IRS put 810 freeze code on my transcript after acceptance, received 12C letter, filed amended return, still showing 810 - what's next?
I e-filed my 2024 tax return on February 10, 2025 and got acceptance confirmation within 24 hours. Everything seemed fine until I checked my transcript on February 16 and saw an 810 code dated February 14. I was confused since I thought my return was processing normally. On February 28, I received a Letter 12C asking for additional information about some income verification. I realize this is probably why the 810 freeze was put on my account. I quickly prepared and e-filed an amended return on March 8 with all the supporting documentation they requested. It's now been almost 3 weeks since I submitted the amended return, but when I check my transcript it's still showing the 810 code from February 14 and nothing else has updated. No indication they've even received my amended return. I'm not sure what to do next. Should I call the IRS? Wait longer? Send in paper documentation? I was really counting on this refund coming through soon.

The 810 code on your transcript means a freeze was placed on your return pending review - this is completely normal after receiving a Letter 12C. The IRS is likely still processing your amended return, but that typically takes 16+ weeks (not 3 weeks). Here's what you should know: • Your original return is basically on hold until the review is complete • The 810 freeze will remain until they make a determination • Amended returns (Form 1040-X) take MUCH longer to process than original returns • The IRS computer systems don't immediately update when you submit an amended return • The lack of new codes doesn't mean they haven't received your amendment I would recommend calling the IRS to confirm they received your amended return. The transcripts may not show it yet, but they can verify receipt in their system. If they haven't received it, you might need to resubmit. Alternatively, you could use taxr.ai to fully analyze your transcript and get a complete explanation of your situation plus recommendations. I've found it much more helpful than trying to piece together transcript codes myself or waiting on hold with the IRS for hours. Be prepared to wait - amended returns with freeze codes can take 20+ weeks to resolve.

thank you for breaking this down! do you think I should wait the full 16 weeks before attempting to call? Also, what's taxr.ai? Never heard of it before

I'd wait at least 8 weeks before calling unless you're facing a financial hardship. If you are, mention that specifically when you call as it can get your case expedited in some situations.

Had to deal w/ this last year. Definitely call now just to confirm they have your amended return on file. The system is so slow to update that you want to make sure they at least received it. Otherwise you're waiting for nothing.

Taxr.ai is this AI tool that reads your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and what to do next. It helped me understand my 570/971 codes when I was completely lost.

Yeah there's a fee but honestly it saved me so much time and stress trying to figure everything out. Like having a tax pro explain everything in seconds instead of spending weeks trying to decode everything myself. Best money I spent during tax season tbh

I was in a similar situation with an 810 code last year and was completely lost trying to understand my transcript. I wasted so much time on reddit and tax forums trying to piece together what was happening with my return. Finally tried taxr.ai and it was a game-changer! The tool analyzed my transcript instantly and gave me a complete breakdown of my situation with actual next steps. Instead of trying to guess what the codes meant or waiting on hold with the IRS for hours, I got clear explanations about what was happening and exactly what I needed to do. For people like us dealing with freeze codes and amended returns, having something that can actually explain what's going on is insanely helpful! https://taxr.ai Trust me, it's way better than posting here hoping someone might know the answer.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It basically reviews your entire transcript and analyzes all the codes/dates together to explain your specific situation. It's like having a tax pro look at your file but instant. After my analysis it told me exactly why my 810 was placed and what documentation I needed to send to resolve it. I was able to get my refund released in about 3 weeks after following the steps it gave me. Saved me from making mistakes that would have delayed things even more!

I thought the same thing initially, but after wasting 2 months trying to figure it out myself and getting nowhere, I was desperate for actual help. The site saved me from making a huge mistake - I was about to file another amended return which would have reset my wait time completely. EVERYONE I know with tax issues now uses it. Changed my whole perspective on dealing with the IRS.

After dealing with a similar 810 freeze last year, I finally found a way to actually reach an IRS agent who could help. I used the Claimyr phone service (claimyr.com) and got connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold for 3+ hours or getting disconnected. The agent was able to see exactly what was happening with my return, confirm they had received my amended return (even though transcript didn't show it), and tell me exactly what to expect next. Seriously, getting to talk to a real person at the IRS made all the difference - they cleared up my confusion and gave me peace of mind about the timeline. Talking directly to someone who could see my file saved me weeks of anxiety and wondering.

Is this one of those services that charges you just to call the IRS? Why would anyone pay for that?

Have you tried calling the IRS lately? It's nearly impossible to get through. I spent 5 days trying to reach someone - either got disconnected after hours on hold or told call volumes were too high. The calling service was worth every penny because I finally got my questions answered instead of stressing for another month. The agent I spoke with found issues with my account I wouldn't have known about otherwise.

It definitely works. I was skeptical too but after my third failed attempt calling directly I gave it a shot. They had a system that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Talking to a real person who could actually see my file and explain what was happening was 100% worth it. My refund was released the following week after the agent removed a manual review flag that I didn't even know was on my account.

Dont waste ur time with amended returns. I did the same thing as you last year and my amended return just sat there for 8 months with no movement. Finally just called and it turned out they needed verification documents that I could have sent directly instead of amending. the 810 code is usually identity verification or income verification, not necessarily something that requires amending your return.

The IRS is such a joke. They can freeze your refund instantly but take months to unfreeze it even after you give them exactly what they ask for. My 810 code lasted 6 months before they finally released my refund. 🤬 The system is designed to make us suffer.

YUP. The freeze codes go on instantly but take an act of God to remove. Criminal how they hold our money hostage.

To be fair, they're incredibly understaffed and working with computer systems from the stone age. The people there are just trying their best with the garbage resources they have.

Don't defend them. They have plenty of resources to take our money but mysteriously not enough to give it back. And don't get me started on the interest they pay us vs what they charge us 😤

810 codes are usually for one of three things: identity verification, income verification, or tax credit verification. Based on the letter 12C, sounds like income verification. Did they specify which income they were questioning in the letter? That's important for how you respond.

The letter mentioned discrepancies with reported income from a 1099-NEC that I received late (after I'd already filed). That's why I amended - to include that 1099.

Ah ok, that makes sense. In that case you did the right thing by amending. Just be aware the 810 freeze won't lift automatically when they receive your amended return - an actual human has to review it and manually release the freeze. That's why it takes so long.

I feel you... 20-somthing days after filing my amended return and no update either. The IRS still living in 1992 with their systems. Like why cant they just send us a text when they receive our documents? why is everything so hard with them smdh

the IRS has a special department for amended returns with freeze codes and theyre SUPER backed up. try calling the tax advocate service (different number than regular IRS) and see if they can help you. they sometimes can expedite if youre facing hardship

Tax advocate service is basically useless now. They won't even take your case unless you can prove severe hardship (like eviction notice, utility shut-off notice, etc). And even then it's a 6+ month wait to be assigned an advocate.

Have you tried checking your Where's My Amended Return tool on the IRS website? Sometimes that updates before the transcript does. Also be sure you're looking at your Account transcript and not just the Return transcript.

Amara Torres
I've checked both - the Where's My Amended Return tool just says "no information available" and I've been looking at my account transcript which only shows the 810 code from when they froze my original return.

Honestly, at this point you need to call them. I had a similar issue and after weeks of no movement, I finally got through to an agent who told me my amended return wasnt even showing in their system yet. Apparently it sometimes takes 2-3 weeks just for them to digitally receive and enter amended returns into their system. I used claimyr.com to get through on the phone after failing at least 10 times trying to call directly. speaking to a real person was the only way i finally got movement on my account.

Thanks for the tip! Did you get any specific information from the agent that helped move your case along? Like should I ask any particular questions when I call?

yes, ask them specifically if they can see your amended return in their internal system (they can see more than what shows on your transcript). If they can, ask if they see any notes or holds on your account that might be delaying processing. In my case, they saw my amended return was received but was flagged for "manual review" which meant a much longer wait time. Just knowing that helped me plan accordingly.

Check the mail!!! I got an 810 code and then 3 weeks later they sent me another letter asking for more documentation. The transcript never updated to show this new notice was sent. They kept my return in limbo until I responded to that second letter which I almost missed.

This same thign happened to me. My amended return fixed the issue but my transcript didn't update for like 45 days after I sent it... Then suddenly one day everything updated at once and my refund was released. The IRS works in mysterious ways lol. Just hang tight.

I'm dealing with the EXACT same issue right now. Filed 2/2, got 810 code 2/8, received 12C letter 2/24, sent back paperwork 3/1, and still nothing. I was able to use taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it explained that my return is in the income verification department and gave a timeline of when I should expect resolution. Really helped me understand what was happening behind the scenes. Much more detail than I was able to figure out from the transcript codes alone.

Absolutely. I was hesitant at first but was desperate to understand what was happening with my refund. It breaks down everything in your transcript in plain English and gives you a prediction of what will happen next based on your specific situation. Better than waiting on hold for hours just to have an IRS agent tell you "it's still processing" with no real details.

PSA: Everyone keeps saying "call the IRS" but no one mentions how IMPOSSIBLE that is right now. I called 37 times over 3 days and never got through. Either "call volumes too high try again later" or 2+ hour hold times that end with disconnection. The phone system is completely broken.

I finally got through using claimyr.com after trying for weeks on my own. They have some kind of system that holds your place in line. Got a callback when an agent was available. Might be worth it if you're desperate to talk to someone.

If you have a medical hardship, call and ask for a hardship expedite. You'll need documentation but they can move your case to the front of the line.

The harsh reality is that amended returns with freeze codes take forever to process. My best advice is to plan as if you won't get your refund for at least 6 months. If it comes sooner, great! But don't count on that money anytime soon. The IRS is massively backlogged on amended returns.
