NYS Department of Labor unemployment taxes paid in 2022 - will I get refund?
I got unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor last year and they took out federal taxes from my weekly payments. Now I'm doing my 2022 taxes and wondering if I'll get any of that money back as a refund? I made about $18,000 total in unemployment benefits and had around $2,200 taken out for taxes. My tax guy is saying I might get some back but I'm not sure how this works with unemployment income. Has anyone been through this before?

Yes, you can definitely get a refund if they withheld more than what you actually owe. Unemployment benefits are taxable income, but the amount of refund depends on your total income for the year and your filing status. Since you only made $18k, you're probably in a lower tax bracket and should get most of that $2,200 back.

•That's what I was hoping! I didn't have any other income in 2022 so unemployment was all I made. Thanks for explaining that.

I got unemployment from NYS Department of Labor in 2022 too and got back like $1,800 of the $2,000 they withheld. The standard deduction alone covers most of what you made so you should definitely get money back.

Just make sure you have your 1099-G form from NYS Department of Labor before filing. Sometimes there are delays getting those forms and you need the exact amounts they paid you and what was withheld for taxes.

•I think I got mine already but let me double check. Is that the form that shows all my unemployment payments for the year?

•Yes exactly. It should show total benefits paid and federal tax withheld. You can also download it from your my.ny.gov account if you can't find the paper copy.

Wait I'm confused... I thought unemployment wasn't taxable? I didn't have any taxes taken out of mine and now I'm worried I'm going to owe money when I file.

•Unemployment benefits are definitely taxable at the federal level. If you didn't have taxes withheld, you'll need to pay when you file. NYS Department of Labor gives you the option to have 10% withheld but it's not automatic.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to get your tax documents or have questions about your benefit amounts, I used claimyr.com last month to actually get through to someone. They have this system that calls for you and gets you connected to a real person. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•That's interesting, never heard of that service before. Did it actually work to get you through?

•Yeah it worked really well. I needed to verify some payment dates for my taxes and couldn't get through the normal way. They got me connected within like 20 minutes.
