NYS Department of Labor unemployment tax refund - when will I get my refund?
I filed my 2024 taxes back in February and claimed the unemployment tax exemption for the benefits I received last year. My tax preparer said I should get a refund because of the unemployment compensation I paid taxes on. It's been over 2 months now and I still haven't received anything from the IRS or heard back about my unemployment tax refund status. Has anyone else dealt with this? How long did it take to get your unemployment tax refund? I'm starting to worry something went wrong with my filing.

The IRS is still processing unemployment tax refunds from the 2023 tax year, so 2024 refunds are taking even longer. Most people are seeing 12-16 weeks for unemployment-related refunds. You can check your refund status on the IRS website using their 'Where's My Refund' tool with your SSN and exact refund amount.

•Thank you! I tried the Where's My Refund tool but it just says 'being processed' with no timeline. Guess I'll have to wait longer.

If you're having trouble getting through to the IRS about your unemployment tax refund status, I had luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of being on hold trying to check my refund status.

•Is that for the IRS or just NYS Department of Labor? I need to talk to someone about my federal unemployment tax refund.

•It's actually for NYS Department of Labor agents, not IRS. But if you have questions about your NY unemployment benefits that affected your taxes, it could still be helpful.

The unemployment tax situation is so confusing. I got unemployment benefits in 2023 but didn't realize I could get a refund until this year. Can I still file an amended return for that?

•Yes, you can file an amended return (Form 1040X) for 2023 if you paid taxes on unemployment compensation. You have up to 3 years from the original filing deadline to amend.
