The whole system is designed to make it as difficult as possible to actually get your money. They'll find any excuse to delay or deny your claim. Make sure you document EVERYTHING because they'll question every little detail. And don't even get me started on the job search requirements - it's like they want you to waste time applying for jobs you're not qualified for just to meet their arbitrary quotas.
just make sure you apply right away if it happens!! you can file online through my.ny.gov and it's pretty straightforward. don't wait around because there's a waiting period anyway
the whole unemployment measurement system is pretty outdated IMO, doesnt capture gig workers or people who gave up looking very well
Good point about gig workers. The survey has been updated to better capture non-traditional employment, but it's still not perfect. NYS Department of Labor also publishes alternative measures like U-6 which includes discouraged workers and those working part-time for economic reasons. For your research, you might want to look at both the standard U-3 rate and these broader measures.
The unemployment system is such a joke. They'll make you jump through hoops for months while you can't pay rent. But yeah definitely apply anyway because you never know.
I had a nightmare trying to reach anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my claim went into adjudication after being terminated. Spent weeks calling and either getting busy signals or being hung up on after waiting hours. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made all the difference in getting my case resolved quickly.

For education/training, you generally need prior approval from NYS Department of Labor to maintain eligibility. Don't just start a program without checking first. And remember, even if you're doing everything right, always respond immediately to any correspondence from NYS Department of Labor - ignoring letters or requests for information is the fastest way to get your benefits stopped.
