Filed on 3/15, accepted 3/18, but WMR still says 'processing' - anyone else waiting from mid-March?

I filed my return through TurboTax on March 15 and got the acceptance notification on March 18. It's been over 7 weeks now and when I check Where's My Refund it just says 'Your tax return is still being processed.' I was expecting around $4,200 back this year which I really need for some home repairs. Has anyone else filed around mid-March still waiting? I've checked my transcript online but don't understand all the codes - there's an 846 code from last year but nothing new. I called the IRS twice but couldn't get through to a real person. Starting to get worried something's wrong with my return.

Luca Greco

Based on what you're describing, your return is likely caught in the standard processing delay. The 846 code you're seeing is from last year's refund - it stands for "refund issued." When you get a new 846 code with a current date, that will indicate your refund is being released. Here's what's happening: 1. Returns with certain credits (like EITC or Child Tax Credit) get additional scrutiny 2. The IRS is still behind from pandemic backlogs 3. The 846 code appears last in the process after verification Check your transcript for code 570 (additional account action pending) or 971 (notice issued) which might indicate why there's a hold. Without those, you're likely just in the regular queue. The "21 day" guideline is misleading - many perfectly normal returns are taking 8-12 weeks this season.

Thanks for the explanation! I did claim Child Tax Credit this year. I'll check for those codes you mentioned.

Yep this is correct. I work with returns all day and code 846 is what you're looking for. IRS is super backlogged this year especially with returns claiming certain credits.

Im in the exact same boat! filed 3/12, accepted 3/14, and still nothing but "processing" 🙄 this is ridiculous

You should try taxr.ai - it's honestly been a game changer for me. Instead of trying to decipher all those confusing transcript codes myself and playing detective, it just analyzes everything and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund and what each code means. I was in the same situation last month wondering why my refund was delayed and taxr.ai showed me it was because of a tax credit verification. Now I check it weekly to see my updates. It's way better than the "still processing" message. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It reads your transcript and then explains everything in plain english! It shows what stage your return is in and why it might be delayed. It even predicts when you'll get your refund based on the actual data. I've been recommending it to everyone I know dealing with tax stuff. So much better than trying to Google every code.

Just tried it and WOW - this is exactly what I needed! It told me my return is in review because of the child tax credit but should be released by next week. Finally some actual info instead of the vague IRS messages. Thanks for sharing this!

does it cost money? seems kinda sus that there's tools that can tell you more than the actual IRS website 🤔

It does have a fee but honestly it was worth every penny for me. It's not doing anything magical, just interpreting the actual data from your transcript that the IRS already provides but in a way normal humans can understand lol. Saved me hours of stress and confusion.

After weeks of trying to get thru to the IRS with no success, I finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual human IRS agent in about 45 minutes! They explained that my return was flagged for manual review because of the home office deduction I took. The agent was able to release it while I was on the phone. Best money i ever spent to stop the endless waiting and wondering. My refund hit my account 4 days later.

is this for real? ive been calling the IRS for literal weeks and can never get through

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call like 30 times myself. It basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when it reaches an agent. Took like 45 min vs the hours I wasted trying myself.

It was totally worth whatever I paid to finally get my questions answered and my refund released. After spending weeks trying to call myself and getting nothing but frustration, being able to actually talk to someone who could help was priceless.

I can back this up, it works. Used it last year when my employer filed my W2 incorrectly and I needed to talk to someone asap. Only way I could get through.

I filed 3/10, accepted 3/13 and I'm still stuck on processing too. This is ridiculous. Last year I had my refund within 2 weeks. Trying to buy a new car and really counting on this money.

Mine was accepted 3/16 and I JUST got my refund yesterday. No explanation for the delay, no special circumstances or complicated return. Just the IRS being the IRS I guess. Hang in there, it should come soon!

That gives me hope! Did your WMR tool update before you got the refund or did it just show up?

WMR updated to approved the day before the deposit hit. But I'd been checking my transcript daily and saw the 846 code appear about 3 days before I got the money.

The IRS is a joke this year. I filed JANUARY 29th and just got my refund last week! Almost 3 months of waiting with zero explanation. When I finally got through to someone on the phone they just said "it's still processing" like thanks for nothing 🙄

Yeah it was brutal. I needed that money for medical bills so I had to put everything on credit cards and now I'm paying interest because the IRS couldn't do their job on time. And they have the nerve to charge us penalties if we file late! 🤬

Are you claiming any credits? Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, etc? Those automatically get additional review and take longer. Also check your transcript for code 570 or 971 - those indicate there's an issue they're reviewing.

0 coins

-

Zara Malik

Yes, I claimed Child Tax Credit for my two kids. I don't see a 570 code but there is a cycle date of 20231305 - what does that mean?

0 coins

-

15d

Liam McGuire

The cycle date (20231305) means your return was processed in the 13th week of 2023, 5th day. Child Tax Credit returns are taking longer this year - they're doing extra verification to prevent fraud. Without a 570 code, you're probably just in the regular queue and should see movement soon.

i was in EXACTLY the same situation. filed 3/14 and nothing for 8 weeks. i finally broke down and paid for taxr.ai to read my transcript since i couldnt understand all the codes. turns out i had an adjustment bc i miscalculated a credit but they never sent me a letter. got my (slightly smaller) refund 3 days later. https://taxr.ai saved me weeks more of waiting and wondering.

it just helps you interpret your transcript - same info you already get from the IRS website but explained in plain english. totally changed my understanding of what was happening. you still log into your own irs account.

Here's a tip: if your refund is simple (W2 only, standard deduction) and you filed correctly, the longest it should take is 8 weeks. If you're past that, call the IRS because there might be an issue they haven't notified you about. Sometimes they flag returns randomly for "verification" and they just sit there until someone looks at them.

I filed 3/16, accepted 3/19, got my refund exactly 6 weeks later. No updates on WMR the entire time - it just said processing until suddenly it said approved, then refund issued the next day. $3,150 deposited 2 days after that. The system is broken, but hang in there.

The most helpful thing I ever did was getting through to a real IRS agent using Claimyr. I was in the exact same boat - filed in march, waiting for weeks with no updates. The agent I talked to explained exactly why my return was delayed (I had moved mid-year and they were verifying my address) and released it while I was on the phone. Got my $3800 refund 5 days later. claimyr.com saved me from weeks more of waiting.

Yes it really works! It somehow navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you, then calls you when it gets through to an agent. After wasting hours trying to call myself, this was totally worth it to finally get answers.

I've worked tax prep for 15 years. This is normal now post-COVID. The IRS is SEVERELY understaffed and returns with any credits or deductions are taking 8-12 weeks minimum. The 21 day thing they advertise is complete fiction at this point. Be patient, and if you hit 12 weeks with no update, then start calling.

0 coins

-

CyberSiren

Is there anything people can do to speed up the process? Or just wait?

0 coins

-

15d

Ava Thompson

Honestly just wait unless you hit that 12 week mark. Calling before then is usually a waste of time because they'll just tell you it's still processing. One exception: if your transcript shows codes 570/971, that means there's a specific issue and calling might help resolve it faster.

I tried to be cool and wait patiently but after 9 weeks I was losing my mind. Spent $20 on taxr.ai to decode my transcript and find out what was actually happening instead of the vague WMR messages. Found out my return was adjusted due to a math error but would be processed soon. Got my deposit 5 days later. Sometimes you need actual information not just "please wait" messages from the IRS.

Looks interesting. Do they explain what all those weird codes on the transcript mean?

0 coins

Yes! It explains every code in plain language and tells you exactly what stage your return is in and why. Way better than trying to google each code individually. I'm definitely using it next year from the beginning.

Don't panic yet. According to my tax guy, the IRS has been randomly selecting returns for "verification" this year even when there's nothing wrong with them. Basically a spot check system that's causing delays. Check your transcript for TC 420 code - that means random review.

Anyone else notice how the IRS expects us to pay immediately if we owe them, but takes their sweet time when THEY owe US? 🙄 Make it make sense.

AND they charge interest and penalties if we're late! But do we get interest when they're late with our refunds? Nope! (unless it's over 45 days from filing deadline which barely ever happens

Used to work for IRS. If you want results, call the Taxpayer Advocate Service instead of the main IRS line. They can help if your refund is causing financial hardship (like if you need it for medical bills, preventing eviction, etc). Much easier to get through and they have authority to push refunds through faster in hardship cases.

1-877-777-4778 is the national line, but each state has local offices too that are sometimes easier to reach. Just be prepared to document your hardship.

After struggling to reach the IRS for weeks, I got desperate and tried Claimyr (claimyr.com). Got a call back with an actual IRS agent in about an hour. Turns out my return was stuck because they couldn't verify my identity since I moved last year. The agent cleared it while I was on the phone and my refund was deposited 6 days later. Such a relief after 7 weeks of silence.

I literally just used this yesterday! After waiting for 8 weeks with no updates, the agent told me my return was just sitting there waiting for someone to look at it. They approved it while I was on the phone. Best decision ever after all that frustration.
