Federal tax refunds on ny unemployment finally hitting bank accounts - check your transcripts!
Just a heads up for everyone! I noticed many people are getting their refunds for the tax adjustment on unemployment benefits. The federal credit for the first $12,000 of UI not being taxed is showing up on tax transcripts as of yesterday. I just checked mine and saw the adjustment was processed on May 19th with a direct deposit scheduled for next Tuesday! If you filed taxes early and paid taxes on all your unemployment from last year, check your IRS transcript online or watch your bank account. My refund amount is $1,124 which I definitely wasn't expecting this month. Anyone else seeing their refunds come through yet?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!! Just checked my transcript and I'm getting $836 back next week! Wouldn't have even known to look if you hadn't mentioned it. This will literally save me from late rent next month.

ā¢How did you check your transcript? I've been trying to create an account on the IRS website but keeps giving me errors š©

ā¢You need to go to irs.gov/transcripts and make sure you have a credit card, mortgage, or loan account number to verify your identity. That was my issue at first.

After months of trying to reach someone at ny unemployment about my missing payments last year, I finally found this service called claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual human at the unemployment office in like 30 mins! Amazing after spending weeks calling myself. When I finally talked to the agent, they helped fix my account and I got all my backpay. They also mentioned this tax refund was coming but I hadn't seen it yet. Just checked my transcript after seeing this post and sure enough - $922 coming next week! Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, and now this refund is coming too. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

ā¢Is this for real? I've been trying to reach ny unemployment for 3 weeks with no luck.

ā¢Absolutely worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for weeks. They basically dial for you and wait on hold, then call you when they get someone. Saved me literally days of frustration.

ā¢sounds too good to be true... what's the catch? they ask for personal info or something?
0 coins
Sean Matthews
ā¢No catch that I found. They just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. When they get through to an agent, they connect you. Saved my sanity honestly.

ā¢hold up - another 'miracle solution' that actually works? in THIS economy? š¤ might have to check this out, I've been on hold for literally 4+ hours multiple times

Nothing showing up on my transcript yet š Did you file with TurboTax? I read somewhere they're doing them in batches based on when you filed and which service you used. I filed in April so maybe I'm in a later batch?

Oh wow this is huge news. Anyone know if this applies to people who collected PUA instead of regular unemployment? I was self-employed and got benefits through a different program.
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
ā¢PUA ended a while back, but yes this should apply to all unemployment income from last year including what you got from self-employment. The $12,000 exemption covers all types of unemployment.

ā¢Thanks for confirming! Just wasn't sure since everything with PUA was so different and confusing.

I've been watching for this since they passed that American Rescue Plan back in March! The IRS said they would automatically process these refunds but I was starting to think they forgot about us. Just checked my transcript and BOOM - $1,289 adjustment scheduled for deposit on May 25th! What a relief after all the unemployment drama last year.

Diego Castillo
ā¢That's awesome! Even bigger than mine. Did you have a lot withheld for taxes on your UI payments?
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
ā¢Yeah I had them withhold the full 10% from each payment cause I was worried about owing. Guess that worked out pretty well now lol

Can someone explain this like I'm 5? I got unemployment for 6 months last year but I'm confused about what this refund thing is for exactly? I filed my taxes in February if that matters.
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
ā¢Basically the COVID relief bill that passed in March made the first $12k of unemployment benefits tax-free for 2020. But since most of us had already filed our taxes by then and paid taxes on all of it, the IRS is now automatically refunding the difference. So you're getting back whatever taxes you paid on that first $12k of benefits.

Zadie Patel
ā¢Ohhhh that makes sense now! So I don't need to do anything to get it? Will just show up?
0 coins
Emma Morales
ā¢Yep! IRS is processing them automatically. You don't need to file an amended return or anything. Just make sure they have your correct direct deposit info on file.

I'm actually a tax preparer and I can confirm this is legit. The IRS is processing these unemployment compensation exclusion refunds in batches. Single filers with simpler returns are getting processed first, then married couples and more complex returns. Some key points everyone should know: ⢠The exclusion applies to the first $12,000 of unemployment benefits for individuals ($24,000 for married filing jointly) ⢠You DON'T need to file an amended return if your only change is the unemployment exclusion ⢠The IRS is recalculating your taxes automatically ⢠They're sending refunds by direct deposit if they have your bank info, otherwise by check ⢠These adjustments might make you eligible for additional credits/deductions you weren't eligible for before ⢠You CAN file an amended return if you now qualify for credits you couldn't claim before If you're still struggling to reach someone at NY unemployment about other issues, I've heard good things about claimyr.com for getting through to an agent. One of my clients used it to resolve a frozen account issue last month. Direct human assistance seems to be the only way to solve the more complex problems with the system.

ā¢This is super helpful, thank you! Do you know if they're also adjusting state tax refunds or just federal?
0 coins
Emma Morales
ā¢That's a great question. The automatic adjustment is only for federal taxes. For state taxes, many states (including NY) are requiring amended returns to be filed to claim the exclusion at the state level.
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
ā¢So we have to file amended NY state returns to get the state portion back? That seems unnecessarily complicated.
0 coins
Emma Morales
ā¢Yes, unfortunately. Each state is handling it differently. NY is requiring amended returns for the state portion. I know, it's a pain, but potentially worth it depending on your tax rate.

Ok so I checked my transcript and it shows an adjustment but no refund amount or deposit date? Anyone else seeing this or know what it means?

ā¢Look for a code 846 - that's the refund issued code. The date next to it is when they'll send the payment. The amount should be listed there too.

For anyone struggling with the overcomplicated unemployment system in NY, I feel your pain. I spent 3 months trying to get through to fix an issue with my claim last year. The phone system is a joke - I'd be on hold for hours only to get disconnected. Finally used claimyr.com after seeing it mentioned here, and they got me a callback from an actual agent within an hour. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying. The agent fixed my claim AND told me about this tax refund that was coming, which is how I knew to watch for it. My adjustment just showed up today for $912! This whole process has been such a mess but at least there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Zadie Patel
ā¢Did you have to do anything special after you got the callback? I have issues with my claim from months ago that never got resolved.

Harper Collins
ā¢When the agent called, I just explained my situation and had all my documents ready. Having a real person to talk to made ALL the difference. They were able to override whatever was blocking my claim in their system.

ā¢I've been burned by so many 'solutions' for reaching unemployment... what makes this different from just calling yourself?
0 coins
Harper Collins
ā¢The difference is they have some way to bypass the hold system. I had tried calling literally hundreds of times myself and could never get through or would be on hold for 4+ hours. With their service, I got a real person on the line same day. Totally worth it when you're desperate.

I checked my transcript and it shows nothing about this refund. Instead I have a CP2000 notice from the IRS saying I underreported my unemployment income and now owe MORE taxes. How is this fair when everyone else is getting refunds?? š”š”š”
0 coins
Emma Morales
ā¢That sounds like a different issue. The CP2000 means there was a mismatch between what you reported and what was reported to the IRS. Did you include all your unemployment on your return? If not, you'll need to respond to that notice with an explanation or corrected return.
0 coins
Kelsey Hawkins
ā¢I thought I reported everything but maybe I missed something. This is so frustrating. I'm going to need to talk to someone at the IRS to straighten this out.

Harper Collins
ā¢Good luck with that... calling the IRS is even worse than calling unemployment! Took me 2 days of calling to get through last time.

Does anyone know how to check your transcript if you don't have a credit card or loan? The IRS verification system won't let me create an account without one of those things to verify my identity.
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
ā¢You can request it by mail but that takes 5-10 business days. Or you can try calling the IRS transcript line at 800-908-9946 to have it mailed to you.

ā¢Ugh that's so annoying. Thanks for the info though.

Just an FYI for married couples - my transcript shows our adjustment but it's taking longer for joint returns. IRS said they're doing single filers first, then more complicated returns like joint filers next. So if you filed jointly, you might need to wait a bit longer.

Anyone else been trying to reach the ny unemployment office about other issues while waiting for this refund? I was having the WORST time getting anyone on the phone until I found claimyr.com. It's the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. Seriously after weeks of trying to call myself, they got me connected to an agent in like 45 minutes. The agent even knew about these tax refunds and helped me understand when mine would arrive.

ā¢another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system š does this ACTUALLY work?
0 coins
Sean Matthews
ā¢Yeah it actually does. I was just as cynical. But when you're desperate after trying for weeks and getting nowhere, it's worth a shot. The difference is they just handle the calling/waiting part for you, then connect you to the same agents you'd reach normally.

FYI my brother works at the unemployment office and says these tax refunds are coming in weekly batches through August, so don't panic if you don't see yours yet. They're working through a massive backlog.
0 coins
Diego Castillo
ā¢That's good to know! Could you ask him if there's any pattern to how they're processing them? Like alphabetical or by filing date or something?
0 coins
Gianna Scott
ā¢He said it's roughly by filing date and complexity. Single filers who filed in January/February are first. Joint returns and those with more complex situations come later.

nothing yet for me but my UI situation is already a complete disaster. been trying to resolve an issue since JANUARY where they marked me as receiving benefits i never got. now i'm probably at the end of the line for this tax thing too š

ā¢You really need to talk to someone directly about that. Have you been able to get through on the phone? If not, try claimyr.com - it's the only way I finally got my issues resolved after months of frustration.

I'm confused...is this adjustment happening automatically or do we need to file an amended return? I paid taxes on about $22,000 in unemployment last year.
0 coins
Emma Morales
ā¢It's automatic for the basic unemployment exclusion. You only need to file an amended return if the exclusion now makes you eligible for credits or deductions you couldn't claim before. With $22K in unemployment, you'd get an exclusion on just the first $12K of that.
0 coins
Alfredo Lugo
ā¢Thanks for clarifying! I'll just wait for the automatic adjustment then.

ANYONE ELSE STUCK IN PENDING FOR MONTHS ON NY UNEMPLOYMENT? This tax refund is nice but I'm still fighting to get my regular benefits from 3 months ago! System is completely broken. Can't get anyone on the phone no matter how many times I call š¤

ā¢Been there, it's the worst. After 2 months of trying, I finally used claimyr.com to get through to someone. Their service called for me and got me a callback when they reached an agent. Finally got my pending payments resolved in one call.

ā¢wait for real? i might have to try that. this is driving me insane and I'm about to be evicted if I don't get my backpay

ā¢I can second that recommendation. Used them last month after seeing it mentioned in this sub. Got a callback in about 2 hours and the agent was able to release all my pending payments. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after months of waiting.
