Is anyone still waiting for NY unemployment tax refund after filing before the $12,500 became tax-exempt?

My wife and I filed our taxes jointly back in February, before they announced that some unemployment benefits would become non-taxable. We're supposed to get around $12,500 back from what we paid on unemployment income. The IRS said they'd automatically refund the overpaid taxes, and I was expecting it by October at the latest. It's now November and still nothing in our account. Has anybody actually received theirs yet? Getting worried since bills are piling up and we really need that money. The IRS website is useless - just says my return is still being processed when I check the status. Called twice but couldn't get through to a real person.

Still waiting on mine too. Filed in March and nothing yet. I've heard some people got theirs in September but seems most of us joint filers are still stuck waiting. The whole system is broken 🤬

Ugh that's what I was afraid of... have you tried calling them? I waste like 3 hours on hold and never got through

Yeah waste of time calling. I tried 4x and got nowhere. Apparently married filing jointly takes longer for some reason?

I'm single and still haven't gotten mine either so I don't think it's just a joint filing issue. It's just IRS being slow AF 🐌

I was struggling with the same thing - filled early February, no refund in sight. After weeks of failing to reach anyone on the phone, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with a live agent to my phone. Got everything sorted in one call - talking to an agent got my money unlocked so fast. Check out their explanation video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Yeah it worked for me - they basically just stay on hold for you and then call you when they get a human. Saved me hours of my life on hold music hell

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried everything to get through 🤔

It worked for me! After trying for weeks myself, they got me through to an agent who helped fix my return status. Worth every penny since I got a $9k refund processed

I get being skeptical, but it literally just keeps calling for you. Nothing crazy or complicated, just saves you from the headache of waiting on hold.

OK so this is what the IRS told me when I FINALLY got someone on the phone: Joint filers are being processed last, and married filing jointly with both spouses receiving unemployment is at the very end of the line. They said expect it by end of the year. Complete garbage but that's what they said.

That's ridiculous! People who need it most are getting it last? How did you even manage to get someone on the phone?

Took me 14 attempts over 3 weeks. Called at 7:59am exactly and still waited 2 hours.

For everyone still waiting - I'm in the same boat, but I found a workaround. File an amended return yourself (form 1040-X) instead of waiting for the IRS to automatically process it. I did this after waiting 5 months, and got my refund within 6 weeks of submitting the amendment.

I heard you shouldn't do this!! The IRS specifically said NOT to file an amended return for the unemployment tax exclusion. It can cause delays

That's what they SAY, but after 5+ months of waiting, what's there to lose? Worked for me and 2 friends who tried it.

Did you file the amended return online or mail it in? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

I did it through TurboTax online. Just make sure you're ONLY amending for the unemployment tax exclusion and nothing else!

Here's the full breakdown of what's happening with these unemployment tax refunds: The IRS is completely overwhelmed and processing these in batches. They started with simple returns (single filers, no dependents) and are slowly working through more complex ones. Joint filers with both people receiving unemployment are in the final batch. Your best options are: 1) Keep checking your transcript on the IRS website (not Where's My Refund) for code 290 with a negative amount 2) If you absolutely need to talk to someone, use a service like claimyr.com to get through the phone lines. They'll wait on hold and connect you to an agent when one is available. 3) If you're desperate, you can file an amended return, but there's conflicting reports about whether this helps or hurts. 4) Contact your state representative's office - they often have liaisons who can help escalate your case. Hang in there, but prepare for the possibility it might not come until December or January for joint filers.

This is really helpful! How do you check the transcript? I can only find the "where's my refund" tool.

Go to irs.gov, create an account (if you don't have one), then look for "Get Transcript Online" - you want the "Account Transcript" for 2020.

I just checked mine and saw code 290 with -$4,800 next to it from 3 weeks ago but still no money. What does that mean??

That means they've processed it and your refund is coming! Look for code 846 which is the actual refund issued date. Usually comes 1-3 weeks after the 290 code appears.

This is insane. I work FOR THE IRS and still haven't gotten my refund. We're being told internally that all refunds should be processed by end of year, but the backlog is still massive. The system is a complete dumpster fire rn not gonna lie

omg an inside source! 😱 any tips for getting ours processed faster??

Honestly? No. It's all done by computer batches and even employees can't really expedite unless there's a hardship situation (eviction, utilities being cut off, etc

is it true most NY returns are delayed because of some state tax issue?

0 coins

-

Christian Burns

Yes and no. NY has its own exclusion that doesn't perfectly match the federal one, so those returns get flagged for manual review. But that's only part of the delay.

My sister JUST got hers yesterday! Filed jointly with husband in February, both had unemployment, got about $11k back. So they are still processing them! Don't give up hope.

anybody try going to the actual IRS office in person? I'm considering it at this point

Tried it. They're appointment only and appointments are booked 3+ months out. Waste of time.

claimyr.com worked better for me than trying to go in person. Got me to a live agent who could actually help.
