NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits - when will tax refund arrive?
I got unemployment benefits last year and paid taxes on them, but then I heard the IRS was supposed to give refunds for some of the unemployment tax. I filed my NYS Department of Labor weekly claims properly and everything was legit. Does anyone know when these unemployment tax refunds are actually going to show up? I keep checking my bank account but nothing yet. My neighbor said she got hers already but I'm still waiting.

The IRS unemployment tax refunds were mostly processed in 2021-2022 for the 2020 tax year when unemployment benefits had that $10,200 exemption. If you're talking about more recent unemployment from NYS Department of Labor, those benefits are still fully taxable unfortunately. You might want to check if you're thinking of a different type of refund?

•Wait so there's no more unemployment tax breaks? I thought since I got my benefits through the regular NYS Department of Labor system there might still be something...

You should double-check your 1099-G form from NYS Department of Labor to see exactly how much tax was withheld from your unemployment benefits. If you had taxes taken out but still owe more, that's normal. The automatic refund program ended after they processed the 2020 claims. For any current tax issues related to your unemployment benefits, you'll need to work directly with the IRS or a tax professional.

•Thanks, I'll look at my 1099-G again. I guess I was confused about which years qualified for the refunds.

ugh the whole unemployment tax situation is so confusing! I had similar issues when I was dealing with my NYS Department of Labor claim status and trying to figure out all the tax implications

If you're having trouble getting through to the IRS about unemployment-related tax questions, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they helped me connect with the right people when I couldn't get through the phone lines. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. It was really helpful when I was trying to sort out my unemployment benefit tax situation.

•Interesting, I didn't know there were services that could help with getting through to government agencies. Might be worth looking into if the IRS lines are still impossible to reach.
