Worried about tax refund delay after last year's June payout - transcript not updating after 14 days

Had a nightmare with my return last tax season. The IRS didn't release my refund until mid-July due to what they called a "processing error" in their system. Now I'm back in the same boat I think. Filed on March 5th through TurboTax, got my acceptance notice same day. Tomorrow marks 14 days since filing and my transcript hasn't updated at all. Still showing N/A for 2023. When I check Where's My Refund it just says it's still processing. I'm getting really anxious because I really need this money for some upcoming bills. Is anyone else experiencing delays already this year? I'm worried I'm about to go through another 4 month wait like last year.

The IRS is having a lot of processing delays this year, especially with returns filed in early March. Many taxpayers are experiencing similar issues with their transcripts not updating for 14-21 days. Here's what might be happening: • The IRS is working through a backlog from the previous tax season • Your return could be in the error resolution department if there were any discrepancies • The "Where's My Refund" tool typically updates weekly (usually overnight Wednesday to Thursday) • Transcripts often don't update until the return has been fully processed I recommend checking your transcript again in about 5-7 days. If you don't see any movement by the 21-day mark, you might want to call the IRS directly. Unfortunately, your return might just be caught in their processing delays and there's nothing specifically wrong with it. Don't panic yet - many returns go beyond the standard 21-day processing time without any real issues.

Thanks for this detailed response. When you say error resolution, does that mean I did something wrong on my return? I double checked everything before submitting.

Not necessarily your mistake. The error department handles discrepancies between what you reported and what the IRS has on file - could be an employer reporting issue, stimulus or CTC verification, or even just random selection. most errors resolve themselves without you needing to do anything.

Adding to this - if your return shows code 570 or 971 when it finally updates, that's an indication it's being manually reviewed. But seriously, 14 days is still well within normal processing time.

I was in the exact same situation and was so frustrated trying to understand what was happening with my refund. I kept checking the IRS website and my transcript but couldn't make sense of all the codes and dates. A friend recommended this tool called taxr.ai and it literally saved me hours of confusion. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was happening and when I could expect my refund. So much better than guessing and stressing! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It analyzes all the codes and dates on your transcript and explains what each means in plain english. It also gives you a timeline prediction for when you'll get your refund based on your specific situation. I was skeptical at first too but it was crazy accurate for me!

OMG I just tried this and it's incredible! It explained exactly what was happening with my return when I've been completely in the dark for weeks. Best tool ever for dealing with the IRS nightmare. Will be telling everyone about this!

Does it have access to ur personal info? Seems sketchy

I used it yesterday - you upload your transcript and it explains everything. Told me my refund is coming next Wednesday which matches the cycle code! Way better than the confusing IRS site.

After going thru the same BS last year (waited till august for my refund!), I found a way to actually talk to an IRS agent. Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me skip the hold times and got a live agent to call ME back. The agent was able to tell me my exact refund date and explain the delay. Totally worth it to actually talk to someone instead of checking WMR obsessively and getting zero info.

This sounds too good to be true. The IRS never calls anyone back 🙄

I was super skeptical too but it actually works. They basically navigate the phone system for you and get you in the callback queue. Saved me hours of being on hold. The agent who called me was able to release my refund that had been stuck for weeks.

0 coins

how much did it cost

0 coins

honestly best money I've spent in a long time considering I got my $3400 refund unstuck. Compared to spending hours on hold or waiting months for a letter, it was a no-brainer for me.

Just tried this and got a call back from an IRS agent in 2 hours after trying to call myself for 3 days straight! They found a simple verification issue and fixed it on the spot. Refund should be here next week. 10/10 would recommend 👍

I'm on day 24 and still no update. Transcript empty, WMR says still processing. Todays IRS is a joke.

Same boat, day 31. Called them last week and they said "just keep waiting" 🤬

0 coins

day 42 here. finally got movement yesterday. hang in there

0 coins

The 14-21 day timeline they give is basically useless. Last year I filed February 10th and didnt get my refund till April 29th. This year filed February 2nd and just got it yesterday. The IRS is severely understaffed and there systems are from like the 1970s lol

If your transcript isn't updating, you're probably facing a manual review. This happened to me last year - no movement until suddenly my transcript updated with a 570 code (additional account action pending) followed by 571 (resolved) about a week later. Got my refund 8 days after that. Just be patient, but if you hit the 21 day mark with no updates, definitely call them.

How do you even get through to talk to someone? Every time I try it says they're experiencing high call volume and hangs up on me.

0 coins

You gotta call right when they open at 7am. Or use claimyr.com which is what I did - they get you a callback from an agent. Talking to an actual person is the only way to get real answers about your refund.

Pro tip: press 1 then 2 then 1 then 3 then 2 when you call. Gets you to the refund department faster. Still a wait but better than getting hung up on 👍

Do you have kids? If you claimed EIC or ACTC they legally can't issue refunds before mid-February. Even tho that's passed now, those returns typically take longer to process.

0 coins

No kids, just a standard return with W2 income. Nothing complicated which is why I'm confused about the delay.

0 coins

That is weird. Check your transcript for any codes in the 500 range. Could be a random verification hold. they've been doing more of those lately to combat identity theft.

I had this happen to me. Didn't see anything on my transcript for almost 3 weeks, then suddenly it updated with a bunch of codes. Ended up being some identity verification thing - had to go online and verify myself through id.me. After that it was processed in about 5 days. Check and see if they sent you any letters.

i was sooooo frustrated trying to figure out my transcript...it was like reading another language! i found this site called taxr.ai and it analyzed everything and told me exactly what was going on and when to expect my refund. way easier than playing detective with all those weird codes. https://taxr.ai

another ad 🙄 is this real or just more spam?

0 coins

not an ad! check my post history. i was stuck for 42 days with my refund and this helped me figure out what was actually happening. just passing along what worked for me...

0 coins

Just tried it and it's actually really good. Explained my transcript way better than the IRS phone rep did!

Almost certainly a path A versus a path B situation. Path A is direct deposit within 21 days. Path B can take 4-8 weeks. Nothing wrong with ur return necessarily, just random selection for additional review. Welcome to IRS hell my friend. We've been expecting you. 😈

14 days isnt that long tbh. Last year I waited 117 days. Yes I counted every single one of them. The year before was 87 days. The IRS is not equipped to handle the volume they get.

0 coins

seriously! people freaking out after 2 weeks when some of us are still waiting on 2022 returns 💀

0 coins

they spent how many billions on "inflation reduction" but can't hire enough people to process tax returns on time? make it make sense 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

have you checked your account transcript? sometimes that updates before the return transcript. look for an 846 code - that's your refund date.

0 coins

All my transcripts show N/A for 2023 tax year. Nothing has been processed at all it seems.

0 coins

yeah you're still in the initial processing phase then. give it another week before you start worrying too much. they're just really backed up this year.

0 coins

There's 2 dates that matter - the processing date and the refund date. Your processing date is a placeholder that will keep moving until they're done reviewing. Even tho we all freak out when our transcripts dont update, it's sadly normal now to wait way beyond 21 days. My advice is get an IRS account online so you can check your transcript (better than the WMR tool) and try not to check more than once a week or you'll drive yourself crazy.

I was stuck in refund limbo for six weeks! finally got tired of the stress and used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get a callback from an agent. Found out my employer had entered my SSN wrong on one W2 and that's what held everything up. Agent fixed it while I was on the phone and my refund came 9 days later. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone who can actually look at your file.

0 coins

how did the callback work? did they actually know why your refund was delayed?

0 coins

Yep! The agent had full access to my file and could see exactly where it was in processing. She saw the mismatch with my SSN right away and put in a correction. Was way better than the vague "still processing" message on the website.

0 coins

did this right after seeing your comment and just got off the phone with an agent. turns out my address didn't match what they had on file! she fixed it and my refund should process now. thank you!!

I'm convinced the IRS just makes stuff up as they go along. My brother and I filed the exact same day with nearly identical situations - he got his refund in 8 days and I'm on day 37 with no updates. 🤡 system

if your status bar on Where's My Refund disappeared, that usually means your return is in the error department. Don't panic tho, most errors resolve automatically and you'll get your refund, just with a delay. If they need any info from you, they'll send a letter.

0 coins

Yes! My status bar did disappear about a week ago. I thought the site was just glitching.

0 coins

that's your answer then! You're in error resolution. Either wait it out or call them, but definitely don't expect that refund in the next few days. Could be a couple more weeks.

0 coins

ok i hve a theory - returns filed the first week of March are getting delayed bcuz everyone rushing to file early after last yrs mess. im on day 19, filed march 3, nothing has updated. sister filed march 12 and already got her deposit date. makes no sense.

instead of checking wmr every day and driving urself crazy, I highly recommend the taxr.ai tool. it explains your transcript in plain english and gives you way more info than the generic IRS messages. saved my sanity this year and was 100% accurate on when my refund would come.

0 coins

just checked this out and WOW it's literally the first time I've understood my transcript. wish I'd known about this sooner!

0 coins

I totally understand your anxiety about this - been there myself! 14 days really isn't that long in IRS time, even though it feels like forever when you're waiting for money you need. The fact that your transcript still shows N/A and your status bar disappeared on Where's My Refund suggests your return is probably in some kind of review queue, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong with it. Given that you had issues last year, I'd recommend being proactive this time. Wait until you hit the 21-day mark, then either call the IRS first thing in the morning (7am sharp) or consider using one of those callback services people mentioned. At least then you'll know exactly what's happening instead of just guessing. Try not to stress too much - the vast majority of these delays resolve themselves, just with some extra waiting time. Your return will eventually process, even if it takes longer than you'd like.
