Anyone getting their ny unemployment tax refund on the 20th? Seems like some people already got theirs

Got notification that I'm getting a tax refund for overpaid unemployment taxes from last year. My account says it's scheduled to be deposited on May 20th, but I'm seeing posts all over Facebook that people already got their deposit today. Anyone else waiting until the 20th or did you already get yours? The email said they're refunding around $1,650 to me but nothing in my account yet. Starting to worry since seems like everyone else already got theirs? Called the ny unemployment number but couldn't get through to anyone (shocker).

I got mine today! Was surprised cause the letter said April 22nd but it showed up in my account this morning. Was about $1,420. Check your bank again, maybe its pending?

Just checked again and nothing yet 😩 Did yours show as pending first or just appear?

0 coins

Just showed up! No pending or anything. My bank usually processes deposits early morning tho

yall are lucky! I'm still waiting and mine says the 20th too. getting nervous

After weeks of trying to reach someone about my refund date, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a real person at unemployment. Talking to an agent got my refund processed so much faster than waiting. They also explained that refunds are sent out in batches, so some people get them early while others have to wait until the official date. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds fishy af... another service promising to fix unemployment problems? 🙄 does this actually work?

0 coins

It actually did work for me! They just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. When an agent picks up, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me hours of frustration

0 coins

not another 'miracle solution'... what makes this different from all the other scams out there?

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it's just a calling service. They don't ask for any unemployment info - they just connect you to an agent. Talking to a live person made all the difference for my refund situation.

0 coins

I actually tried this too after seeing it recommended here. Got connected in about 45 mins when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent I talked to fixed my issue right away.

0 coins

hmm maybe ill check it out. been on hold for literally 3 hours today already 🤬

0 coins

Yeah, that's exactly why I used it. Was getting nowhere with the regular number. claimyr.com saved me so much time and frustration

Mine came today even though it said the 20th. But my friends still waiting for hers. I think theres different banks processing at different times. whats ur bank?

0 coins

I'm with Chase. You?

0 coins

I got BoA. Maybe thats the difference? Chase sometimes takes longer i hear

0 coins

I'm with Chase too and nothing yet 😭

The state is sending them out in batches. If your letter says the 20th, it might not come till then or even a day or two after. The whole ny unemployment system is SO inefficient. I wouldn't panic yet - they're usually slow but eventually get it right.

0 coins

LOL welcome to ny unemployment where nothing happens when they say it will 🤣 I was told March 29th and got mine April 7th. Just how they roll. You'll get it eventually but the dates are basically meaningless

0 coins

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. So frustrating!

0 coins

yeah its The Worst™️ but hang in there

0 coins

Check what your status says online. If it says "processed" you should get it soon. If it says "pending review" you might be waiting longer. The system is so backed up rn.

0 coins

Where do you check that? I can't find that info anywhere on my account

0 coins

Go to your dashboard, then payment history, then click on the specific refund payment. Should show status there.

0 coins

Thanks, I'll try that!

This has been such a MESS. My refund amount changed 3 times before I finally got it. First they said $890, then $1220, then $1450, and I ended up with $1375. Make sure to double check the math when you get yours.

I contacted my local state representative about this last year when they were taking forever on my regular benefits. They have staff dedicated to unemployment issues and can sometimes speed things up. Might be worth a try if your refund doesn't show up by the 20th.

0 coins

THIS!!! My rep got my issue fixed in 2 days after I spent months getting nowhere.

0 coins

how do you even find your state rep? i'm so lost with all this government stuff

Just google "who is my NY state representative" and put in your address. Then call their office and ask to speak to whoever handles unemployment cases.

Here's my comprehensive advice after dealing with NY unemployment for way too long: First, don't panic about the date discrepancy. The system always gives official dates that are later than when some payments actually process. Different banks also handle deposits differently - some process immediately, others take 1-3 business days. If you're really concerned, you have several options: 1. Keep calling the regular number (good luck with that though) 2. Try calling right when they open (7:30am) for slightly better odds 3. Use claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold for you then connects you to an agent when they pick up. Saved me HOURS of frustration. 4. Contact your state assembly member's office - they have special channels to unemployment 5. Check if your bank shows any pending deposits In my experience, these refunds almost always come through eventually, but the timeline is rarely what they initially promise. The system is just overwhelmed and inefficient. Hang in there!

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I'll try calling early tomorrow, and if that doesn't work maybe I'll check out that Claimyr thing.

This is great advice. I've been through this rodeo too many times with NY unemployment and it's always a waiting game.

anybody know if these refunds are taxable for next year? Or since it's a refund of taxes we already paid, we don't have to pay taxes on it again?

0 coins

Should not be taxable since it's returning money that was incorrectly taken out as tax in the first place. But who knows with these clowns running the system 🤡

0 coins

thx that's what I thought but wasn't sure. last thing I need is another tax surprise next year

0 coins

i got mine 2 days ago but it was less than what the letter said by about $75. anyone else notice discrepancies in the amount?

0 coins

Yes! Mine was off by $47. When I called (used claimyr.com to get through), they said it was because of some adjustment formula they had to apply. Makes no sense but whatever.

0 coins

typical ny unemployment math 🙄 they never get the numbers right

0 coins

Pro tip: if you're waiting on money from the government, never count on it arriving on time. I've learned to just be pleasantly surprised when it actually shows up lol

0 coins

whers the best place to check for updates? The website, the app, or calling?

0 coins

Calling is the only way to get real answers but good luck getting through without something like claimyr.com or spending your whole day on hold

0 coins

ugh why is everything so complicated with them

0 coins

Am I the only one who didn't even know we were getting tax refunds from unemployment? How did you find out about this??

0 coins

They sent emails out a few weeks ago to people who are eligible. Check your spam folder maybe?

0 coins

thanks will do! my email is a disaster so i probably missed it

0 coins

Anyone else sick of how NY unemployment just does whatever they want with no accountability? We're all just sitting here hoping they eventually do what they promised 🤮

0 coins

PREACH 👏 I'm still waiting on backpay from 6 months ago

0 coins

It's literally the worst system. My friend in NJ got her refund in like 3 days no problem.

0 coins

Quick update: just got mine today (was supposed to be the 22nd). So maybe they're releasing them in waves? Keep checking your accounts!

0 coins

That gives me hope! Just checked again and still nothing but maybe tomorrow 🤞
