Filed taxes back in March, 3 months later I got a letter saying my refund is delayed, now I see 810 Freeze Code on transcript. Help?

I filed my taxes electronically on March 22nd, 2025. Got my refund accepted notification within a couple days. Was supposed to get about $4,300 back. Fast forward to late June, I received a CP05 letter saying my refund is being delayed because they need to review my return further. I finally figured out how to access my transcript online yesterday and noticed there's an 810 Freeze Code on it from July 8. There's also a 971 Notice Issued code for the same date. No other updates since then. It's now been almost 5 months since I filed. Anyone know what this means or how long I'll have to wait? My brother's refund came within 2 weeks and we filed around the same time. Getting really frustrated with this whole process.

The 810 code means the IRS has put a freeze on your account pending review. This is unfortunately pretty common these days. The 971 code means they sent you a notice - which is probably that CP05 letter you mentioned. Typically this means they're verifying your income, credits claimed, or something else on your return. It could take anywhere from 60-120 days for them to complete the review. Nothing you can really do except wait, or you can try calling them at the number on the CP05 letter to see if they need any additional information from you. Don't worry too much - a freeze doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong. It's just the IRS being extra careful with returns this year.

Thanks for the explanation! The CP05 letter mentioned I don't need to do anything unless they ask for more info. Should I just wait then or be proactive and call?

I'd recommend waiting a couple more weeks since the codes just appeared in early July. If you don't see any movement by early August, then call. Make sure you have your return and all supporting documents ready when you call.

Not the original commenter but I had the same issue last year. I waited 8 months before finally getting my refund. The system is so backed up, if you can wait I would. But if you NEED that money, definitely call.

If you want to actually understand what's going on with your transcript without spending hours researching and trying to decode everything yourself, check out taxr.ai - it's been an absolute game changer for me. I was in the same boat with weird codes on my transcript and couldn't figure out what was happening. The tool analyzed everything and explained exactly what was going on and what to expect next. It's insanely good! I use it every week now to check for updates. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It reads your transcript and then explains EVERYTHING in plain English. It tells you what each code means specifically for your situation, gives you an estimated timeline, explains what's happening behind the scenes at the IRS, and even tells you what your next steps should be. Saved me from having a complete meltdown when I got a similar freeze code!

OMG I just tried it and this is freaking amazing!! It told me exactly why my refund was delayed and when I should expect it. Literally answered questions I've been stressing about for weeks. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this!

I was in your exact situation back in April - filed in February, got the CP05, had the 810 freeze for months. I got so fed up with waiting that I finally used this calling app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual person at the IRS. Turns out they just needed to verify one piece of information that wasn't even mentioned in their letter! The agent fixed it while I was on the phone and my refund was processed the following week. Best money I've ever spent to finally get some answers instead of waiting endlessly.

How does that even work? I've tried calling the IRS like 20 times and always get the 'call volume too high' message 🤬

It basically navigates all the phone menus for you and holds your place in line. When they get an agent, they call you and connect you. I was skeptical but desperate after waiting 4 months. Got connected to an agent in about 2 hours without having to sit on hold myself.

100% worked for me. My friend recommended it after she used it to resolve an identity verification issue. Talking to a real human at the IRS was what finally got my refund moving after being stuck for months.

The IRS is a JOKE this year. I've been waiting 7 months for my refund with the same codes. Called them 4 times and get a different answer every time. Last agent told me they're "just backed up" and I should keep waiting. Cool, thanks for the $5000 interest-free loan I gave you guys 🙄

At least they pay interest on delayed refunds! Not much but better than nothing

Ugh, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. The 810 code is the worst because it can mean so many different things. In my case, it was because someone had tried to file fraudulently using my info before I filed. Took 9 months to resolve. Check your wage and income transcript if you can - make sure everything reported matches what you filed. Sometimes employers report things incorrectly and that triggers a review.

I can tell you EXACTLY what's happening because I went through this nightmare last year. The 810 freeze with a CP05 letter means they're reviewing your withholdings, income, or credits. Most likely scenarios: 1. You claimed EITC or Child Tax Credit and they're verifying eligibility 2. Your W2 withholding doesn't match what employers reported 3. You claimed a large deduction they want to verify 4. Random selection for review (yes they do this) It's totally normal but frustrating. My advice - call the IRS directly using the Taxpayer Advocate Service number (different than regular IRS). They can often give you more info than the regular agents.

Thanks! I did claim Child Tax Credit for the first time this year, so maybe that's why. Do you remember how long your review took before they released your refund?

Mine took about 4 months total. You're already at 5 months so hopefully it's almost done! If you claimed CTC that's very likely the trigger. They scrutinize those claims heavily.

check your wage and income transcript. If you see any 1099s or W2s that aren't yours, that could be the reason for the freeze. Had this happen to me - someone used my SSN for a job in another state. Took forever to clear up but once I identified the problem, it moved quickly.

I had an 810 freeze that lasted FOR.EV.ER. 🙄 Finally got desperate enough to check out taxr.ai and it was able to explain exactly what was happening with my account. Turns out there was a discrepancy with my reported health insurance premium tax credit that triggered the review. Highly recommend if you want to understand what's actually happening beyond just seeing mysterious codes. https://taxr.ai

honestly it's worth whatever they charge just for the peace of mind. I was losing sleep over my refund situation and it was such a relief to actually understand what was happening instead of guessing.

This happened to me last year. I waited 6 months with no updates, then finally broke down and called the IRS using claimyr.com because i could NOT get through on my own. The agent told me they needed verification of my identity which was never communicated to me in any letter! After verifying, i got my refund 3 weeks later. Such a waste of time. Try calling, they might be waiting on something from you and just never told you.

That's the thing - how would I know if they need something if they never tell me? The letter just said to wait.

Exactly! That's why you should call. Their communication is terrible. My letter also said just wait, but turns out they were waiting on ME the whole time.

did u check your return transcript as well as account transcript? sometimes there will be error codes on the return transcript that give you more info about why its being reviewed. for me last yr it was error code 0012 which meant they were reviewing my W2 withholding amounts

I didn't check that one actually. I'll try to look at it today. Thanks for the tip!

Honestly I've given up trying to understand the IRS codes myself. I just plug my transcript into taxr.ai now and it tells me exactly what's happening and what to expect next. So much better than trying to decipher these stupid codes on my own or waiting hours on hold just to talk to someone who doesn't know much more than you do.

Contact your congressional representative! No joke, I had a freeze for 8 months, called my congressman's office, and they have staff specifically for dealing with IRS issues. My freeze was lifted two weeks after they inquired on my behalf.

The IRS is purposely underfunded so they cannot provide adequate service. Its all political BS. They want u to hate government agencies so they can justify cutting them more. Meanwhile the rich get away with tax evasion because the IRS doesnt have resources to go after them, so they target regular folks like us instead. The whole system is corrupt af

its not a conspiracy when its literally public record. look up the IRS budget cuts over last 10 years and their audit rates for wealthy vs middle class. do your research before calling someone a conspiracy theorist

If they sent you a CP05, make sure you read it carefully. Sometimes they ask for documentation but it's buried in the letter. I missed it and waited 6 months before realizing I needed to send in copies of my W2s. Once I did that, I got my refund 3 weeks later.

Definitely going to reread the letter tonight. I thought it just said to wait, but maybe I missed something important.

I had the EXACT same situation with the same codes. Used Claimyr to reach an agent (claimyr.com) after trying for WEEKS to get through the normal way. Found out they had a question about my child tax credit eligibility but never sent me the follow-up letter requesting documentation! Once I faxed in what they needed, refund was released in 3 weeks. My advice - don't wait for them to figure it out, be proactive and call.

Hey, tax professional here. The 810 and 971 combo usually indicates one of two things: 1. Income verification - they're matching what you reported against what they received from employers/financial institutions 2. Credit verification - especially for refundable credits like EITC, CTC, etc. Most of these resolve automatically when the review is complete, but they're severely backlogged right now. If it's been over 120 days since you received the CP05, you should definitely call. Otherwise, keep checking your transcript weekly for updates.

-

Paolo Rizzo

It's been about 45 days since I got the CP05. Should I wait the full 120 days before calling?

0 coins

-

21d

Andre Lefebvre

I'd give it at least 60 days from when you received the CP05 before calling, unless you notice new codes appearing on your transcript. The current IRS backlog is significant, so reviews are taking longer than usual.

Another possibility no one has mentioned - identity verification. Sometimes they freeze returns until they can verify your identity. Check if you can verify online through ID.me on the IRS site. If not eligible for online verification, you'll need to call or visit an office.

Went thru this hell last year and wasted MONTHS trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. Finally used taxr.ai and it was a complete game changer - explained every code on my transcript, what the IRS was doing with my return, and even predicted when I'd get my refund (it was accurate within 3 days!). Seriously worth checking out if you're stuck in IRS limbo like I was. https://taxr.ai

Try calling early in the morning right when they open - like 7:01am eastern. That's when I finally got through after weeks of trying. Found out they were just waiting on verification of my self-employment income. Never would have known without actually speaking to someone.

I finally gave up on calling directly and used claimyr.com - got through to an agent who actually knew what they were talking about. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after months of waiting.
