IRS account showing 570/971 codes on transcript - refund on hold for months

Filed my taxes electronically on April 7th through TurboTax and got the acceptance notification two days later. I was expecting a refund of about $5,875 and WMR showed the standard "still processing" message. After waiting a month with no updates, I finally checked my transcript online and saw code 570 (additional account action pending) with a date of June 8 and code 971 (notice issued) with the same date. It's now almost July and I haven't received any letter yet. My transcript still has no 846 code for a refund date. I called the IRS 3 times but couldn't get through to an actual person - just the automated system saying my return is still being processed. Has anyone experienced this and actually gotten their refund? How long did it take? I'm wondering if I should try to visit my local IRS office at this point because I desperately need this money.

This is definitely frustrating! The 570/971 combo usually means the IRS has flagged something on your return that needs verification. The 971 means they've sent you a letter explaining what they need from you. Since the letter hasn't arrived yet, here's what you should do: • Check your address on file with the IRS to make sure it's correct • Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (early morning works best) • Create an ID.me account if you haven't already and check for any notices in your online account • If you claimed any tax credits like EIC, Child Tax Credit, or Recovery Rebate Credit, these often trigger reviews I've found using taxr.ai incredibly helpful for understanding my transcript and predicting what's happening with my refund. It analyzes all your codes and tells you exactly what's going on rather than trying to piece it together yourself. I've been recommending it to everyone dealing with these issues: https://taxr.ai

any idea how long the 570 hold typically lasts? mine has been sitting for over 2 months now

0 coins

It really varies, unfortunately. I've seen some resolved in 3-4 weeks, others take 3+ months. It depends on what triggered the review and how backed up the IRS is.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does WAY more than just read it! It analyzes all the codes together, explains what each means specifically for YOUR situation, and gives you a timeline prediction. It even tells you what specific action you should take next. I was so confused before using it but now I actually understand what's happening with my refund.

OMG this was exactly what I needed!!! I've been trying to figure out my transcript for WEEKS and this broke it down in seconds. It even predicted exactly when my refund would come - and it was spot on! Everyone dealing with IRS delays needs to try this asap!

The absolute best thing I did was use this service called Claimyr which got me a callback from an IRS agent in like 2 hours (claimyr.com). I had these exact same codes and had been waiting since February! Turns out they needed to verify my identity but the letter got lost in the mail. The agent cleared it up immediately and my refund was issued the next week. Without getting through to a live person, I'd probably still be waiting. Seriously - best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered.

Is this real? Seems sus that there's a service that can magically get through to the IRS when nobody else can 🤔

0 coins

Totally get the skepticism - I felt the same way! But it actually works. They basically navigate the IRS phone tree for you and secure a spot in the callback queue. The IRS system itself calls you back - Claimyr just handles the nightmare process of getting into the queue.

0 coins

how much did that cost you? worth it?

0 coins

Considering I was waiting on almost $6k in refund money that was just sitting there for months, and I spent hours trying to get through myself... absolutely worth every penny. Talking to an agent got my refund released within days.

0 coins

Wait so does the irs actually call you back? or is it the service?

0 coins

It's the IRS that calls you back. The service just helps you get in line for a callback without having to waste hours on hold or getting disconnected.

I had the exact same codes back in 2023! The 971 notice took forever to arrive (almost 3 weeks after the date on my transcript). In my case, they were verifying some education credits I claimed. I responded to their letter with the requested documents and waited another 2 months before finally getting my refund. The most frustrating part was not knowing what was happening. Just keep checking your mail and be patient - eventually you'll get that notice explaining what they need.

the entire system is a joke. they expect us to file perfectly on time but then take 6+ months to process and give zero updates. then they have the audacity to charge penalties and interest when THEY make mistakes. 🤡

0 coins

THIS!!! And try getting someone on the phone!! I spent 4 hours on hold last week only to get disconnected. 💀

and yet somehow they processed my $800 i owed them in like 2.5 seconds flat 🙃

0 coins

lmaooo of coarse they did! funny how that works 🧐

I had those codes and waited 5 months for my refund last year. Check your mailbox religiously because if you miss their letter and don't respond, they'll just let it sit. Also try calling the tax advocate service (not the regular IRS line) - sometimes they can help if you have a hardship situation.

Tax advocate service is so backed up tho. My brother applied in April and still hasn't been assigned an advocate.

0 coins

Yea ur right, they're swamped these days. Worth a shot though if OP is in a dire financial situation.

Does your transcript show a TC 150 for the tax return being processed? What credits did you claim? Mine was on hold for income verification (I'm self-employed) and it took them literally 7 months to release my refund.

0 coins

Yes I have the TC 150 from 5/18. I claimed EIC and the education credit. Did they send you any letters during those 7 months?

0 coins

They sent ONE letter about 5 weeks after the 971 code showed up, asking for proof of income. I sent all the docs they requested and then heard absolutely nothing for another 5 months. No updates, no new letters, nada. Then suddenly one day the 846 refund code appeared.

same boat! ive been dealing with thsi since march. im at the point where im just assuming im not getting a refund this year 😂

0 coins

its almost always identity verification or income verification. most likely they send a letter to verify ur identity. check if you have access to your irs account online - sometimes the letters are posted there before they arrive in mail. just keep checking ur account transcripts weekly for updates.

0 coins

i've also heard the current date on your account transcript matters more than the dates listed next to the codes. if your account transcript shows a recent date it means they're actively working on it.

0 coins

yes! this is true. the "as of" date at the top changes when they're actively reviewing ur case

I finally cracked the code on my tax transcript by using taxr.ai - it pointed out exactly what was happening that I totally missed! My account had a freeze code that needed to be addressed, but the IRS letter never actually reached me. The tool walked me through what steps to take, who to contact, and exactly what to say. Saved me from waiting another 2 months for sure! https://taxr.ai

is this one of those sites that asks for all your personal info? not trying to get my identity stolen while im already dealing with the irs 👀

0 coins

Nah, you just upload your transcript that you already downloaded from the IRS website. It analyzes the document - same info you already shared here honestly. Saved me tons of headache trying to decode all those numbers and codes myself.

0 coins

i used it too after hearing about it on here. wish i had known about it months ago instead of stressing every day wondering what was happening with my refund!

After not being able to reach a human at the IRS for weeks, I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback from an IRS rep in under an hour. Turned out they needed one simple document from me that I never received a letter about. Got my $4,200 refund a week later! Talking to an actual person was the only thing that finally moved this forward.

0 coins

dude thats so random lol how does some random company get you through to the IRS?

0 coins

They use some automated system to navigate the phone maze and secure a spot in the callback queue. Instead of YOU wasting hours trying to get through, they do the hard part. When they get to the front of the line, the IRS calls YOU directly.

0 coins

just tried this and got a call from the IRS in 45 minutes... they confirmed my letter was sent to an old address even though i updated everything. refund should be released by next week!! 🙌

0 coins

if u have access to a fax machine, try faxing a letter to the IRS asking about the status of your return. include your name, ssn, filing status, and a copy of your return. might sound old school but i got a response within a week when i did this.

The IRS is still processing millions of backlogged returns from previous years. Those codes usually indicate they're reviewing something specific on your return. Could be a math error, missing form, or verification of credits. The notice should explain what they need. I'm a tax preparer and about 70% of my clients are experiencing delays this year.

0 coins

has the situation gotten better or worse this year compared to last year?

0 coins

Actually slightly better than 2022/2023, believe it or not. Average wait time for my clients with issues is ~12 weeks now versus ~16 weeks last year. But that's still way too long for people waiting on their money.

0 coins

I'm going through something similar right now! Filed in March and have been stuck with the 570/971 codes since April. The waiting is absolutely brutal, especially when you're counting on that money. A few things that helped me while I'm still waiting: - Set up text alerts through the IRS2Go app so you get notified of any transcript changes - Keep calling early in the morning (7-8am) - I finally got through last week and they confirmed my letter was sent but to the wrong zip code - Document everything - dates you called, reference numbers, what they told you The rep I spoke with said these identity verification cases are taking 12-16 weeks on average right now. Hang in there - I know it's frustrating but you will eventually get your refund. The system is just completely overwhelmed. Have you tried creating an online account to see if there are any notices posted there? Sometimes they show up online before the physical letter arrives.

0 coins

Thanks for the detailed response! I didn't know about the IRS2Go app text alerts - just set that up now. Super helpful tip about calling early morning too. Did the rep give you any indication of what happens if the letter keeps getting sent to the wrong address? I'm worried mine might be in the same situation since I moved earlier this year and I'm not 100% sure I updated everything properly with the IRS.

I went through this exact same situation last year! Had the 570/971 codes for almost 4 months before everything got resolved. The most important thing is to not panic - those codes are super common and usually just mean they need to verify something routine. A couple of suggestions based on my experience: - Check if your address is correct in your IRS online account. I found out they had my old apartment number which is why I never got their letter - Try calling the IRS right when they open at 7am - that's when I finally got through after weeks of busy signals - Keep checking your transcript weekly for any new codes or date changes The waiting is absolutely torture when you need that money, but in my case they eventually released the full refund plus interest for the delay. The 971 notice should arrive soon and will tell you exactly what they need from you. Once you respond to whatever they're asking for, it usually moves pretty quickly after that. Stay strong - you will get your refund! The IRS is just incredibly backed up right now but they do eventually work through everything.
