Filed return on 3/15, no updates on WMR - when should I expect movement?

I e-filed my tax return on March 15th and got an acceptance notification the same day. It's been over 7 weeks now and the Where's My Refund tool still shows "return received" status. No updates at all. I was expecting around $3,800 back and really need this money soon. Tried calling the IRS multiple times but can't get through to a human. Checked my transcript online but don't see any updates there either. Is this normal for this tax season? When should I start worrying? Anyone else stuck waiting like me?

Rosie Harper

Unfortunately this is normal for this tax season. The IRS is dealing with an enormous backlog. E-filed returns should typically be processed within 21 days, but many people are experiencing delays of 8-12 weeks or longer. Check your tax transcript instead of WMR for more detailed information - it usually updates before WMR does. Look for codes like 570 (refund hold), 971 (notice issued), or 846 (refund issued). Some potential reasons for delays: - ID verification needed - Manual review of credits claimed - Missing information on return - Fraud prevention measures If it's been more than 21 days, you can try calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040, but be prepared for very long wait times. The best hours to call are early morning or right before they close. Hang in there! Most returns eventually process without issue, just with frustrating delays.

Thanks for the detailed response! I've been trying to check my transcripts but the site keeps saying it's down for maintenance whenever I try to log in. Gonna keep trying though.

Do NOT waste your time on hold. I waited on hold for 3+ hrs multiple times, only to get disconnected. Absolute nightmare. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and had an IRS agent call ME back within an hour. They fixed my issue right then!

calling early morning is the best way to get thru without paying money. I usually call at 7:01am exactly when they open and get thru within 20 mins.

@profile 7 maybe that worked pre-pandemic but not anymore. I tried the early morning trick multiple times and still waited 2+ hours only to get disconnected. The callback service was worth every penny after wasting literal days trying to reach someone.

Instead of trying to play detective with your transcript and stressing over vague WMR messages, I'd recommend using taxr.ai. Completely changed my tax experience this year! I was in exactly your situation - filed mid-March, no movement for weeks, WMR stuck on processing. The tool analyzed my transcript, explained what was happening in plain English, and even predicted when I'd get my refund. Super accurate too - got my deposit the exact day it predicted! The best part is it takes all the guesswork out of interpreting those cryptic IRS codes. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It actually does a lot more than just read the transcript! It analyzes all your codes, dates, and amounts, then explains exactly what's happening with your return in normal human language. It caught an offset on mine that I didn't even know about and explained why my refund amount changed. Saved me hours of research and anxiety. Seriously game-changing for anyone dealing with tax confusion!

OMG THANK YOU for recommending this!!! Just tried it and in 2 minutes I understood more about my tax situation than after hours of googling. This deserves way more attention!! 🙌 Everyone dealing with the IRS needs this tool!

It doesn't ask for SSN or anything sensitive - you just upload your transcript which you download from the IRS site first. Super straightforward and it works amazingly well for making sense of all that IRS jargon.

After weeks of trying to get help with my tax return issue, I FINALLY got through to a live IRS agent using the Claimyr app (claimyr.com). They basically hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of hold time and the agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my return. My refund was released the next day! After 8 weeks of frustration, talking to an actual human at the IRS was the only thing that worked.

Is this actually worth it? Seems like just another way to make money off desperate people 🙄

I was skeptical too but after wasting an entire day on hold last month (got disconnected THREE times after waiting 1+ hours each time), I was desperate. The peace of mind from talking to an actual IRS person who could see my file and tell me exactly what was going on was 100% worth it. They had my refund released within 24hrs.

How long did it take to get the callback? I'm on week 9 of waiting and going insane.

I got my callback in about 45 minutes. Way better than the hours I spent trying to get through myself. The agent explained that my return had been flagged for manual review but everything looked fine and she released it right then.

I filed 3/5 and just got my refund yesterday. Took 8 weeks with zero updates on WMR until it suddenly changed to approved. My transcript updated a few days before WMR. The IRS is SLOW this year. Just keep waiting, it'll come eventually.

Anyone else notice how the IRS can take your money instantly but takes 2+ months to give it back? 🤔 The system is designed to be frustrating on purpose, change my mind.

Facts! They'll audit you in a heartbeat if you owe them but make you wait months when they owe you. System is rigged against regular ppl frfr 💯

They're sitting on our money earning interest while we wait. Its criminal if you ask me.

I work for a tax firm and can tell you it's not malicious, just bureaucracy and understaffing. The IRS is working with systems from the 1960s and hasn't been properly funded in decades.

Filed 2/28, got my refund last week. No updates on WMR until suddenly it showed approved then deposited within 2 days. Hang in there!

Have you checked your transcript? WMR is useless, transcript will show u the actual status with codes.

I've been trying to access my transcript online but the IRS website keeps giving me errors or saying it's down for maintenance. Do you know if there's any way to request it by mail or something?

Yeah the website is trash. You can request by mail but it takes like 10 days to arrive. Try taxr.ai, my friend used it and it breaks down your transcript into normal language even if you don't know what the codes mean.

Check if you claimed any credits like earned income or recovery rebate. Those get extra scrutiny and cause delays.

Did u check for a 570 or 971 code on your transcript? Those usually indicate there's some issue that needs to be resolved.

I can't get into my transcript no matter what I try. The site keeps giving me errors or saying it's under maintenance.

Yeah the IRS site is garbage. Try early morning or late night when fewer people are on. Or honestly just call them directly using Claimyr. I wasted so much time trying to figure it out myself when a 10-minute convo with an agent solved everything.

The IRS is severely backlogged this year. I filed 2/20 and just got my refund last week. Never got any updates on WMR, it just randomly showed up in my account one day. Patience is the only option unfortunately.

My tax person told me they're seeing 8-10 week waits for most returns this year, even "simple" ones. Its not just you.

I was in the same boat. Filed early March, nothing for weeks. I finally broke down and used taxr.ai to figure out what was going on with my transcript. Turns out there was a small math error that was holding everything up. The tool explained exactly what was happening and predicted I'd get my refund on May 12th - got it May 14th, pretty darn close! Saved me from going insane checking WMR every day.

Honestly after spending 9 weeks stressed out of my mind checking WMR daily and trying to decipher my transcript, it was worth every penny. The peace of mind alone knowing exactly what was happening instead of being in the dark was priceless.

Be careful, could be identity verification. I had to wait 9 weeks then got a letter saying I needed to verify my identity before they'd continue processing. Super annoying. Keep an eye on your mail.

How do I know if that's what's happening with mine? Will they definitely send a letter?

Yes they'll send a letter, but it could take 2 months to arrive 🙄 If you call them they can tell you immediately if that's the holdup. I finally got through using claimyr.com after wasting hours on hold myself.
