How to check if I'll get NY unemployment tax refund after filing my return?
I recently filed my taxes and got my regular tax return already, but I'm confused about the unemployment tax refund situation. How do I know if I'll be getting an additional refund for the unemployment benefits I received? I paid taxes on all my NY unemployment last year, but heard some people might get money back. Is there somewhere on the NYSDOL website to check this? Or will it just show up in my bank account? Anyone know what the timeline is for these refunds in 2025?

The NY unemployment tax refund is separate from your regular tax return. If you qualify, it'll be processed automatically - you don't have to do anything extra. You can check your IRS transcript online to see if they've scheduled a refund adjustment. Go to IRS.gov and create an account if you don't have one already, then look for any pending adjustments or refunds in your tax account transcript.

Thanks! I didn't know about checking the transcript. Do you know roughly how long after getting my regular refund I should expect to see the unemployment adjustment? And will they send a letter first or just deposit it?

I've been checking my account every day and nothing yet. My regular refund came last week. I'll keep an eye out though, thanks!

There's actually some specific criteria for who gets an unemployment tax refund. It depends on your total income, how much unemployment you received, and whether you've already had the exclusion applied when you filed. The IRS is processing these in batches based on filing status and complexity. Single filers with simple returns are being processed first, then married filers and more complex returns. The IRS has stated they'll continue sending these refunds throughout 2025, but they're not giving specific timelines for individual cases. Also, the NY state refund is separate from the federal refund, so you might get one but not the other depending on your situation.

That makes sense. I'm single with a pretty straightforward return, so hopefully I'll be in an earlier batch. I received about $9,200 in unemployment last year and definitely paid taxes on all of it. I'll just have to be patient I guess!

I had the same experience trying to reach NYSDOL about my benefits last month. After trying for days, I finally used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent in under 10 minutes. They connect you directly to an unemployment agent without the wait. Saved me so much frustration! They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Not sure if they work for IRS calls, but definitely worth checking for unemployment issues.

My cousin got her unemployment tax refund but it was way less than she expected. Like only $120 when she thought it would be around $400. Did anyone else get less than expected?

The refund amount varies based on your marginal tax rate and how much unemployment compensation you received. They also subtract any outstanding debts like back taxes, child support, or federal student loans before issuing the refund. That might explain why your cousin's refund was smaller than expected.

I'm so confused about all of this. Do we HAVE to file an amended return to get the refund? My tax guy said I don't need to do anything but now I'm worried I'll miss out if I don't. And what if I already paid taxes on my unemployment for the previous quarter payments? Do they refund those too or just what I paid with my return? This whole system is so complicated I feel like I need a law degree just to understand my own taxes😩

Your tax guy is right - you do NOT need to file an amended return for this. The IRS is automatically recalculating and issuing refunds based on the unemployment tax exemption. Filing an amended return for this specific issue could actually delay your refund. As for the quarterly payments, yes, they'll take those into account in the recalculation. The adjustment looks at your overall tax situation, not just what you paid with your final return. The only people who might need to file amended returns are those with certain tax credits that would be affected by the change in income, but even then, wait until you get your automatic refund first.

Yes, the IRS typically sends a letter about 30 days after making the adjustment to your account. The letter explains the changes they made to your return. If you haven't received it within that timeframe, you can contact the IRS or check your online account for details about the adjustment.

Update: I just checked my IRS transcript like someone suggested, and I do see an adjustment scheduled for next week! It's not a huge amount ($286) but definitely better than nothing. Thanks everyone for the help! For anyone else wondering, definitely check your transcript - it showed up there before anywhere else.

That's great news! Thanks for updating us. The transcript is definitely the best way to track these adjustments since they don't always send notifications in advance. Glad you were able to get some clarity on your situation.
