Need IRS phone number for my ny unemployment tax refund - been waiting 5 months

I filed my taxes back in March and was told I would get a refund for the unemployment taxes I paid last year. It's now August and still nothing from the IRS. My tax guy says they're backed up but this is ridiculous. The "Where's My Refund" tool just says it's still processing. I've tried calling the general IRS number like 20 times but can never get through to a human - just that stupid automated system that eventually hangs up on me. Does anyone have a direct number for the unemployment tax refund department or some secret extension that actually works? I'm owed about $950 and really need that money right now since my hours got cut back at work.

The IRS is a mess right now. I filed in February and only got my refund last week. I had to call them like 47 times before someone picked up. Try 800-829-1040 and when the automated system asks for your reason, press 2 then 1 then 3 then 2. It'll ask for your SSN but DON'T enter it, just wait. Then press 2 then 4 and eventually you might get a human. Good luck 🍀

Thanks I'll try that tomorrow morning. Did you have to wait a long time once you got through those options?

Yeah about 45 minutes on hold listening to the most annoying music ever 😩 Call first thing when they open for better chances

Those button combos never work for me. It's like playing a video game where the boss keeps changing the pattern lol

I was in the same boat trying to reach IRS about my unemployment taxes. Wasted HOURS on hold. Then I found this service called claimyr.com that got me a callback with an actual IRS agent. Talking to the agent got my $ unlocked so fast - they found my refund was flagged for manual review because of the unemployment tax adjustment. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% worked for me. They just call for you and stay on hold, then connect you when a human picks up. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music torture

i've seen so many 'solutions' for reaching govt agencies that are complete BS. what makes this different?

The difference is it actually works lol. They don't claim to get you special treatment or anything - they just handle the awful hold time for you. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for weeks

wait so they just call and wait on hold for you? thats actually kinda genius ngl

Exactly! They call and navigate all the phone tree BS, wait on hold, then when a human finally answers they call your phone and connect you. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent

I had same issue! Took 6 months to get my refund. I had to contact my congressional representative - they have special liaisons with IRS. Call your congressperson's office and ask to speak with their taxpayer advocate. They helped me get my $1100 refund in just 3 weeks after I'd been waiting forever

Whoa I didn't know they could do that. Do I just look up who my rep is and call their office?

Yep! Google your zip code + congressional representative. Their websites usually have a "Help with Federal Agency" form somewhere. That's your ticket!!

The IRS has a special Taxpayer Advocate Service for situations like this. They're separate from regular IRS and can cut through the redtape when your case has been delayed. Call 877-777-4778 and tell them its causing financial hardship. they'll assign someone to your case

Bruh the IRS is so freaking behind this year its ridiculous. I waited 7 MONTHS for my unemployment tax refund. What worked for me was finding my local IRS office and making an in-person appointment. Check irs.gov/help/contact-my-local-office-in-person and try to get a slot. Theyre booked weeks out but its worth it

this is the way. local offices actually help. the main phone lines are a blackhole where dreams go to die 💀

look into getting a Taxpayer Advocate assigned to ur case. google TAS IRS. they only help if you can prove financial hardship tho, like if ur facing eviction or cant afford medicine.you'll have to fill out Form 911 (not joking, that's really what its called

The fact that it's called Form 911 tells you everything you need to know about the tax system 🤣

Here's what you really need to know about the IRS and unemployment tax refunds: First, the IRS is MASSIVELY backlogged right now with these unemployment tax refunds. They're processing them in batches based on complexity. If you filed early (before the American Rescue Plan made that unemployment partially tax-free), they have to manually review your return, which is taking forever. Your options are: 1. Call early morning (7am ET) at 800-829-0582 ext 633 - this sometimes works better than the main line 2. Use a service like claimyr.com which will handle the hold time and call you when an agent is on the line (this saved me literally days of trying) 3. Contact your Congressional rep's office as they have dedicated IRS liaisons 4. Request a Taxpayer Advocate if you're experiencing serious financial hardship Don't waste time with the "Where's My Refund" tool - it doesn't track these special unemployment adjustments properly. And don't bother filing amended returns for this - the IRS is doing it automatically and an amendment will just delay things further. Hang in there - the money will come eventually. Mine took 4 months but I finally got it.

Thank you for such detailed info!! I'll definitely try calling that extension tomorrow morning. And if that fails I might try that Claimyr thing

THEY R DOING THEM BY COMPLEXITY! if u have a simple return (single, standard deduction) u should have gotten it already. if u have a complex return (married, kids, multiple states, business income) ur at the back of the line. so frustrating!

This explains why I'm still waiting! I have income from 2 states plus some 1099 work. ughhhhh

Yes! This happened to me. When I finally talked to someone, they said they'd applied part of it to an old tax debt I didn't even know I had from 2018. Check if that happened to you too

has anyone tried the IRS Taxpayer Advocate line they advertise on the ny unemployment website? i can't tell if thats just for regular unemployment issues or if they help with the tax stuff too

whatever you do, DON'T file an amended return for this! the IRS specifically said not to do that for the unemployment tax exclusion. it will just mess things up more and push you to the back of line

^ THIS!!! My brother didn't listen and filed amended return anyway and now he's been waiting 9 months with no end in sight 🤦‍♀️

tip from a former IRS employee: call the regular number but speak spanish when prompted. the spanish line has way shorter wait times and most agents speak english too. they'll just transfer you if needed
