NY unemployment tax refund hitting accounts - $10,200 federal credit showing on transcripts
Just checked my transcript and saw the refund for the federal tax exemption on the first $12,800 of unemployment benefits finally hit!! Been waiting months for this. If you collected NY unemployment last year and paid taxes on it, you should be getting money back soon! The IRS is processing these automatically, so check your transcripts or bank accounts. Don't need to file an amended return. FINALLY getting some relief! Anyone else see this showing up yet?

Where exactly do you check this? I've been waiting for my refund too but have no idea how to see my transcript. Is there a specific website? I paid taxes on all my NY unemployment last year and could really use that money back.

•You need to go to the IRS website and request your tax transcript. Look for the 'Get Transcript Online' option. You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one. It'll show if the adjustment has been processed and when to expect the deposit.

Just to clarify some details about this tax exemption since there's often confusion: 1. This applies to your FEDERAL taxes only - up to $12,800 of unemployment compensation can be excluded from your federal taxable income for the 2024 tax year 2. New York State is also offering a similar exemption, but you'll need to watch for that separately 3. The IRS is automatically recalculating and sending refunds - most people don't need to file an amended return 4. If your income was over $168,000 (if married filing jointly) or $84,000 (single), you may not qualify for the full exemption 5. You can check your status by accessing your tax transcript at irs.gov/transcripts Refunds are being issued in batches, so don't panic if yours isn't there yet.

I've been trying ALL DAY to check my transcript but the IRS website keeps giving me errors!!! Anyone else having trouble getting through? So frustrating when you just want to see if your money is coming! I paid taxes on about $18,000 in NY unemployment last year so I should be getting a decent refund back.

•Same here! I've been trying to get through to the IRS for weeks about my refund and can't get anyone on the phone. Their website is useless too - keeps crashing or saying they can't verify my identity. I finally used Claimyr.com to get through to a live person at the IRS. They have this service where they connect you with an agent without the wait. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - saved me hours of frustration. The agent was able to tell me exactly when my refund would hit.

UPDATE: Just checked my bank account and the refund hit today! $862 back from what I paid in federal taxes on my unemployment. Check your accounts if your transcript showed the adjustment!

Does this refund come separate from your regular tax refund? I already got my normal refund in March but haven't seen anything about this unemployment tax exemption yet. Would it come as a second payment?

•Yes, this comes as a separate refund payment. The IRS is processing these adjustments after regular tax returns, so you'll receive it as a second payment. They're sending them out in batches based on the simplest returns first, so more complex returns with dependents, investment income, etc. will be processed later.

•The timing isn't based on when you filed, but rather the complexity of your return and which processing batch you fall into. The IRS announced they're working through returns through summer 2025. If you have multiple sources of income or claimed certain credits, you might be in a later batch.

Quick question - what if I already filed an amended return to claim this credit? I filed one back in February because I thought we had to. Will I get double refunded or will they catch it?

•The IRS has systems in place to prevent double refunds. If you filed an amended return AND they process the automatic adjustment, their system should flag it. Most likely, they'll either: 1. Process your amended return and ignore the automatic adjustment 2. Process the automatic adjustment and reject the amended return If by some chance you do receive two refunds for the same adjustment, you should contact the IRS, as they will eventually catch it and you could face penalties for not returning the duplicate payment.

Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5 years old? I received NY unemployment for about 8 months last year. I already filed my taxes and got a refund back. Will I get more money now? How much? Do I need to do anything? I'm so confused by all of this tax stuff.

•Here's the simple version: - If you received unemployment in 2024 and already filed your taxes, you paid tax on that money - The government decided after tax season started that the first $12,800 of unemployment shouldn't be taxed - Instead of making everyone file new tax forms, the IRS is automatically figuring out who paid too much tax - They're sending extra refunds to those people - You don't need to do anything but wait for the money to arrive - The amount depends on your tax rate, but roughly 10-24% of the unemployment amount that was exempted So if you received unemployment last year, you'll likely get some money back without doing anything.

•Thank you so much!! That makes it so clear. I was worried I'd have to file something complicated or call someone. I'll just keep an eye on my bank account then!
