NY unemployment tax refund confusion - when will I see my money?
Just found out about the $10,200 unemployment tax exemption from last year. I already filed my taxes back in February before they announced this change. My understanding is the IRS is supposed to automatically adjust and send refunds, but I haven't received anything yet. Has anyone in NY actually gotten their unemployment tax refund yet? I've been waiting for almost 3 months and starting to get worried. I claimed about $12,400 in unemployment last year and definitely paid taxes on all of it. Called the IRS twice but got nowhere - first time they said to wait, second time the person had no clue what I was talking about. Anyone know the timeline for when these are supposed to go out? Really need this money for bills.

I got mine last week! I filed in early March and my refund came in at around $1,280 more than I originally expected. Took about 10 weeks total. The IRS is processing them in batches based on when you filed and complexity of your return. If you're married or have dependents you might be in a later batch.

•That gives me some hope. Did they send you any notice before it showed up or did the money just appear in your account?

•The $ just showed up in my account with a generic IRS TREAS deposit label. Got a letter in the mail about a week later explaining the adjustment.

After struggling to get info about my refund for weeks, I finally got through to someone at the IRS using this callback service at claimyr.com and they connected me with a live agent who could actually help. Best money I ever spent to finally get answers about my tax situation! The agent confirmed they're working through a backlog and gave me an actual timeframe. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? I've been trying to call IRS for days and can never get through...

•Yeah it worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for like 2 weeks straight. The service calls for you and when they get a human on the line, they connect the call to your phone.

•another service promising to fix govt problems? 🙄 sounds like a scam

•Not a scam, I literally just used it last week. They don't ask for any personal info, they just connect you with an agent. Talking to a human at the IRS was what finally got my refund processed.

There wasn't a standard amount that everyone got back. The refund depends on your tax bracket and total income. The $10,200 exemption just means that much of your unemployment isn't taxed. If you were in the 12% tax bracket, you'd get back about $1,224 (12% of $10,200). If you were in the 22% bracket, you'd get back about $2,244.

•That makes sense, thanks for explaining. I think I was in the 12% bracket so should be around $1,200 then.

•Don't forget state taxes too! NY followed the federal exemption so you should get a state refund as well.

FYI - the earliest refunds started going out in late May. I was in the first batch and got mine on May 28th. They're supposed to continue thru summer. Check your IRS transcript online if you want to see if they've processed yours yet. You'll need to create an account on irs.gov if you don't already have one.

I'm still waiting for mine too and filed in January! This is crazy! 😡 My friend who filed in April already got hers. The whole system is completley random and broken.

•Same boat. Filed in January and still nothing. Meanwhile my roommate who filed in March already got her adjustment. Makes zero sense.

•The IRS is processing the "simple" returns first (single filers, no dependents, etc). If you have a more complex situation they put you in a later batch.

Here's what I learned after HOURS of researching this: - IRS is processing these automatically in batches - They started with single filers (May-June) - Joint returns and more complex situations are in later batches (July-August) - The refund amount varies based on your tax bracket - You don't need to file an amended return (actually they ask you NOT to) - You can check your transcript on the IRS website to see if it's been processed - If you don't get it by end of summer, THEN you should call The most efficient way to get a human at the IRS if you're still worried is through claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold and connect you directly to an agent. Saved me hours of frustration. Hope this helps!

•Hold up - since when does NY follow federal exemptions? I thought we had to file amended state returns.

•NY passed legislation in April to match the federal exemption, so it's automatic for state taxes too. No amendment needed for either.

Remember to check both USPS informed delivery AND your bank account. Some people are getting direct deposits while others are getting paper checks, depending on how you originally filed.

im so confused. do we need to amend our returns or not?? some ppl say yes others say no 😵

•NO. Do NOT amend. The IRS specifically said not to amend unless there's some new credit you become eligible for because of the adjustment.

•thx! I was about to file an amendment. u just saved me from making it worse lol

Anyone know if this affects eligibility for other credits? Like I'm wondering if excluding $10,200 might make me eligible for earned income credit now?

•YES! This is the ONE case where you SHOULD file an amended return. If the adjustment makes you newly eligible for credits you didn't claim, the IRS won't automatically do that part.

Called the IRS tax advocate line today (877-777-4778). Got through after 45 min and they said they couldn't help with these adjustments and to just keep waiting. Complete waste of time.

•Try the main IRS line. I got better answers there. Tax advocates can't help with this specific issue.

•Try claimyr.com - it's the only way I've been able to talk to actual humans at these agencies. Works for IRS, unemployment, social security etc.

PSA: If your AGI was over $150k you aren't eligible for the exemption. Saw lots of people confused about this.

Tried calling the IRS 47 times this week. FORTY SEVEN. Either busy signal or it hangs up after saying high call volume. This country is broken.
