Filed and Accepted Jan 27th - Transcript Shows Nothing - Anyone Else?

I filed and was accepted on January 27th according to TurboTax. Absolutely zero update since then. Checked the IRS Where's My Refund tool and it still just shows "Return Received" status. I managed to access my transcript for 2023 on the IRS website but there's nothing on it related to my return. Anyone else in this same boat? Starting to worry since the IRS.gov says most refunds should be issued within 21 days...

I was in exactly the same situation last year. Here's what I learned through the process: 1. First, check that your return was actually accepted by the IRS, not just received by the tax software 2. If it shows "accepted," that means the IRS has it in their system 3. During busy periods (especially January-March), the IRS processing systems can take 4-6 weeks to update transcripts 4. The "Where's My Refund" tool often doesn't update until processing is nearly complete 5. A blank transcript usually means your return is in the queue but hasn't been processed yet I was so relieved when mine finally updated after about 5 weeks of nothing!

Did you notice any changes to your account transcript before your return transcript updated? I'm seeing some people mention account transcript updates first, but mine is completely empty too.

Thank you for breaking this down! I need my refund ASAP for a medical bill due next week, and this timeline is exactly what I needed to know. Sounds like I might need to make payment arrangements.

According to IRS Publication 2043 and Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1, the normal processing time for electronically filed returns is indeed 21 days, but that's merely the standard timeframe, not a guarantee. Last year, my transcript remained empty for 32 days before suddenly populating with all information at once. The system operates in batches rather than real-time updates, which explains the sudden appearance of information after prolonged periods of no activity.

I filed on January 25th and was in the exact same situation until exactly 31 days later. My transcript was completely empty despite being accepted. I finally tried https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it appeared, and it explained that my return had been selected for the standard verification process that affects approximately 18.7% of early filers. The tool identified my cycle code as 20240805, which meant my refund would process on February 28th. Sure enough, I received my $4,312 refund via direct deposit on March 4th, exactly as predicted. Saved me hours of trying to decode those transcript codes myself.

This happened to me last year and the year before. Based on my experience, this is what's likely happening: Your return is in what they call the "processing queue" but hasn't been assigned to a processing batch yet. In 2022, I filed on January 31st and my transcript didn't show anything until February 26th. In 2023, I filed on January 29th and had to wait until March 2nd to see any transcript updates. The most frustrating part is that there's no transparency in the process. The IRS systems don't show real-time status - they only update after certain processing milestones are completed.

Do you know if claiming certain credits affects this timeline? I've heard the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Credit can trigger additional verification processes.

Thanks for sharing your timeline! I'm on day 33 since acceptance and this gives me hope that I'm not stuck in some audit limbo. Seeing others with similar experiences really helps with the anxiety.

The IRS FAQ page actually mentions this exact scenario! According to IRS.gov/refunds, "Some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, including when a return is incomplete, needs further review, or is affected by identity theft or fraud." I'm relieved to see this is common enough to be in their FAQs.

I might be able to help... I had this same issue and after waiting about 5 weeks with no updates, I decided I needed to speak with someone at the IRS. I tried calling their main number but couldn't get through after multiple attempts. I eventually used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) which connected me to an IRS agent in about 25 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was in the system but was just waiting in the processing queue. Nothing was wrong - it just hadn't been processed yet. Having that confirmation gave me peace of mind instead of wondering if something was missing or incorrect. Might be worth considering if you want definitive answers.

Based on what you've described, your return is likely in what's called the "pre-processing queue." I've tracked this pattern for several years: 1. On January 27, 2024, you filed and received acceptance 2. Today is February 29, 2024, so it's been 33 days 3. For returns filed between January 23-31, 2024, the current average processing time is 35-42 days Your transcript will likely update all at once rather than gradually. The empty transcript is actually normal at this stage. If you don't see any updates by March 9th (around the 42-day mark), then I would recommend calling the IRS directly. The key thing to watch for is the "846" code on your transcript when it appears - that's your refund date.

OMG YES! I'm in EXACTLY the same situation and it's making me crazy!!! Filed Jan 24th, accepted same day, and NOTHING since then! My transcript is completely empty for 2023 even though I can access it. WMR just has the stupid first bar and says "still processing" when I check it. I've been counting on this money for bills and my landlord is NOT understanding about the delay. This is so frustrating! Last year I had my refund within 10 days of filing, so I don't understand why it's taking forever this time. 😡 Really hope we both see movement soon. This waiting game is ridiculous.
