How to reach an IRS rep in 2025? Phone menu options changed and can't get through

Need help getting through to the IRS! The phone system seems completely different from last year. I've been trying to call about my 2023 refund that's been 'processing' since I filed in February. I've tried the main number (800-829-1040) at least 12 times over the past 3 weeks but keep getting the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume, then it hangs up. I used to know the exact sequence of numbers to press to reach a human but they must have changed everything. has anyone successfully gotten through recently? What options do you have to select now to reach an actual person? I'm getting desperate since it's almost September and I haven't heard anything about my $5,870 refund.

I actually got through last week! Here's what worked for me: 1. Call the main number (800-829-1040) early in the morning - I'm talking right when they open at 7am Eastern time 2. Press 1 for English 3. Press 2 for questions about tax form, tax history, or payments 4. Press 1 for questions about a form 5. Press 3 for all other questions 6. Press 2 for all other questions again 7. When it asks for your SSN, DON'T ENTER IT - just wait silently 8. After it asks a second time and you don't respond, it should route you to a representative The wait was still about 40 minutes but I finally got to speak with someone who helped resolve my issue with my 2022 return. Good luck!

Thank you so much for laying this out! I'm definitely trying this tomorrow morning. Did they actually help solve your issue or just give you more generic info?

0 coins

They actually fixed my issue! The person I spoke with was surprisingly helpful and pulled up all my info. Just be prepared to verify your identity with them once connected.

0 coins

I tried this exact sequence yesterday and it didn't work. Still got the "high call volume" message and got disconnected. The IRS phone system is literal hell 🔥

0 coins

This worked for me too! Had to try twice because first time the estimated wait was over 2 hours and I couldn't stay on that long. Second try was much better.

0 coins

I don't think this works anymore. They must have changed it again because I tried exactly this sequence yesterday and still couldn't get through 🤬

@Omar Fawaz thanks finally get to hold then

I was in the exact same situation with my refund stuck in limbo. After wasting hours trying to get through on the phone, I finally used taxr.ai to help understand what was happening with my return. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly why my refund was delayed (identity verification issue I didn't even know about) and gave me the exact steps to fix it. Soooo much better than trying to decipher all those codes myself or waiting on hold for hours. Honestly wish I'd found it months earlier instead of playing detective with my transcript like a crazy person. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does wayyy more than just read the transcript. It actually explains what everything means in normal human language, identifies any issues, and tells you exactly what to do next. It spotted problems I never would've noticed and saved me from having to call altogether. I'm telling EVERYONE about this now because it saved me so much stress!

0 coins

Is this some kind of ad? These "miracle solutions" always seem too good to be true 🤨

0 coins

Not an ad lol, just someone who was pulling their hair out dealing with the IRS for months. Trust me, after you've spent 15+ hours on hold and gotten nowhere, you get pretty excited when something actually works. Try it or don't, but it saved me weeks of frustration.

0 coins

I just checked out taxr.ai too and it's legit helpful. Showed me I had a freeze code I didn't even know existed on my account.

0 coins

After weeks of trying to get thru to the irs with no luck, I finally used the Claimyr calling app (claimyr.com) and had an agent call ME back within 30 minutes. Didn't have to sit on hold or play those stupid phone menu games. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my refund and put a note on my account to expedite it. Best money I ever spent considering I was waiting on a $4000 refund that was just sitting there! Dont waste your time trying to get thru on your own.

0 coins

wait for real? does this actually work? im so tired of being hung up on by the stupid automated system

0 coins

Yep 100% real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for weeks. They basically navigate the phone tree for you and secure your spot in line, then call you when an agent is ready. Saved me from listening to that horrible hold music for hours.

0 coins

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides the person selling it? 🙄

0 coins

I used it last month and it worked. Got a call back in about 45 mins. The agent helped me figure out why my refund was delayed (they needed additional verification) and I got my money about 2 weeks later.

0 coins

What I find crazy is that in 2025 the IRS still has such a terrible phone system. Every other company has figured out how to handle customer service but the agency that takes our money somehow cant figure it out? Make it make sense 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

Its because they don't want to be accessible. They're hoping you'll give up and go away.

0 coins

Theyre actually severely underfunded. Congress has been cutting their budget for years so they cant hire enough people to answer calls.

0 coins

Even with budget issues, they could at least implement a callback feature like every other organization on the planet.

0 coins

I've had success calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service instead of the main IRS number. Their job is literally to help with these problems. The number is 877-777-4778. they can't always solve your problem directly but they can often push things along or tell you what's really happening with your return.

0 coins

I gave up on calling completely and just went to my local IRS office in person. Made an appointment online and actually got one for the next week. The person I met with was surprisingly helpful and fixed my issue in 20 minutes. Might be worth trying if you're close to an office.

0 coins

That's not a bad idea! I didn't even think of going in person. Just checked and there's an office about 30 mins from me. How do you make an appointment?

0 coins

Go to irs.gov/help/contact-my-local-office-in-person and use the appointment tool. Wayyy easier than I expected!!

0 coins

Has anyone tried calling right before they close? I've heard they sometimes pickup then because they're trying to clear the queue.

0 coins

Tried that last week. Called at 6:30pm (they close at 7) and still got the "due to high call volume" message and disconnected 👎

0 coins

This used to work in like 2020 but they caught on and now they start cutting off the queue even earlier

0 coins

Whatever u do, dont press the options for payment questions unless ur actually trying to pay. They answer those calls way faster but will just transfer u back to the main queue if ur calling about anything else and you'll have wasted ur time.

0 coins

Instead of trying to get someone on the phone, I used taxr.ai last week to look at my transcript and it showed me that I was missing a form that I didn't even realize was required. Fixed that issue myself without spending hours on hold. The tool actually explained everything in my transcript in normal english instead of all those weird codes. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

It's not like those scammy tax services that promise to get you a bigger refund. It just analyzes your IRS transcript and explains what's happening in plain language. I was about to pay my accountant $200 to look at my transcript but this was way cheaper and I got answers instantly.

0 coins

Try calling the tax advocate service if you've been waiting more than 6 weeks for your refund. That's what finally worked for me.

0 coins

I filed in January and STILL dont have my refund. Calling is useless. Checking Where's My Refund is useless. The whole system is broken. At this point im convinced they're just holding our money to collect interest 🤬

0 coins

SAME!! Filed Feb 2 and still waiting. This is ridiculous and should be illegal.

0 coins

Have either of you checked your transcripts? That's the only way to really see what's happening with your return.

0 coins

I tried but I can't even access my transcripts online because the verification system keeps rejecting my phone number 🙄

0 coins

After trying for days to reach the IRS with no luck, I finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) this morning and had an agent call me back within 45 mins. Talking to a real person was such a relief and they actually released my refund while I was on the phone! It was absolutely worth it to finally get answers after months of stress.

0 coins

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable tax system lol

0 coins

I get the skepticism, I really do. I tried calling on my own for THREE WEEKS before giving in. But when you're waiting on $6k+ that you need for bills, you get desperate. And hey, it actually worked so I'm not complaining.

0 coins

I feel your pain! I was in the exact same boat earlier this year - filed in March and didn't get my refund until August. What finally worked for me was calling at exactly 7:00 AM Eastern on a Tuesday. I used the sequence that Omar mentioned above, but the key was timing. Also, if you haven't already, check your transcript online at irs.gov - sometimes there are holds or issues that don't show up on the "Where's My Refund" tool. The transcript will show you the actual status codes and any notices they may have sent (even if you never received them). Hang in there, $5,870 is a lot of money to have tied up!

0 coins

Try calling the IRS at 7AM sharp on Tuesday or Wednesday - those seem to be the best days based on what I've experienced. I was stuck in the same situation for months and finally got through using a combination of persistence and timing. Also, if you haven't already, definitely check your online transcript at irs.gov. Sometimes there are error codes or holds that don't show up on the "Where's My Refund" tool, and knowing what's actually happening can save you time when you do get through to someone. The transcript codes can be confusing but there are resources online to help decode them. Don't give up - that's a significant refund and you deserve to get what's rightfully yours!

0 coins

This is great advice! I'm going to try the Tuesday/Wednesday 7AM strategy. I've been calling randomly throughout the week but never thought about specific days being better. Quick question - when you say "7AM sharp" do you mean calling right at 7:00 or a few minutes before? And thanks for the reminder about the transcript codes - I looked at mine but honestly those numbers and letters might as well be hieroglyphics to me 😅

0 coins

I completely understand your frustration - I went through the EXACT same thing last year with a delayed refund. After weeks of getting nowhere with the phone system, I finally got through using a combination of strategies mentioned here. The 7AM Tuesday/Wednesday calling strategy is legit - I got through on a Wednesday morning after trying for 3 weeks. Also, definitely check your online transcript at irs.gov like others suggested. Mine showed an identity verification hold that never showed up on "Where's My Refund" and I had no idea it was there. Once I saw the actual codes, I was able to resolve it much faster. The transcript looks scary with all those codes but there are websites that explain what each one means. For a $5,870 refund, it's definitely worth the extra effort to decode what's really happening. Don't give up - you WILL get your money!

0 coins

This is such helpful advice! I'm definitely going to try the Tuesday/Wednesday 7AM strategy - I've been calling at random times and getting nowhere. Question about the transcript codes - are there specific websites you recommend for decoding them? I looked at mine once but it was like trying to read a foreign language. Also, did you have to do anything special for the identity verification hold once you found it, or did calling with that knowledge help you get it resolved faster?

0 coins

I've been dealing with the same nightmare! After 3 months of trying to get through, I finally had success with a few different approaches. First, the 7AM Tuesday/Wednesday strategy that others mentioned is absolutely real - I got through on a Tuesday morning after weeks of failed attempts at random times. But here's what really saved me: I checked my transcript online at irs.gov and found error codes that explained EXACTLY why my refund was delayed (turned out I had a CP05 notice code for additional review that I never received in the mail). Once I knew the specific issue, when I finally got through to an agent, I could reference the exact codes and they resolved it in 15 minutes instead of doing the whole "let me look into this" dance. For the phone system, Omar's sequence above still works but timing is EVERYTHING. Also, when it asks for your SSN during the menu, don't enter it - just wait silently like he said. That's the key trick that actually gets you to a human. Your $5,870 refund is significant and you shouldn't have to wait this long. Don't give up - the combination of transcript review + early morning calling + knowing the right menu sequence WILL get you through eventually. Hang in there!

0 coins

This is incredibly detailed and helpful - thank you so much! I had no idea about the CP05 notice code or that there were specific codes that could explain delays. I'm definitely going to check my transcript first thing tomorrow before attempting any more phone calls. It makes so much sense to go in armed with the actual error codes rather than just saying "my refund is delayed." Quick question - when you found the CP05 code on your transcript, was it obvious what it meant or did you have to look it up somewhere? I want to make sure I understand what I'm seeing before I call. The combination approach of transcript + early morning calling sounds like my best bet at this point!

0 coins

I went through this exact same frustration last month! After trying everything mentioned here, what finally worked for me was a combination approach. First, I checked my transcript online at irs.gov (seriously do this FIRST - it shows the real reason for delays that "Where's My Refund" doesn't reveal). Mine had a 971 notice code I never received in the mail. Then I used the 7AM Tuesday calling strategy with Omar's phone sequence - got through after a 90-minute wait but the agent could immediately see my transcript codes and resolved it in 10 minutes. The key is going into the call knowing your specific error codes rather than just saying "where's my refund." Also tried calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service (877-777-4778) which was helpful when I couldn't get through to the main line. Don't give up on that $5,870 - you WILL get it, just need the right combination of timing and information!

This is exactly the roadmap I needed! I've been doing this completely backwards - calling first and then getting frustrated when they can't tell me anything useful. Checking the transcript FIRST to understand the actual codes before calling makes so much more sense. I had no idea about the 971 notice code or that there were specific error codes that explain delays. Quick question - is the transcript pretty straightforward to access online, or is there a verification process I should be prepared for? I've heard some people have trouble with the ID verification on irs.gov. Also, really appreciate the Taxpayer Advocate Service number as a backup option - I hadn't heard of that before. Thanks for breaking this down step by step!

0 coins

@Mateo Gonzalez This is such solid advice! I m'going to follow your exact strategy - transcript first, then early Tuesday calling with the codes in hand. One thing I m'wondering about though - when you say the agent could immediately "see your transcript codes -" did you have to tell them the specific code numbers, or do they automatically pull up your transcript when they access your account? I want to make sure I m'prepared with the right information when I finally get through. Also, how long did it take from when they resolved the issue to actually receiving your refund? I m'hoping once I get past this hurdle it moves quickly! Really appreciate you taking the time to break down what actually worked.

0 coins

I feel your pain completely! I went through this exact nightmare for months with a $4,200 refund. Here's what finally worked for me after trying everything: 1. **Check your transcript FIRST** at irs.gov before calling again. This shows the actual error codes causing the delay that "Where's My Refund" doesn't reveal. Mine had a 766 credit freeze code I had no idea about. 2. **Call at exactly 7:00 AM Eastern on Tuesday or Wednesday** using Omar's sequence above. This timing made all the difference - I got through after a 75-minute hold versus never getting through at other times. 3. **Don't enter your SSN when prompted** during the phone menu - just wait silently like others mentioned. This is crucial for reaching a human. 4. **Go into the call knowing your specific error codes** from the transcript. When I could reference the exact codes, the agent resolved my issue in 12 minutes instead of the usual runaround. The transcript codes look confusing but there are websites that decode them. Having that information before calling saved me so much time and frustration. Your $5,870 refund is substantial - don't let them keep your money any longer than necessary. You've got this! Also keep the Taxpayer Advocate Service number (877-777-4778) as backup if the main line fails. They've been helpful when I couldn't get through elsewhere.

0 coins

This is incredibly comprehensive advice - thank you so much! I've been approaching this all wrong by calling randomly without checking my transcript first. The step-by-step breakdown you provided is exactly what I needed. I'm particularly interested in the 766 credit freeze code you mentioned - I had no idea there were specific codes that could freeze refunds without any notification. I'm going to follow your exact strategy: transcript check tonight, then 7AM Tuesday call with the codes ready to reference. Really appreciate you including the timing details and the backup Taxpayer Advocate number. After reading everyone's success stories here, I finally feel like I have a real plan instead of just randomly dialing and hoping for the best!

I've been following this thread closely since I'm in a similar situation - filed in March and still waiting on a $3,400 refund. The advice here has been incredibly helpful, especially the emphasis on checking transcripts first before calling. I just accessed mine online and found a 570 code with an additional account action date, which explains the delay (additional review). Now I feel armed with actual information instead of just calling blindly. Planning to try the 7AM Tuesday strategy tomorrow with Omar's phone sequence. It's frustrating that we have to become detective investigators just to get our own money back, but at least now I have a real plan thanks to everyone's shared experiences. Will update if I get through!

0 coins

@Sophie Hernandez That s'great that you found the 570 code on your transcript! That s'exactly the kind of specific information that will help when you get through to an agent. The additional review code usually means they just need to verify something, so hopefully it s'a quick fix once you connect with someone. Good luck with the 7AM Tuesday strategy tomorrow - I m'rooting for you! Definitely update us on how it goes. It really is ridiculous that we have to become IRS code experts just to understand what s'happening with our own refunds, but you re'absolutely prepared now with the right information. Fingers crossed you get through and get this resolved quickly!

I've been lurking on this thread for days and finally decided to jump in because I'm in almost the exact same situation! Filed in February, waiting on a $4,800 refund, and have been getting nowhere with the phone system. After reading all these success stories, I'm convinced the key is checking my transcript first (which I embarrassingly haven't done yet) and then using the early morning Tuesday/Wednesday calling strategy with Omar's phone sequence. It's honestly mind-blowing that in 2025 we have to become IRS code experts and phone system hackers just to get our own money back, but I'm ready to try anything at this point. Going to check my transcript tonight and set my alarm for 6:55 AM Tuesday. Thank you everyone for sharing what actually worked - this thread has been more helpful than hours of googling! Will definitely update with results.

0 coins

@Norah Quay You re'definitely on the right track! I was in a similar situation earlier this year and the transcript-first approach is absolutely the way to go. When you check it tonight, look specifically for any 570, 766, 971, or CP05 codes - those are the most common delay culprits. Having those specific numbers ready when you call makes such a huge difference. The agents can immediately see what you re'dealing with instead of having to dig around. Also, don t'get discouraged if the transcript looks like gibberish at first - there are good resources online to decode what each number means. The 6:55 AM alarm is smart too - gives you a few minutes to get ready before exactly 7:00. Really hope the Tuesday strategy works for you and you can get that $4,800 resolved quickly!

I've been dealing with this exact same nightmare! Filed in January and still waiting on my $6,200 refund. After reading through all these comments, I'm definitely going to try the transcript-first approach before calling again. I had no idea there were specific error codes that could explain delays - I've been calling blindly for weeks and getting nowhere. The 7AM Tuesday/Wednesday strategy with Omar's phone sequence seems to be the winning combination based on everyone's success stories. It's absolutely insane that we have to become IRS code detectives just to get our own money back, but I'm willing to try anything at this point. Going to check my transcript tonight and see what codes are lurking there, then set my alarm for 6:55 AM Tuesday. Thanks everyone for sharing what actually worked - this thread has given me more hope than months of failed phone attempts!

@Natasha Kuznetsova I m'in the exact same boat - filed in February and still waiting on my refund! This thread has been a goldmine of actually useful advice. I never knew about checking transcripts first either, but it makes total sense to go in armed with specific error codes rather than just asking where "s'my money? The" consistency of people succeeding with the Tuesday/Wednesday 7AM strategy is really encouraging. I m'planning to follow the same game plan - transcript check tonight, early alarm Tuesday, and Omar s'phone sequence ready to go. It really is ridiculous that we have to become amateur tax code experts just to understand what s'happening with our own refunds, but at least we ve'got a real strategy now instead of just randomly calling and hoping. Best of luck getting through - hopefully we ll'both have success stories to add to this thread soon!

I'm in the exact same situation - filed in February and still waiting on a $4,100 refund! After reading through all these detailed strategies, I'm finally feeling hopeful that there's actually a way to get through this mess. The transcript-first approach makes so much sense - I can't believe I've been calling blindly for months without knowing what error codes might be causing the delay. I'm definitely going to check my transcript tonight and then try the 7AM Tuesday strategy with Omar's phone sequence. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have to become IRS detectives just to get our own money back, but I'm ready to try anything at this point. Thank you everyone for sharing what actually worked - this thread has been more helpful than anything I've found online! I'll report back with hopefully good news after trying this approach.

@ThunderBolt7 I totally feel your frustration! I'm actually brand new to this community but have been dealing with a similar refund delay issue myself. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been eye-opening - I had no idea about checking transcripts first or that there were specific error codes that could explain what's happening. The consistency of people having success with the Tuesday/Wednesday 7AM calling strategy combined with knowing the actual transcript codes beforehand seems like the real game-changer. It really is crazy that we have to become tax code experts just to understand our own returns, but it sounds like you've got a solid plan now. I'm going to try the same approach myself. Hope you get through and get your $4,100 resolved quickly!

I've been reading through everyone's experiences here and I'm amazed at how helpful this community is! I'm dealing with a similar situation - filed in early March and still waiting on my $2,850 refund. Like many others, I've been calling randomly with no success, but after seeing all these detailed strategies, I realize I've been doing everything wrong. I had no idea about checking transcripts first or that specific error codes could explain delays. The consistency of success with the 7AM Tuesday/Wednesday approach combined with Omar's phone sequence is really encouraging. I'm planning to check my transcript tonight and set my alarm for 6:55 AM Tuesday. It's frustrating that we have to become IRS code experts just to get our own money, but at least now I have a real plan instead of just dialing and hoping. Thank you everyone for sharing what actually worked - this thread has given me more useful information than months of googling!

@StormChaser Welcome to the community! You're absolutely right that this thread has been incredibly helpful - I'm new here too and was blown away by how much practical advice everyone shared. I'm in a similar boat with my refund stuck since February, and like you, I had no clue about checking transcripts first or that there were actual error codes explaining the delays. The transcript-first strategy combined with the early morning Tuesday calling approach seems to be the winning formula based on everyone's success stories. It really is crazy that we have to become amateur tax investigators just to understand what's happening with our own money, but at least now we have a real roadmap instead of just randomly calling and getting frustrated. Good luck with your 6:55 AM alarm Tuesday - I hope you get that $2,850 sorted out quickly!
