E-filed in late February but return still stuck on "Received" - no updates, no transcript, no notices
Filed my 2023 taxes electronically on February 23rd and got the confirmation that the IRS received it. Its now been over 2 months and NOTHING has changed on the Where's My Refund tool - still just says "Return Received". I've tried checking my transcript online but there's nothing there either, just my previous years. I haven't gotten any letters or notices in the mail about problems. I was expecting around $3500 back so this is really frustrating. Has this happened to anyone else this year? Is there anything I can do besides just wait?

This is unfortunately very common this year. The IRS is severely backlogged and many people who filed in February are still waiting. A few things you should try: 1. Double check the Where's My Refund tool using the exact refund amount you claimed on your return 2. Try to access your account transcript (not just return transcript) - this sometimes shows pending actions 3. Verify your return was actually accepted (not just received) by checking your tax software confirmation 4. If it's been more than 21 days since filing, you can try calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 5. Check if you claimed certain credits like EITC or Additional Child Tax Credit which automatically delay processing Sometimes the IRS freezes returns for identity verification without sending notice right away. You might receive a letter in the coming weeks asking you to verify your identity. Other times they're just slow with no explanation.

•Thanks for the detailed reply. I double checked and my return was definitely accepted not just received. I tried calling the IRS like 5 times but can never get through - just automated messages then disconnects. And no, I didn't claim EITC or Child Tax Credit, pretty straightforward return actually.

•I had the same issue last year and FINALLY got through to someone after trying for weeks. They told me my return was pulled for "random review" but there was nothing actually wrong with it 🙄

•Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through in about 20 mins that way last month

You should check out taxr.ai - it literally saved me weeks of frustration when I was in the exact same situation. Instead of trying to decode the IRS website or waiting on hold forever, it analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was happening with my return. turns out there was a simple verification issue that I never would have figured out on my own. The tool pinpointed the exact issue and told me what to do next. Way better than posting here and trying to piece together random advice! https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•OMG it does SO much more. It actually interprets all the codes and dates and explains what's happening in plain english. It spots issues and tells you exactly what to do next. I was about to hire a tax pro but this was way cheaper and faster. Basically gives you the same info a pro would charge you hundreds for.

•another app promising miracles? 🙄 does it actually work or just tell you generic stuff you could find on google?

Sophia Long
•It's not generic at all! That's what shocked me. It picks up on specific code combinations on your transcript that most people (including me) would never understand. My return was stuck for weeks and the app immediately spotted that I had a review code that was resolved but the refund release was pending manual approval. Saved me from calling the IRS daily and worrying something was wrong! Everyone dealing with IRS bs should be using this.

After 6 weeks of waiting with zero updates, I finally found a way to get through to an actual human at the IRS using the Claimyr app. Got a callback within 30 minutes after trying to call myself for WEEKS with no luck. The agent told me my return was selected for a review but was just sitting in a queue - she pushed it through while I was on the phone! My refund was direct deposited 8 days later. Honestly it was the best money I've ever spent to finally get answers instead of stressing every day. Check out claimyr.com if you're desperate to talk to someone.

•wait is this for real? i've been trying to get through to the IRS for a MONTH straight.

•Yes 100% real! It basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is available. I was skeptical too but desperate after trying everything else. talking to an actual agent solved my issue immediately.

•I tried it last month and it worked exactly as described. Got a callback in about an hour. Definitely beats calling 20 times a day and getting nowhere.

•Not all heroes wear capes. Just tried this and got through after being hung up on by the IRS for a week straight. My refund was stuck in review and the agent was able to release it while I was on the phone!

Mine took 4 months last year with no updates or explanations. When I finally got my refund there was no explanation for the delay. The IRS is just overwhelmed and understaffed. All you can do is wait or try to call a million times.

Do you have access to your account transcript? Thats the best way to see what's really happening. The WMR tool is notoriously unreliable and sometimes doesnt update for weeks even when things are moving with your return.

•I tried to access my transcript online but there's nothing there for 2023, just previous years. I guess that means they haven't even started processing it?

Ella Lewis
•Yeah unfortunately that usually means processing hasn't really started. Did you file on paper or electronically?

•Electronically through TurboTax. Got the acceptance email and everything. So frustrating.

Check if you have any past due debts like student loans, child support, or state taxes. Sometimes your refund gets offset to pay those without much notice. Could also be identity verification issue - they don't always send the letter right away.

If you filed with a tax preparer, check with them. Sometimes they can see info that doesn't show up on WMR.

•Filed myself with TurboTax so unfortunately that's not an option

Did u claim the earned income tax credit? That automatically delays processing until at least mid-February.

Rachel Clark
•Nope, didn't claim that. Pretty simple return actually, just W2 income, standard deduction, nothing fancy.

I had this problem and turns out I had a math error on my return. They never sent me a notice, but when I finally got through to someone on the phone, they told me what happened. The error was fixed but they had to manually review which caused a long delay.

Just a heads up - i was in literally THE EXACT same situation (filed in Feb, stuck on received) and I finally got my refund last week with no warning or status updates. It just suddenly appeared in my bank account. The WMR tool STILL says "received" even though I got my money. The system is completely broken this year.

•That gives me a little hope! Did you get the full amount you were expecting?

Max Knight
•Yep! Full amount plus a tiny bit of interest for the delay actually.

Have you tried checking your transcript on the IRS website? Sometimes that shows info that WMR doesn't.

•Tried that but there's no 2023 transcript available yet 😕

CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSPERSON! Seriously. I was in the exact same boat for 3 months, called my rep's office, and they have a dedicated staff member who deals with IRS issues. Got my refund 2 weeks after they intervened.

•100% this! Congressional inquiries get fast-tracked. The IRS actually has a separate department that handles these requests.

I was in a similar situation and was about to lose my mind until I tried taxr.ai - it analyzed my transcript and showed me exactly why my refund was delayed (identity verification that I never received notice about). Seriously, I was shocked at how much clearer it made everything. The IRS website is useless compared to this! https://taxr.ai

•never heard of this before. is it legit?

Aidan Hudson
•Absolutely! It basically does what an experienced tax pro would do - read all those weird codes on your transcript and tell you what's actually happening with your return. It even gave me a timeline of when to expect my refund based on my specific situation. Saved me hours of research and confusion.

Same here! Filed early March and still stuck on received. I called the IRS and they just told me to "be patient" and that "some returns take longer to process." So unhelpful!

After calling the IRS for WEEKS and never getting through, I used this app called Claimyr and got a callback in 40 minutes. The agent told me my return was flagged for a simple verification that I needed to complete. Now my refund is being processed. Talking to a live agent was the only thing that worked - check out claimyr.com if you're getting nowhere like I was.
