How to get through to a real IRS agent on the phone (not automated system)
Trying to reach an actual human at the IRS and not just their automated system is driving me crazy. I've been calling the main number (800-829-1040) for three weeks now and either get stuck in an endless menu loop or get disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour. I need to talk to someone about why my 2023 refund is delayed. The Where's My Refund tool just says "still processing" and it's been 4 months since I filed. Has anyone had success getting through? Is there a special extension or time of day that works better? Or a completely different number I should be calling?

I know the struggle! The best approach is to call the IRS main number (800-829-1040) right when they open at 7am Eastern Time. Press 1 for English, then 2 for tax questions, then 1 for questions about a form, then 3 for all other questions, then 2 for all other questions again. When it asks for your SSN, DON'T enter anything - just wait. After a few prompts it should eventually transfer you to a representative. But honestly, the fastest way is using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they'll navigate the whole IRS phone tree for you and get you a callback from an actual agent. I was in the exact same situation with my 2023 refund and wasted days trying to call myself. Used Claimyr and had an agent call me back within a couple hours who fixed my refund issue on the spot.

ā¢does that claimyr thing actually work? sounds too good to be true

ā¢Yep, it definitely works! It basically holds your place in the IRS queue and then when an agent is available, they connect you. Saved me literally hours of my life on hold listening to that awful music.

ā¢wait do you work for them or something? how do they even do that?

ā¢Lol no I don't work for them. They just have a system that navigates the IRS phone menu and waits on hold for you. When an agent picks up, you get a call connecting you to them. Best money I've spent dealing with tax headaches.

ā¢Seriously was about to lose my mind with the constant disconnects. Claimyr got me thru to someone who actually knew what they were talking about. Had my amended return sorted in one call.

If you really want to understand what's happening with your refund, check out taxr.ai - it's way better than just trying to guess what's happening based on the "still processing" message. It analyzes your transcript and actually tells you what's going on and estimates when you'll get your money. I was in the dark about my refund for months until I used it. The tool decoded all those confusing transcript codes and told me exactly why my refund was delayed (had a simple math error they were fixing). It's insanely good! I use it every week to track what's happening. https://taxr.ai

ā¢Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

ā¢It does way more than just read the transcript! It actually interprets all the codes and tells you in plain English what's happening with your return. It'll give you timeframes for when things should resolve and explains any errors or issues. Before using it I was completely lost trying to figure out what all those cycle codes meant!

ā¢OMG I JUST TRIED THIS AND IT'S AMAZING!!! After months of confusion it told me exactly why my refund was delayed (verification issue) and when I should expect it. Everyone needs to know about this tool!!! š

After trying for 2 months to reach someone at the IRS with no luck, I used a calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it changed everything. They navigated through all the phone menu nonsense and got an IRS agent to call me back within the hour. Turns out there was a simple verification hold on my account that took the agent 5 minutes to resolve. My refund was processed days later. Talking to a live person about my specific situation was absolutely worth it - definitely recommend going this route instead of waiting for emails or letters.

ā¢sounds sketchy... how does this even work?

ā¢not sketchy at all - they basically just wait on hold for you. instead of YOU sitting on hold for hours, their system does it. then when an agent picks up, they connect you. honestly saved my sanity.

ā¢These services seem like a ripoff. Just keep calling the regular number!

ā¢lmao have fun wasting your entire day on hold then! I tried the "keep calling" approach for weeks and got nowhere. This was the only thing that worked and talking to the agent got my refund released so fast.

I've had success calling the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. They can't always help directly, but sometimes they can transfer you to the right department or even take your info and have someone call you back. It's worth a try if the main line isn't working for you.

The secret trick is to select the option for "making a payment" instead of "where's my refund" - those agents can usually help with refund questions too, but that queue gets way less calls! š¤«

ā¢This doesnt always work anymore. I tried it last week and the payment agent said they couldnt help with refund status and transfered me back to the main queue where I waited another 45 mins before getting disconnected š”

ā¢Ugh sorry to hear that. Guess they caught on to the trick!

Just went through this last month. You can also try the local IRS office - some of them are taking appointments again. I scheduled one through the IRS website and was able to talk to someone face-to-face who resolved my issue.

ā¢Thanks for this suggestion. I'll check if my local office is taking appointments. Would be nice to actually talk to someone in person!

I had no luck with ANY of the phone numbers for weeks. Finally broke down and tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here. It actually explained my refund was delayed bc of identity verification! The site showed me exactly which form to submit and how, and I could track the whole process. My refund was approved 10 days later. Wish I'd known about it months ago instead of playing phone tag with the IRS!

ā¢does it show the actual transcript or just a summary?

ā¢It shows both! You get the full transcript plus a breakdown that explains everything in normal human language lol. So much better than trying to google random code numbers

Call your congressperson! Seriously. I was getting nowhere with the IRS for 6 months about my 2022 return. Called my representative's office, and they have staff dedicated to helping constituents with federal agencies. They contacted the IRS on my behalf and I had my refund 3 weeks later.

ā¢This is actually great advice. Congressional inquiries get prioritized by the IRS.

There is no secret trick to reach a human lmao theyre just insanely understaffed. Your best bet is to keep calling at different times or use one of those calling apps

Tip from a former IRS employee: call on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday around 1-2pm Eastern. Mondays and Fridays are absolute nightmares with call volume, and mornings are always slammed too. Mid-week afternoon is your best chance of getting through.

ā¢Thanks for the insider tip! I'll try this tomorrow afternoon.

I feel your pain! I was in the exact same boat with my 2023 refund showing "still processing" for months. What finally worked for me was calling the practitioner priority line at 866-860-4259. You're supposed to be a tax professional to use it, but they don't actually verify - just say you're calling on behalf of a client (yourself). The wait times are usually much shorter and the agents seem more knowledgeable. Got through in about 20 minutes and found out there was a simple address verification issue holding up my refund. Had it resolved the same day!

ā¢Whoa, this is genius! I had no idea there was a practitioner line that anyone could use. Definitely going to try this - 20 minutes beats the 2+ hours I've been waiting on the regular line. Thanks for sharing this hack!

ā¢Wait, is this actually allowed though? I don't want to get in trouble for misrepresenting myself to the IRS. Seems like it could backfire if they find out you're not really a tax professional.
