Where is my unemployment tax refund from NYS Department of Labor - still waiting after 8 months
I filed my 2024 taxes back in February and was supposed to get a refund for the unemployment taxes I overpaid. My tax preparer said the IRS would send it automatically but it's been 8 months and nothing. I got unemployment from NYS Department of Labor last year totaling about $18,400 and paid taxes on all of it before they changed the rules. Has anyone else still waiting for their unemployment tax refund? I really need this money and don't know who to contact - the IRS or NYS Department of Labor?

The unemployment tax refund comes from the IRS, not NYS Department of Labor. You can check your refund status on the IRS website using their 'Where's My Refund' tool. You'll need your SSN, filing status, and exact refund amount. If it's been this long, there might be an issue with your return that needs to be resolved.

If the IRS tool isn't showing information, your return might be stuck in processing. This happened to me last year - turns out they needed additional verification. Getting through to the IRS is nearly impossible with normal calling. This whole unemployment tax refund thing has been a disaster from the start. The government takes our money, then makes us jump through hoops to get it back. Eight months is ridiculous!!! They can process regular refunds in weeks but suddenly when it's THEIR mistake we have to wait forever.
