Anyone single get their NY unemployment tax refund yet?
So I filed my taxes early March and got my regular tax refund about 2 weeks later. But I'm still waiting on this unemployment tax refund thing. I heard they started processing in June for single filers first. It's now August and nothing in my account. I made around $17,000 in unemployment last year. Anyone else who's single actually received their UI tax refund yet? How long did it take for you? Did they notify you before depositing it? I'm checking my bank account everyday and starting to worry I might be overlooked.

Filed in February, single, no dependents, got my tax refund in like 3 weeks but still waiting on the unemployment tax refund. Getting really frusterated with this whole process. Called the phone number and couldn't even get through to ask about it. Starting to think this is never coming.

Same boat! Been calling for WEEKS and can't get a human. It's ridiculous how impossible it is to reach anyone at ny unemployment.

Try using claimyr.com - I was able to actually get through to a real person within an hour. They called me when an agent was on the line. Worth every penny to finally get answers about my refund.

is that some kind of paid service or something? not trying to spend more money just to find out where my money is 🙄

Yeah it costs some $ but I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks. They got me through to someone who confirmed my refund was being processed. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast.

I finally got mine last week! Single filer, made about $15k on unemployment last year. It just showed up in my account with no warning. Was starting to think they forgot about me lol. The deposit just said "IRS TREAS 310 TAX REF" - got back about $1,400. Hang in there!

OMG thank you for giving me hope! I'll keep checking my account. Did you do anything special or just wait?

Literally just waited! I was checking my account like a psycho every morning 😂 Then it just appeared randomly on a Tuesday.

so is it a separate deposit from your normal tax refund? I already got my regular refund months ago

Yep completely separate deposit! Your regular refund is processed first, then they do this unemployment tax adjustment as a second payment.

I found an awesome service that helped me actually get through to unemployment to ask about this! After trying for days to get someone on the phone, I used claimyr.com and got a callback with an agent on the line within 45 mins. Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - the agent told me the unemployment tax refunds are coming in batches and mine was scheduled for next week. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent.

Wait so this actually lets you skip the phone queue? How does that even work?

Yeah it calls repeatedly for you and then connects you when it gets through. I was shocked when my phone rang and it was actually an unemployment agent! Best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly.

Did this yesterday and can confirm it works 💯 After being on hold for 2+ hours every day for a week, this got me through in 35 minutes.

Looking at the IRS website they're supposed to be processing the simple returns (single filers) first, then married couples after. They started in late May but said it could take all summer. I'm single and still waiting too. This whole unemployment tax thing is such a mess!

From what I understand, if you already filed your taxes and paid taxes on unemployment before the American Rescue Plan passed, the IRS is supposed to automatically recalculate and send you the refund. But if you filed after the law changed, it should have been included in your original refund. When did you file?

I filed March 8th, and the law passed March 11th I think? So I definitely filed before the change. My tax guy didn't know the law was gonna change.

Yeah you should definitely be getting an automatic adjustment then. They're just taking their sweet time with it 🐢

Here's what I know as someone who FINALLY got their unemployment tax refund last month: First, they're processing these in batches based on complexity. Single filers with no dependents and simple returns are first. But even within that group, they seem to be working through it randomly. Second, there's no notification - it just appears in your account. Mine showed up as "IRS TREAS 310" in my bank statement. Third, the IRS 'Where's My Refund' tool DOESN'T track these adjustments. You won't see it there. Fourth, if you want to check if your adjustment is processed, you can try to get your IRS transcript online. It will show if an adjustment has been scheduled. Fifth, if you absolutely need to know when it's coming, you'll have to talk to someone at the IRS or unemployment office. I spent DAYS trying to get through before I found claimyr.com - they kept calling until they got through, then connected me to an actual human. Best money I've spent all year considering it got me actual answers about my refund status. Hope this helps someone! The system is frustrating but hang in there!

It's a service that basically waits on hold with the unemployment office for you, then calls you when a real person picks up. Saves you from the whole 'press 1, then 4, then wait 3 hours' nightmare. They have a website claimyr.com

You can check ur tax transcript!?? HOW? I've been waiting forever and the IRS website is so confusing 😭

Go to IRS.gov, create an account if you don't have one, then request your 'Account Transcript' for 2020. Look for a line that says something like '971 Notice Issued' with a future date - that's when they processed your adjustment.

It's such bulllshit how they handle this. I'm single, claimed like 20k in unemployment, and I'm still waiting too. My friend in California got hers weeks ago. NY unemployment system is a joke.

The whole system is garbage. I've been waiting on my regular UI for 2 months with a 'pending' status. Can't reach anyone on the phone either.

I haven't gotten mine yet either but my brother did (we're both single, similar situations). Seems totally random how they're processing these. The whole NY unemployment system is a nightmare from start to finish.

Dude I KNOW. My roommate got her unemployment in 2 weeks, took me 2 MONTHS for the exact same situation. Make it make sense 🤡

Has anyone tried calling the IRS about this instead of unemployment? Wondering if that might be more helpful since it's a tax refund issue.

I tried. Spent 1.5 hours on hold only to be told they can't give specifics about when individual adjustments will process. Total waste of time.

I used claimyr.com to get through to both - IRS said it's coming but couldn't give a date, NY unemployment actually had more info and confirmed mine was processed last week.

Wait you're supposed to get a tax refund for unemployment??? I had no idea. I collected around $14k in UI benefits last year. How does this work? Do I need to file something?
0 coins
Zara Mirza
No you don't need to file anything if you already filed taxes. The American Rescue Plan made the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits tax-free for 2020. If you filed before that passed and paid taxes on all your UI, they're supposed to automatically refund the difference.

HOLY CRAP I had no idea! I definitely paid taxes on all of it. Guess I'm in the waiting game too now 🤞

So I work for a tax prep place (not giving details for obvious reasons) - from what we've seen, the IRS is WAY behind on these adjustments. They keep saying 'all summer' but honestly some might not come until fall. If you had other complications on your return (self-employment, multiple W2s, etc) you're further back in line even if you're single. It sucks but all you can do is wait.

Thanks for the insider perspective. I do have some self-employment income from freelancing... guess that pushes me back in line 😩

Do you know if they'll send a letter or something when they process it? Or it just appears?

They're supposed to send a letter about 2-3 weeks after they process the adjustment, but the money usually arrives before the letter does. And some people never get the letter at all. The IRS is... not great at communication lol

Got mine yesterday! Single filer with pretty simple taxes, about $13k in UI last year. Refund was $1,224. Hang in there everyone!

The most frustrating part is you cant even check on the status. I tried calling NY unemployment and they said it's an IRS issue. Called IRS and they said they can't give status on individual adjustments. It's like they designed this system to be as annoying as possible 🙄

I had the same experience but finally got someone helpful after using claimyr.com to get through. They connected me with an agent who actually looked up my file and confirmed it was in process.
