Anyone received NY unemployment tax refund yet for 2025? Still waiting on mine

Has anybody actually received their NY unemployment tax refund yet? I filed back in late January 2025 and my tax transcript shows the adjustment was supposed to be processed, but I still haven't seen a deposit. The IRS website just shows 'processing' status when I check. My neighbor said she got hers last week but I'm starting to get worried mine got lost somehow. Is there a way to check the status besides the regular 'Where's My Refund' tool?

I got mine about three weeks ago, but it took almost 2 months from when I filed. The regular 'Where's My Refund' tool won't show adjustment refunds - you need to check your tax transcript directly on the IRS website to see the code 291 with the adjustment amount. If it shows that code with a future date, that's when they plan to process it. Keep in mind NY state is processing these in batches, so some people get them earlier than others even if they filed around the same time.

Thanks for explaining! I checked my transcript and I do see a code 291 with a date of 4/15/2025 (which is next week). Does that mean I should see the deposit next week? I'm really counting on this money right now.

The 21-day timeline doesn't apply to adjustment refunds like these. Unfortunately the IRS is processing these separately from regular refunds. Did you check your tax transcript? That's the only reliable way to see if/when it's scheduled.

I was in the same boat and couldn't get a straight answer from the IRS website for WEEKS. I kept calling but could never get through to an actual person. Then a friend told me about Claimyr and it actually worked! Got connected to a real IRS agent in about 10 minutes when I'd been trying for days before that. The agent confirmed my refund was approved but stuck in processing and they were able to push it through. If you're desperate to talk to someone, try their service at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does that actually work for tax refunds? I thought Claimyr was just for reaching unemployment agents?

Sorry, my mistake! You're right - Claimyr is specifically for connecting with unemployment agents, not the IRS. I mixed up my experiences since I was dealing with both issues at the same time. For tax refund status, you'd need to keep trying the IRS phone lines directly.

Ugh, so there's no faster way to check on my refund? I've been trying to call NY unemployment too about some previous issues and can't get through there either.

For contacting unemployment, Claimyr definitely works! I used it last month when my benefits suddenly stopped and got through to NYSDOL in about 15 minutes instead of spending days calling. For your tax refund though, you'll need to keep trying the IRS lines directly or check if they have any special hours when call volume is lower.

I might try that for my unemployment issues then. For the tax refund, I guess I'll just have to wait until the scheduled date on my transcript. Thanks!

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!!!! I filed in JANUARY and still NOTHING while my brother filed in MARCH and already got his!!!! Makes ZERO sense how they decide who gets paid when. I called 23 TIMES yesterday and couldn't get through once. They do this ON PURPOSE to make people give up!!!

The frustration is real. I work as a tax preparer and can confirm they're processing these in batches that don't necessarily follow filing date order. Higher complexity returns tend to take longer regardless of when they were filed.

I was worried about the same thing, so I checked my tax transcript like others suggested. Found out my refund was scheduled for this week and it actually showed up yesterday! One thing that confused me - it wasn't labeled as an unemployment refund on my bank statement, just showed up as "IRS TREAS TAX REF" so maybe check if you already got it but didn't recognize it? Also the amount was slightly different than what I expected, about $42 less.

Good tip, I'll double check my bank statements. Did you get any kind of notice before it showed up or did it just appear in your account?

It just appeared in my account - no notice beforehand. I only knew it was coming because I checked my transcript and saw the date. The IRS is definitely not big on communication with these adjustments!

My sister got hers but I didn't get mine. We both filed the same week with the same tax guy. Makes no sense to me but whatever.

Even with identical filing dates and the same preparer, your returns might have different complexity factors or be assigned to different processing batches. The system isn't strictly first-come-first-served.

Tax professional here. If your transcript shows code 291 with a future date, that's your scheduled processing date. The refund typically hits accounts 5-7 business days after that date. If you see code 971 followed by 846, that means it's been approved and sent. For those still waiting, please note that unemployment tax refunds for tax year 2024 are being processed through August 2025, so some will wait longer than others. This is normal IRS procedure for adjustments.

This is really helpful, thank you! I just rechecked and I have codes 291 and 971 on 4/15, then code 846 on 4/22. So that means I should see it around April 22nd?

Exactly right. Code 846 with the 4/22 date means your refund is scheduled to be deposited on April 22nd. You're all set - no need to worry!

Thank you so much! That's a huge relief. I'll stop checking my account every hour now 😅
