Anyone know when IRS will release my refund? Stuck on 'still being processed' for 9 weeks
I e-filed my 2024 taxes around the middle of March. Got accepted right away, and when I checked the Where's My Refund tool a couple days later it said my return was received. But for the past 9 weeks it's just been saying "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available." No explanation, no errors, nothing. The amount was pretty significant - around $3,400 - since I had a kid last year and qualified for some extra credits. I've tried calling but can never get through to a real person. Checked my transcript online but don't understand all those codes. Anyone else stuck in this limbo? Any idea when I might actually see this money? Starting to get worried something's wrong.

If you claimed the Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit, the IRS legally can't issue your refund before mid-February. But since you're well past that timeframe, I'd suggest checking your transcript for specific codes. Look for code 570 (refund hold) or 971 (notice issued). If you see a 846 code with a date, that's your refund date. Without seeing your transcript, it's hard to say exactly what's happening, but 9 weeks is definitely approaching the point where you should be concerned. The IRS is still dealing with backlogs from previous years, but most straightforward returns aren't taking that long. You might need to call the IRS directly. The best time is early morning right when they open (7am Eastern). Try the taxpayer advocate service if you're experiencing financial hardship because of the delay. Also check if you received any letters from the IRS in the mail - sometimes they request additional information before releasing refunds.

•Thanks for the detailed response. I did claim EITC and CTC for my new baby. I see the 570 code on my transcript but no 846 yet. Guess I'll keep trying to call.

•I had the EXACT same situation last year. 570 code for like 2 months. Finally got my refund in late May after filing in February. Just hang tight, it'll come eventually 😐

•570 usually means they're reviewing something. Could be identity verification, income verification, or just random selection. Had this happen 2 years ago - took an extra 60 days but money showed up eventually.

I was literally in this exact situation last month! I was completely confused by my transcript and couldn't make sense of it. I finally tried taxr.ai and it was a complete game changer. It analyzed my transcript, explained exactly why my refund was delayed (something about a random review triggered by my CTC claim), and gave me a pretty accurate timeline of when to expect my money. Sure enough, refund showed up right when it predicted. Saved me so much stress and guesswork trying to decode all those IRS codes and dates! https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It's seriously amazing! You upload your transcript and it breaks everything down in plain English - explains all the codes, tells you exactly where you are in the process, flags any issues, and gives you a timeline. It even explains what each notice means if you got one from the IRS. Totally changed my tax experience this year!

•another app? does it need your personal info or ssn or anything? not tryna get scammed here

•No scam at all - it just analyzes what's already on your transcript that YOU upload. Saved me like 5 hours of googling random IRS codes and stressing out. Best tax tool I've found by far!

I was stuck in limbo for like 12 weeks this year. Eventually got desperate and used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual IRS agent on the phone within an hour. The agent told me my return was flagged for review because of my child tax credit claim (first time claiming it), but that everything looked fine and they'd release my refund. Got my money 8 days later. Worth every penny to finally get answers instead of checking WMR obsessively every day!

•wait does that actually work? i've been trying to call for weeks and just get the "due to high call volume" message 🤔

•100% worked for me! Instead of dealing with the annoying call system and getting hung up on, they basically wait in line for you and call when they get an agent. Finally got actual answers instead of guessing what was happening with my refund.

•sounds like a scam tbh. why would i pay to talk to the irs when its free?

•It's not a scam lol. You're paying to skip the hours of busy signals and automated hangups. I used it too and got my issue resolved in one call after weeks of getting nowhere.

•it's definitely not a scam. i was super skeptical too but i was at my wits end trying to get my refund. talking to an actual human at the IRS fixed my problem in minutes after weeks of stress. best decision i made!

I filed early feb and STILL waiting on my refund. The IRS is a joke. Their website says 21 days for most refunds but that's complete BS. welcome to the waiting club 🤡

Check your mail carefully! I was waiting forever and then realized they had sent me a letter requesting verification of my identity. The letter looked like junk mail so I almost threw it away. Once I verified, got my refund about 2 weeks later.

•I've been checking my mail every day and haven't received anything from them yet. How long after filing did you get your letter?

•It was about 3-4 weeks after I filed. Keep an eye out for something that looks like this: https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification-for-irs-letter-recipients

I waited 14 weeks last year, and finally found out that a digit in my routing number was wrong. The bank rejected the deposit, which led to a manual review. Check your direct deposit info to make sure its correct! The IRS won't tell you if there's an issue with that - they just delay the whole process.

•I double-checked my banking info and it's all correct. Used the same account for years without issues. 😩

The IRS is deliberately slow with refunds to make money off the interest. Change my mind.

•Facts 💯 They owe me $5k+ and have been sitting on it for months. If I owed THEM, they'd be charging me penalties and interest daily.

•Actually they do pay interest on delayed refunds. Check your transcript - if you see a code 776, that's interest they're adding to your refund. The longer they keep it, the more interest you get.

Debra Bai
•Yeah but their interest rate is way lower than inflation or what they charge us for late payments. The system is rigged.

Have you tried creating an account on the IRS website to view your transcript? Thats what i did and I could see that they were doing an income verification on my return. Seems like theyre really cracking down on tax credits this year, especially with all the pandemic relief stuff over the last few years.

•Yeah I made an account and looked at my transcript but all the codes just confused me. No idea what most of them mean.

•Look up the codes on google or check out the taxr.ai site someone else mentioned. thats what i ended up doing and it made everything crystal clear. otherwise your staring at a bunch of numbers that make no sense lol

I worked for the IRS as a seasonal tax examiner for 3 yrs. If your return has certain credits (EITC, ACTC) or if certain things trigger their automated system, it gets flagged for manual review. With a new dependent claim, that probably put you in the review pile. nothing to worry about if everything on your return is legit. but it can take 60-120 days for manual reviews. They're severely understaffed still.

•That's helpful context, thanks! Everything on my return is 100% accurate, so hopefully they'll process it soon.

•no problem! and yeah if its all good then itll process eventually. the system is designed to catch errors and fraud, but catches a lot of legitimate returns in the net too.

did u claim the recovery rebate credit? that caused a huge delay for my refund this year

•No I didn't claim that one. Just the regular child tax credit since I had a baby last year.

Call your local congressman/woman's office. Seriously. Their staff can submit an inquiry on your behalf that gets priority response. I was waiting 16 weeks, called my rep, had answers within 3 days and my refund a week later.

•This is actually great advice. My sister works for a congressman and says they do this all the time. The IRS has liaisons specifically for congressional inquiries.

•I second this! Called my representative when I hadn't heard anything for 12 weeks. They submitted an inquiry and I had my refund direct deposited 2 weeks later. Would have never thought of this on my own.

•tried everything. went thru identity verification twice. TAS says my case isn't 'urgent' enough for them to take. congressman's office has 'inquired' 3 times. irs just says 'still processing' every time. im basically accepting ill never see that money lmao

It's probably the child tax credit. They're really scrutinizing those this year after all the fraud during covid. My friend is a tax preparer and says the IRS is manually reviewing way more returns with child-related credits in 2025. hang in there!

I was about to post this same question! Filed Feb 25, accepted same day, and been stuck on "still processing" ever since. Starting to wonder if I'm ever gonna get my refund. Did you file yourself or use a preparer? I'm wondering if that makes a difference.

•I used TurboTax to file myself. Been using them for years with no issues before this.

Try calling the IRS early in the morning (like 7:01am ET) or right before they close. Be prepared to wait on hold, but it's your best shot at talking to someone. The 1040 line is always jammed, but if you can find a specialized number for your specific issue (like Wage & Income transcripts or Identity Verification), those lines sometimes have shorter wait times. Or use the Claimyr service mentioned in another comment - I've heard good things.

Just an FYI - the "Where's My Refund" tool is useless these days. It barely updates. Check your transcript instead and if you need help understanding it, use something like taxr.ai to decode it. Saved me so much stress trying to figure out what was happening with my refund this year.

Did you have unemployment in 2024? That's what held mine up. They had to verify my unemployment income because there were so many fraud cases during covid.

•Nope, no unemployment. Just regular W2 income and the new baby.

You need to stop checking it every day or you'll drive yourself crazy. I was in the same boat, checking 10x a day for weeks on end. Finally just forgot about it and then one day randomly got a deposit in my account. Try to forget about it - obsessing won't make it come any faster.

I'm going through the exact same thing! Filed in early March, got accepted immediately, but have been stuck on "still being processed" for about 8 weeks now. Also claimed the child tax credit for my first baby. It's so frustrating not knowing what's happening or when to expect the money. I've been checking the transcript but those codes are like reading hieroglyphics. Thanks for posting this - at least I know I'm not alone! Definitely going to try some of the suggestions people mentioned here, especially the early morning calling strategy and maybe checking out that transcript analyzer tool.

•So glad you posted this! I'm literally in the exact same boat - filed around the same time, new baby, child tax credit, the whole nine yards. It's such a relief to know this isn't just happening to me. I've been losing sleep over this thinking I messed something up on my return. Based on all the advice in this thread, I'm definitely going to try calling early morning and maybe check out that transcript analyzer tool everyone's talking about. Fingers crossed we both get our refunds soon! 🤞
