Filed early February but got 810 freeze code in March - no letters and 'as of date' keeps changing

Submitted my return on 2/5, got accepted 2/10. Just checked my transcript today and noticed an 810 freeze code appeared on 3/17. Haven't received any letters or notices from the IRS, and the only thing that's changed on my transcript is the 'as of date' which keeps moving. I've tried reaching out to my tax preparer multiple times but they're not getting back to me. My refund was supposed to be around $3,700 and I really need this money. What does this 810 code mean and what should I do next? I'm completely lost.

Harper Collins

The 810 code is a freeze on your account, which means the IRS is reviewing your return. This could be for various reasons - identity verification, income verification, or they need additional documentation. Unfortunately without a notice, it's hard to know exactly what they're looking for. Your options are: 1. Wait for a letter (should arrive within 30 days of the freeze code appearing) 2. Call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 (though good luck getting through) 3. Create an ID.me account and check if there are any action items in your IRS online account 4. Visit a local Taxpayer Assistance Center (you'll need to schedule an appointment) The changing 'as of date' typically indicates they're still processing your return. This doesn't mean anything is necessarily wrong, but your refund is definitely delayed.

Thanks! do u know how long these freezes usually last? And is there any chance they just release it without sending a letter?

It varies widely - could be a few weeks, could be months. And yes, sometimes they do resolve without sending anything. I've seen cases where the freeze just disappeared after 45-60 days. But don't count on that happening.

my freeze lasted from February till almost June last year. it was hell. eventually they just released it without any notice 🤷‍♀️ never knew why it was frozen in the first place

i had this EXACT same issue last year. same code. they never sent me anything, and they released it randomly after about 8 weeks. no explanation ever given. irs is such a joke.

I went through this same frustration last month. Wasted hours trying to figure out what was happening with my transcript. Finally used taxr.ai and it explained exactly what was happening with my return and the reason for the freeze. Way better than trying to be a detective piecing together random codes and dates. It's insanely good at explaining everything in plain English! I use it whenever anything changes on my transcript now. Check it out at https://taxr.ai - saved me so much stress.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

OMG it's amazing! You upload your transcript and it breaks down EVERYTHING. Explains all the codes, tells you what's happening with your refund, predicts when you'll get paid based on your specific situation, and even suggests actions you should take. I was so confused before using it - now I actually understand what's happening with my taxes!

is it safe tho? like does it store your info or what?

Totally safe! They don't store your docs. I was skeptical at first too but it's been a game changer for me. No more guessing or panic when I see weird codes on my transcript.

After dealing with a similar freeze last year, I finally broke down and used that Claimyr app to get through to an IRS agent. Got connected to a live person within like 30 minutes instead of spending days calling and getting hung up on. The agent explained exactly what was going on with my account and fixed it while I was on the phone. Found it at claimyr.com - talking to a real agent was worth every penny because they released my refund right away.

100% worked for me. Was skeptical but desperate after trying to call for two weeks straight. Got a callback from an actual IRS agent who fixed my issue on the spot. Best money I ever spent to get my $4k refund unstuck.

I tried it too when I had a similar freeze. Got a callback within an hour and the agent resolved my issue. My refund was direct deposited 8 days later.

It's not a miracle, it just holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Way better than being on hold forever or getting disconnected.

The freeze means that the IRS flagged your return for review. Could be because of a mismatched W2, unusual deductions, or something else triggered their system. Sometimes they release them without sending anything, but that's pretty rare. Most likely you'll get a letter in a few weeks asking for documentation or verification. As for the changing "as of" date - that's actually normal and doesn't necessarily mean anything. It's just an internal date that updates when their system touches your account for any reason.

Last month I had an 810 code too, I went to my local IRS office and they told me it was because I had reported income that didn't match what they had on file. Turned out my employer submitted a corrected W2 but didn't tell me. You might want to double check all your documents. Just my 2 cents.

did you have to make an appointment to go to the local office? how long did that take?

Yes, had to call 844-545-5640 to schedule. Took about a week to get an appointment, but the actual visit was quick - maybe 30 minutes. Bring ID and all your tax docs.

dont waste ur time waiting, just call them. I had the same thing happen and waited for 2 months for a letter that never came. when i finally got through to the IRS they said it was just a random review and they cleared it on the spot. my money was in my account 5 days later.

not gonna lie I used that calling service claimyr.com after my friend recommended it. I was desperate after trying for weeks. got a call back with an agent in like 45 mins.

This. Call them. I had the exact same situation and the IRS rep told me they pulled my return for 'random review' but there was nothing actually wrong with it.

my sister had this happen last year and it turned out to be identity verification. check if they need you to verify your identity at https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification-for-irs-letter-recipients

Your tax preparer is ghosting you because they probably know they messed something up lol. I'm saying this as someone who did tax prep for 5 years. If everything was fine, they'd be responding to tell you it's just a normal delay. The fact they're ignoring you is a red flag.

☝️ This right here. My preparer did the same thing when they forgot to report some of my income. Find a new preparer for next year.

Pull your wage and income transcript from the IRS website and compare it to what's on your tax return. Look for any discrepancies. That'll usually tell you what triggered the review.

I know it sucks but be patient. These freezes typically take 8-12 weeks to resolve. Last year they froze mine, never sent a letter, and then one day the money just showed up in my bank account. The IRS is operating with prehistoric technology and not enough staff.

The 810 freeze is bullshit, man. I had it las year and had to wait THREE FUCKIN MONTHS for my money. no reason given, no letter, nothing. just the irs being the irs. welcome to the club no one wants to be in 🤡

same, they held mine for 4 months for absolutely no reason. then just released it randomly. irs is so broken its not even funny

to be fair they do pay interest if they hold your refund too long. i got an extra $42 when they finally released mine 💅

If you check the IRS processing delays page (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue) they're running behind on everything this year. even if you filed electronically, they're taking 4-6 weeks minimum to process returns with any complexities at all. wouldnt worry just yet.

Just a heads up - I'm a tax professional and the 810 freeze is happening A LOT this year, more than I've ever seen. The IRS is doing extra verification because of all the fraud last year. Almost everyone is getting through it eventually, but it's taking 6-8 weeks on average.

-

Monique Byrd

Does it matter if you e-filed vs paper filed? Or is everyone getting hit with these reviews?

0 coins

-

15d

Alejandro Castro

E-file is definitely better, but I'm seeing freezes on both. Paper returns are taking 6+ months to process, though. E-file is more like 6-8 weeks with a freeze.

Whatever you do DONT AMEND trying to fix it!!! I did that last year thinking something was wrong with my original return and it made everything 10000x worse. Just wait it out or call them directly.

-

Donna Cline

omg i was literally thinking about amending... thank you for the warning!!!

0 coins

-

Happy to help! Yeah amending puts you into a completely different processing queue and can add months to your wait time. Plus they'll freeze both returns while they figure out which one to process.

A lot of people in this thread are giving good advice, but I've been dealing with this exact issue for three weeks and finally tried taxr.ai after seeing someone mention it in another thread. It analyzed my transcript and told me exactly what was causing the freeze (in my case it was a mismatch with some investment income) and predicted my refund release date within days. It was right! Highly recommend checking it out at https://taxr.ai if you're stuck in limbo like I was.

Check your return for these common issues that trigger 810 freezes: - Did you claim Earned Income Credit? - Did you have unemployment income? - Did you have any unusual deductions this year? - Did you file for any pandemic-related credits? - Did you move or change jobs during the tax year? Any of these can trigger extra scrutiny.

I did claim EIC and I changed jobs mid-year... guess that might be why 😕

I feel for you, this system is so broken. I waited 9 months for my refund last year because of a freeze. Ended up having to contact my congressional representative's office to get it fixed. If you're desperate, that's an option - they have caseworkers who can put in inquiries to the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.

had the same issue before and spent weeks trying to figure it out. used claimyr.com to get through to an agent and found out it was something simple they needed to verify. 10/10 would recommend just talking to a human at the IRS instead of trying to decipher the tea leaves. talking to an agent got my refund released in days instead of months.

last month my wife's transcript had an 810 and as of date kept changing every monday. we finally got through to irs after like 25 calls and the rep said it was kicked out for manual review because she had a name change (we got married) but everything matched in the system. they cleared it while on the phone with us.
