Anyone single received NY unemployment tax refund yet? Still waiting on mine
Has anyone who filed as single actually gotten their NY unemployment tax refund yet? I filed my 2024 taxes back in February and included all my unemployment income from last year. My tax preparer said I should be getting about $1,100 back because of the unemployment tax break, but I haven't seen anything hit my account yet. It's already mid-June! Everyone I know who's married filing jointly already got theirs weeks ago. Is it just taking longer for single filers? Getting worried something's wrong with my return.

I'm single and just got mine yesterday! It took almost 4 months from when I filed in late February. The direct deposit was separate from my regular tax refund, and they didn't send any notification, it just appeared in my account labeled 'NYS UNEMPLOYMENT TAX REFUND'. The amount was pretty close to what my tax guy estimated too. I think they're just processing them in batches and single filers might be in a later batch.

•That's a relief to hear! Did you do anything special to get it or just wait? I'm checking my account obsessively every morning.

I'm STILL waiting and I filed in January!!!! Single, claimed $8,900 in unemployment last year. Called TWICE to ask about it and both times got different answers. First person said "it's processing" and second person said they "don't have any information about unemployment tax refunds" which is COMPLETE BS!!!! The website says 8-12 weeks but it's been WAAAAAY longer than that now. Starting to think they're hoping we'll just forget about it.

Tax specialist here. The NY Department of Taxation and Finance is indeed processing these unemployment tax adjustment refunds in batches, with no publicly announced schedule. For 2024 returns, they're handling married filing jointly returns first, then head of household, and finally single filers. Some single filers are starting to receive them now, but many won't see theirs until July or even August. A few things to check if you're concerned: 1. Verify your direct deposit information was correct on your return 2. Check if you had any offsets (child support, state debts) that might reduce your refund amount 3. Make sure you properly reported your unemployment on Schedule 1 If it's been more than 16 weeks since filing, you can request a refund status check by calling the Tax Department's dedicated line at 518-457-5181.

•Thank you for this explanation! Is there any way to check online if my refund is at least in the system somewhere? The regular 'Where's my refund' tool only shows my original refund status.

•Unfortunately, the standard 'Where's My Refund' tool doesn't track these special unemployment tax adjustment refunds. They're processed through a different system. The phone line is really the only official way to check status if you're outside the expected timeframe. That said, from what I'm seeing, most single filers are just now starting to receive theirs, so being patient a bit longer is probably your best option unless you hit that 16-week mark.

I tried calling the NY tax department about this last week and spent TWO HOURS on hold before giving up. Has anyone actually managed to talk to a real person there? Is there a better number to call or a specific time of day that works?

•I was in the same boat - spent ages trying to get through to the tax department with no luck. Finally I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have this system that waits on hold for you and calls when an agent picks up. Their video demo shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with confirmed my unemployment tax refund was approved but in a later batch for processing. At least I got an answer instead of stressing about it.

•Thanks for the tip! Anything is better than sitting on hold for hours. I'll check it out.

•You didn't have to claim anything special! If you reported your unemployment income correctly on your tax return (it would be on the 1099-G form you received), the adjustment should happen automatically. The system identifies eligible returns and processes the refunds. Check if you included your 1099-G when you filed.

I finally got mine yesterday - single filer, filed in March. It was $1,240 which was actually more than I expected. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the order they're processing these in. My roommate filed the same week as me (also single) and still hasn't received hers. They're definitely behind schedule compared to what they initially announced.

•That gives me hope! Did yours come as direct deposit or a paper check?

•Direct deposit - same account as my regular refund. It showed up as "NYS TAX REFUND" in my transaction history.

•I'm in Albany and still waiting, but my coworker in Syracuse got hers last week. Both single filers. I doubt it's regional, probably just random batches.

Update for anyone still checking this thread - I called the tax department this morning (waited 45 minutes) and the representative told me they are STILL processing single filer unemployment tax refunds and will be through July. They're prioritizing earlier filers first, but there are apparently over 200,000 eligible returns to process just for singles. So hang in there!
