What does code 971 on my transcript mean? Is my refund delayed?
I filed my taxes electronically on April 8, 2025 and I got an acceptance notice from the IRS the same day. Its been almost 7 weeks now and I still havent received my refund of $3,740. I checked the Where's My Refund tool and it just says 'Your return is still being processed'. So today I decided to check my transcript online and I'm seeing code 971 followed by another code 570 with the same date (06-02-2025). There's also a code 150 from a week earlier. Does anyone know what this means? Will I get my refund soon or is there some kind of problem? I was counting on this money for some urgent expenses and now I'm getting worried.

Code 971 means "Notice Issued" and 570 means "Additional Account Action Pending" - basically the IRS is reviewing something on your return. This is a hold on your refund until they complete their review. The fact that both have the same date is actually common. The code 150 is just your return being processed and put into the system. You'll likely receive a letter in the mail explaining what they're reviewing. It could be identity verification, income verification, or they might be adjusting your refund amount. I'd suggest waiting for the letter before calling them - it should arrive within 1-2 weeks of the date on your transcript. If you don't receive anything by mid-June, then consider calling to find out what's happening.

•Thank you so much! Do you think I should be worried? Will I eventually get my refund or could they deny it completely?

•Most reviews are resolved in your favor, especially if you had documentation for everything you claimed. The most common issues are simple verification processes. Just be ready to respond quickly when you get their letter - that will speed things up.

•That's a relief! I'll keep an eye on my mailbox. Fingers crossed it all works out 🤞

•I'm dealing with the EXACT same codes right now. Filed March 22 and still waiting. This whole process is ridiculous 😤

I was in your exact situation last year and was so confused trying to figure out what was going on. I spent hours researching transcript codes online and still couldn't get a clear picture. Then someone recommended taxr.ai and it literally changed everything. The tool analyzed my transcript, explained every code in plain English, and gave me a timeline prediction that was spot on. Saved me so much headache trying to decode IRS language. For your situation, it would tell you exactly what that 971/570 combo means for YOUR specific case. It's insanely good! I use it every week now for my tax clients. https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It actually analyzes the pattern of codes, dates, and amounts to give you personalized insights about your specific situation. It'll tell you what's likely happening, what to expect next, and even gives estimated timelines. It can also explain notices and letters from the IRS.

•OMG I just tried taxr.ai and I'm blown away! It explained EVERYTHING about my transcript in seconds - things I've been trying to figure out for weeks. Seriously people, this is a game changer if you're dealing with the IRS. It even predicted when I'll get my refund based on my specific situation. Wish I'd known about this months ago!

•Not an ad, just sharing what worked for me after weeks of frustration. When you're stuck in IRS limbo, you'll try anything lol. But seriously, it's worth checking out if you're confused about your transcript.

After dealing with the same issue and getting nowhere with the IRS phone system (hung up on 4 times after waiting for hours), I found this calling app called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at the IRS. Their system navigated all the phone menus and held my place in line, then called me when an agent was ready to talk. The agent explained everything about my transcript and fixed the hold on my refund. Best money I ever spent considering how much time I saved and how quickly I got my refund after talking to someone. Check out claimyr.com if you're tired of the runaround.

•100% worked for me. I was skeptical too, but after trying to call myself 5 times and getting nowhere, I was desperate. They navigate all the IRS menu options for you and call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

•do they need any personal info? how does it work exactly?

•They just need your phone number to call you back when they reach an agent. No tax info or anything sensitive. They basically just handle the wait time and phone tree navigation for you. When they get someone on the line, they connect you directly.

•just tried it and got through to the IRS in 48 minutes after trying for weeks on my own. wish I'd known about this sooner!

I had these same codes appear on my transcript back in March. In my case, they were reviewing my earned income credit claim. I received a letter about 8 days after the codes appeared asking for additional documentation. After I sent everything in, it took about 3 more weeks to get my refund. Just be prepared to wait - even after you respond to their letter, it takes time for them to process everything.

the IRS is a joke. they expect us to file and pay on time but they can take as long as they want to give us OUR money back. if we were late wed be paying penalties but they can just sit on our refunds forever with no consequences 🤬

•Preach! They're holding $5200 of mine since February. Meanwhile I'm paying 22% interest on credit cards that I couldve paid off with my refund!

•This is why I always adjust my withholding to get as close to zero refund as possible. Why give the government an interest-free loan all year?

•thats smart but some of us need that lump sum for big purchases or debt payoff... plus with kids and tax credits its hard to get it exact

When I see code 971/570 combo with the same date, it's usually an auto-verification that resolves itself. Mine had those codes and then 9 days later I got a 571 (resolved) and an 846 (refund issued) code. Just hang tight, it's probably in the automated review system and should clear soon without you needing to do anything.

Laura Lopez
•Really hope that happens for me too! Did you get a letter even though yours resolved automatically?

Liv Park
•Nope, never got a letter. The system just cleared it on its own. The next time I checked my transcript the hold was gone and my refund was scheduled.

•Not everyone is that lucky tho. Mine had those codes and I ended up waiting 4 months and had to call multiple times before they fixed it. YMMV 🤷♀️

Check your transcript again in about a week. If you see a TC 571 code appear, that means the hold has been released. Then you should see an 846 code which is your refund date. The good news is that if they adjust your refund amount, they pay interest on any delays beyond 45 days after the filing deadline.

hi, former IRS employee here. the 971/570 combo means they found something they need to look at. could be a math error, missing form, income verification, or just random selection. the BEST thing you can do is wait for the letter. DO NOT CALL before you get the letter - the phone reps won't have any more info than what you can see on your transcript until the letter is generated in the system.

•Thanks for the insider info! Do you know approximately how long these reviews usually take to resolve?
0 coins
Carmella Fromis
•depends on the issue but most simple verification reviews are completed within 30 days. if they need more info from you, it depends on how quickly you respond and how backlogged they are. right now they're moving faster than the past few years

•Is it true that calling the IRS can actually delay your refund further because they put a temporary hold on your account when you call?
0 coins
Carmella Fromis
•not exactly but kinda true. calling doesn't create a new hold, but some actions the rep takes when researching your account can reset certain internal timers. if your case is already in the auto-resolution queue, a call might pull it out of that and put it in manual review which can take longer.

I'm a CPA and see this situation all the time with clients. While you're waiting, make sure you've kept all your tax documents organized in case they request verification. If they adjust your refund, you can always appeal their decision with proper documentation. Also, don't forget that if your refund is significantly delayed (beyond 45 days after April 15), the IRS will pay you interest on the delayed amount.

looking at my own transcript right now and I have the same codes from filing in February! still waitng for my $4,600 refund. this is crazy. ive called 13 times and given up after being on hold for hours each time. the tax system is completely broken.

•It's a tool that reads your transcript and explains everything in plain English - tells you what's happening with your refund and why there are delays. I used it and it predicted exactly when my refund would come through. Check it out at taxr.ai

Don't panic yet. Those codes are super common this year. The IRS has been flagging returns with certain credits for additional review. When I had this happen, I received a letter about 10 days after those codes appeared on my transcript. They just needed me to verify my identity online through ID.me, and my refund was approved about 2 weeks after that.

•That's reassuring! Was the identity verification process difficult?

•Not at all! Just had to upload my ID and take a selfie video. Took maybe 10 minutes total. Way easier than I expected.

Pro tip: if you do end up needing to call the IRS, avoid Mondays and Tuesdays - those are their busiest days. Call early morning (right when they open) on a Thursday or Friday for the best chance of getting through without a long wait. And always have all your documents ready before calling.

•truth. also avoid calling during lunch hours (11:30-1:00) and right before they close. mid-morning or mid-afternoon is the sweet spot.

•I tried all these tips and still couldn't get through after multiple attempts. Finally used claimyr.com and got a call back with an agent in about an hour. Totally worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone.

Here's a cheat sheet for the most common transcript codes: 570 = refund hold 571 = hold released 420 = audit examination 424 = examination closed 846 = refund issued 971 = notice issued 290 = additional tax assessed 291 = reduction of tax Keep checking your transcript every morning - it updates overnight.

•This is super helpful, thank you! Do you know if there's a way to see what the notice says before I actually receive it in the mail?
0 coins
Henrietta Beasley
•Unfortunately no - the transcript only shows that a notice was issued, not the content. You have to wait for the physical mail. Sometimes the account notes section will have a hint but not always.

•actually there is a way! if you call and verify your identity, some IRS reps can read you the notice over the phone before you get it in the mail. but its hit or miss if you get a rep willing to do this.

i was stuck in this exact situation for 2 MONTHS. what finally worked for me was calling my congressional representative's office. they have a dedicated case worker for IRS issues and they got my refund released in less than 2 weeks after i contacted them. worth a try if you get desperate!

Check if the 971/570 is followed by a 700 series code. If yes, you're dealing with a refund offset where they're taking some of your refund to pay past due debts like student loans, back taxes, child support, etc. If no, it's more likely just a review.

One thing thats worth noting - im seeing TONS of 971/570 codes this year compared to previous years. The IRS got extra funding to do more compliance checks. They're reviewing returns more carefully but also processing them faster once the review is complete. So while more people are seeing these codes, the resolution time is actually improved from last year.

•true. i work at a tax prep office and we've seen way more verification letters this year, but once clients respond, the processing is much faster than it was in 2023-2024.
