The NYS unemployment system is so confusing!! I've been trying to figure out the same thing and everyone gives different answers. Some people told me there are federal programs that pay more but I can't find any info about that on the my.ny.gov website.
Those federal programs ended in 2021. Right now it's just regular state unemployment insurance through NYS Department of Labor. The benefit formula is pretty straightforward - they look at your highest quarter of earnings in your base period and calculate from there. At $75k annually, the original poster should get a good benefit amount.
I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone when I needed to check on my claim status after getting laid off. Kept getting busy signals and getting hung up on. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier when I needed to verify my job separation details.
For your economics class, remember that frictional unemployment is actually considered positive because it indicates a dynamic labor market where people can move between jobs. It's different from structural unemployment (skills mismatch) or cyclical unemployment (due to economic downturns).
wait so if someone gets laid off vs quits that changes the unemployment type? im so confused about all these categories
The NYS Department of Labor really needs to bring back in-person filing. Not everyone has reliable internet access and the phone system is a nightmare. This whole online-only approach is leaving people behind when they need help most.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO DENY PEOPLE!! They make the rules so complicated on purpose. I know people who worked for YEARS and still got denied for ridiculous reasons. Don't give up though - you can appeal their decision.

File an appeal ASAP if you think the denial is wrong. You only have 30 days from the determination date. The appeal process lets you present additional evidence about your work history and earnings.

•Good point about the 30 day deadline. I'll start working on the appeal this week just in case.
