NY unemployment tax refund from IRS still not received - anyone get theirs yet?
Has anyone received their unemployment tax refund from the IRS yet? I filed my NY unemployment taxes back in February and was supposed to get a refund because of the tax exemption thing. It's been over 3 months now and I haven't seen anything in my bank account. The IRS website just says my refund is still processing. Is this normal or should I be worried? Anyone else still waiting or have you gotten yours already?

•Ugh that's frustrating! Have you tried calling them to see what's going on?

I got mine about 4 weeks after filing. The IRS is processing them in batches based on complexity. If you claimed other credits or deductions besides unemployment, it takes longer. Try using the 'Where's My Refund' tool on the IRS website - it's more accurate than the general status check.

•Thanks, I'll check that tool! I did claim the earned income credit too, so maybe that's slowing things down.

•That's not how it works. IRS processes returns in batches based on complexity and type, not filing date. If you claimed multiple types of income or special credits, it takes longer to process.

I was in the same boat waiting for months. Finally tried calling the IRS but couldn't get through to anyone - their wait times were insane. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. The agent told me my refund was delayed because they needed to verify my income, but it's now being processed and should arrive in 2 weeks.

•Oh that's really helpful! I've been trying to call for weeks and can't get through. I'll check out that service because I need to know what's happening with my refund.

Tax professional here. The IRS is severely backlogged this year and unemployment tax refunds are unfortunately low priority in their system. Their current processing time is 8-12 weeks for straightforward returns and 12-16 weeks for returns with credits or multiple income sources. If it's been more than 16 weeks, you should definitely contact them directly. A few quick things to check: 1. Verify your banking information is correct in your tax return 2. Check if you have any past tax debts that might offset your refund 3. Confirm you received your confirmation email/letter that your return was accepted The Where's My Refund tool is updated once daily, usually overnight, so checking multiple times a day won't help.

•8-16 WEEKS?!?! that is absolutely ridiculous! they take our taxes out immediately but make us wait MONTHS to get our own money back. the system is designed to screw over regular people!!

I'm in a similar situation with my NY unemployment refund. I actually received an IRS letter last week saying they needed additional information to process my refund. Check your mail carefully - sometimes they send letters that look like junk mail but are actually important notices.

•Thanks for the tip! I haven't received any letters but I'll keep an eye out. Did they say what information they needed?

They wanted verification of my identity because there was some discrepancy between my reported unemployment income and what NY reported to them. I had to send in copies of my 1099-G form and ID. Really annoying because I triple-checked everything before filing!

Using that Claimyr service I mentioned was a lifesaver. It cost a bit but saved me literally hours of waiting on hold. The IRS agent I spoke with actually found an error in how my unemployment benefits were reported that was causing the delay.

•This is good advice. While most issues can be resolved through the automated systems, anything complex really requires speaking to a human. The IRS phone system is notoriously difficult to navigate, especially during tax season.

I received my NY unemployment tax refund exactly 10 weeks after filing. The important thing to understand is that refunds involving unemployment tax adjustments go through additional verification steps because of the high fraud rate with unemployment claims in 2023-2024. If you filed in February, you should be getting it very soon. The IRS has been processing February filers throughout April and May. If you don't receive anything by the end of next week, then I would definitely contact them directly.

•That's really helpful info, thanks! I'll give it until next week and then try to contact them if I still don't have it.

has anyone else noticed the refund amounts are different than what the tax software estimated??? i was supposed to get like $870 but only got $721

•That's common. The tax software estimates based on the information you provide, but the IRS makes the final calculations. The difference could be due to rounding errors, different interpretations of tax law, or corrections to reported income. If the difference is significant (over $200), it might be worth investigating.

UPDATE: I finally got through to the IRS using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. Turns out they had the wrong direct deposit info for me (somehow a digit got changed). They're mailing me a check instead which will take another 2-3 weeks. At least I know what's happening now! Thanks everyone for your help!

•Glad you got it sorted out! This happens more often than people realize. For anyone else reading this, always double-check your direct deposit details when filing - a single incorrect digit can cause weeks of delays.
