If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about your specific calculation, I used claimyr.com a few months ago when I had questions about my benefit amount. They got me connected to an actual agent who walked through my wage history with me. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than trying to call the regular number.
You should definitely consider getting a lawyer especially if there's money involved. My brother tried to do his appeal alone and lost even though he had a good case. Sometimes it's worth the cost to have someone who knows the system.
Check your my.ny.gov messages too sometimes they post the determination there before the letter arrives. Also make sure your address is current because if the letter gets returned your case could get delayed even more.
I was so confused about this too when I first started filing my weekly claims! The NYS Department of Labor website actually has good info about how unemployment insurance works. It really helped me understand that this isn't charity - it's a safety net we all contribute to. When I had trouble getting through to speak with someone about my claim status, I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me connect with an actual NYS Department of Labor agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made the whole process less stressful knowing I could actually talk to someone when I had questions.
The whole system is messed up anyway. Whether you call it welfare or insurance, we're all just trying to survive while the government makes it impossible to get through to anyone. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and they act like they're doing us favors instead of providing services we paid for.

omg this is so confusing, i just want to know if my benefits will get cut off early if unemployment drops too much in my area?? like if they decide the job market is 'good enough' does that mean no more weekly claims??

•Your regular 26 weeks of UI benefits won't be affected by unemployment rates dropping. You'll get those regardless. It's only the Extended Benefits (additional weeks beyond 26) that depend on unemployment rate triggers.

my brother in law works for the state labor department (not NYS tho) and he says they target around 4.5% because that means almost everyone who wants work can find it, but there's still enough job turnover to keep the economy flexible. dunno if NYS Department of Labor uses the same logic
