request instead - it's old school but works if online won't.

I'm confused about whether NY state is doing additional refunds on top of the federal ones. Anyone know?

0 coins

-

Felicity Bud

Yes - NY follows the federal tax treatment of unemployment. So if you get a federal refund, you should also get a NY state refund if you paid NY taxes.

Felix Grigori

Thx! Any idea if they come together or separately?

Separately for sure. State usually comes a few weeks after federal in my experience.

This whole process is RIDICULOUS. They take our money instantly but take months to give refunds. I'm still waiting since February and I know people who filed AFTER me who already got theirs!

My sister got hers in June but I'm still waiting. We filed the same day with similar incomes. Makes no sense!

IMPORTANT INFO: I just got off the phone with an IRS rep (used claimyr.com to avoid the 3 hour wait). They told me they're still processing unemployment refunds and will be through the SUMMER. Don't panic if you haven't received yours yet. They're going through them systematically.

0 coins

-

Aisha Jackson

thank you for the update! did they say anything about what order they're processing them in?

0 coins

-

21d

Adrian Connor

They said they're still doing them by complexity not just file date. So if your return had other credits or deductions it might take longer.

Anyone know the number to call for this specific issue? I've called the general IRS number like 20 times and just get the "high call volume" message then it hangs up 🤬

0 coins

-

Lilly Curtis

There's no specific number for the unemployment refunds. You have to call the main line. I used claimyr.com after weeks of failing to get through and they got me to an agent within an hour.
