2022 amended return shows refund date of 02-24-25 but no deposit received yet. What's going on?

I filed an amended return for my 2022 taxes back in August 2024. After months of checking, my transcript finally updated last week showing a refund date of 02-24-25. It's now March 3rd and I still don't see any money in my account. I've checked my direct deposit info on the amended return and everything is correct. My transcript shows code 846 with the refund amount and that 02-24-25 date, but nothing has hit my bank account. Has anyone else experienced this delay? Should I be concerned or just keep waiting? I called the IRS but couldn't get through to anyone.

The 846 code with a date means your refund is scheduled to be issued on that date. There are a few possibilities for why you haven't received it yet: • If you selected direct deposit, it typically takes 1-5 business days after the refund date for the money to appear in your account • The IRS might have opted to send you a paper check instead (this happens sometimes with amended returns) • There could be an offset where your refund was applied to other outstanding tax debts or government debts (child support, student loans, etc) • Your bank might be holding the deposit for some reason I'd recommend checking the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website as it sometimes gives more updated information than the transcript. Also, if you don't receive anything within 2 weeks of the refund date, then definitely call the IRS again. Amended returns are notorious for having issues with refund delivery.

Thanks for this detailed response. I did check Where's My Refund but it's not showing anything about my amended return. I'll give it until mid-March before trying to call again. This is so frustrating!

Just a quick tip - check Where's My AMENDED Refund tool instead. Regular Where's My Refund doesn't show amended return status.

Oh wow I didn't even know there was a separate tool for amended returns. I'll check that right now, thank you!

This happened to me last year. Mine was sent as a paper check even though I requested direct deposit on my amended return. Showed up about 10 days after the date on transcript.

0 coins

That's good to know! I'll keep an eye on my mailbox too then. Did yours show any indication that it was being mailed instead of direct deposited?

0 coins

Nope! That's the annoying part. Transcript just had the 846 code with date, nothing about mailing vs direct deposit. The IRS works in mysterious ways 🙄

I went through this EXACT situation a few months ago and wasted hours trying to decode my transcript and figure out what was happening. I finally discovered taxr.ai and it was a complete game changer! It analyzed my transcript, explained every code, and told me exactly when to expect my refund. The best part was it predicted I'd get a paper check instead of direct deposit (which is what happened) even though nothing on my transcript indicated that. Saved me so much stress and uncertainty. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It actually interprets all the codes together, can predict future actions the IRS will take, gives you plain English explanations, and tells you what to do next. I was shocked at how accurate it was. Even predicted my exact refund amount when the numbers on my transcript were confusing me. Literally changed my life during tax season!

is this another subscription service? not trying to sign up for something that costs $$$ every month

0 coins

No no, it's not a subscription! You just use it when you need it. And honestly, after spending like 3 days pulling my hair out trying to understand my transcript, I would've paid SO much more. It's insanely good value for the stress it saves you!

I was in your shoes back in January. Amended return, refund date on transcript, no money in sight. After getting nowhere for weeks, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a real IRS agent on the phone within an hour! The agent explained that my refund had been flagged for review, causing the delay. He manually pushed it through while I was on the call. The money hit my account 2 days later. Worth every penny - www.claimyr.com

This sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work? I've been trying to call the IRS for 3 weeks straight.

0 coins

It 100% works. I was skeptical too, but I was so desperate after trying for weeks. The way it works is they basically navigate the IRS phone tree for you and when they get an agent, they call you and connect you. Talking to the agent directly was what finally solved my issue. Best money I ever spent considering how much my refund was.

Sounds sketchy AF. Why not just keep calling yourself?

0 coins

lol have you tried calling the IRS lately? I spent HOURS on hold only to get disconnected. With Claimyr I didn't have to waste my time - they did the waiting and got me through to an actual human being who could help. When it's thousands of dollars on the line, the time saved alone was worth it.

0 coins

I used them too! The agent I spoke with said my refund was going to be a paper check, not direct deposit, so I stopped checking my bank account and got my check in the mail about a week later.

0 coins

Ok here's the deal with amended returns - the IRS almost ALWAYS sends paper checks for these, even if you requested direct deposit. They don't tell you this anywhere obvious. My transcript showed a date of 01-15-25 and I got my check in the mail on 01-24-25. They don't update the WMR tool properly for amended returns either. Just keep an eye on your mailbox.

Give it a few more days. The date on your transcript is usually when they PROCESS the refund, not when it arrives in your account. For direct deposits, add 2-5 business days. For checks, add 7-14 days. If nothing shows up by March 15th, then call the IRS (good luck with that 😅).

I'm hoping it's just taking some extra time to process through. This waiting game is killing me though! 😩

0 coins

Keep in mind those timelines are under NORMAL circumstances... and the IRS hasnt been normal in years 🤣

0 coins

wait why did you amend? i just realized i might need to amend my 2022 return too and im worried about how long it will take

0 coins

I had to amend because I forgot to include some freelance income and a deduction for my home office. Honestly, I filed the amendment in August 2024 and just now seeing movement, so it took about 7 months to process. Definitely not quick!

0 coins

7 MONTHS?!? omg thats insane. thanks for the heads up, i better get on this asap

Just a tip - if you owe money, file the amendment ASAP. If you're due a refund, you have 3 years to amend. The IRS prioritizes amendments where they get paid vs ones where they pay you 🙄

The IRS has been SUPER behind on everything. My refund for my regular (not even amended) 2023 return took an extra 6 weeks beyond the date on my transcript. The system is broken.

0 coins

The whole system is a joke. They expect us to file perfectly and on time or face penalties, but they can take however long they want to send our money back. Make it make sense 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

facts 💯 the double standard is ridiculous

check ur bank account info on the amended return. if even one digit is off, they'll send a paper check instead. also theres a chance u had an offset where they took some of ur refund for other debts.

0 coins

I double-checked and the bank info is definitely correct. I don't have any other debts to the government that I'm aware of. Seems like based on other comments, they might just send a paper check for amended returns regardless.

My amended return refund from 2023 got deposited into a completely random account that wasnt mine! Took me 3 months and multiple calls to get it straightened out. The IRS rep said this happens all the time with amended returns because they process them in a different system that sometimes doesnt carry over direct deposit info correctly.

0 coins

go to https://taxr.ai - they scanned my transcript and explained that my refund was being mailed as a paper check even though the transcript didnt indicate that anywhere. saved me weeks of confusion. best $$ I ever spent because I was able to stop worrying about my bank and just check my mail instead

0 coins

Another vote for taxr.ai here! Used it last week when my transcript made zero sense to me. It explained everything in plain English and even found an error that would have caused further delays if I hadn't addressed it.

If you've got other debt like past due child support, student loans, state taxes, etc., they might have taken your refund to pay those. Check the other codes on your transcript - look for a 898 code which indicates offset.

As someone who worked for the IRS for 12 years (retired now), I can tell you that amended returns almost always get paper checks even if you requested direct deposit. There's a separate processing system for amended returns that doesn't interface properly with the direct deposit system. Check your mail, it's probably on the way.

0 coins

Thank you for this insider info! This makes me feel a lot better. I'll keep an eye on my mailbox over the next week or so.

0 coins

Why doesn't the IRS ever TELL people this?? Would save so much confusion!

0 coins

Great question. The IRS is severely underfunded and understaffed. Updating communications and websites is way down on their priority list compared to just processing returns. It's a shame because better communication would reduce the number of calls they get.

My transcript showed an 846 code with a date of 01/29/25, but I didn't get the check in the mail until 02/13/25... the IRS and USPS are both slow af. Just keep waiting, it'll probably show up.

0 coins

i went thru this EXACT thing. the refund date passed and nothing showed up. i spent HOURS calling different IRS numbers trying to figure out what happened. finally got through using claimyr.com and found out they mailed a check instead of direct deposit. the agent said this is standard for amended returns but its not documented anywhere 🙄 the check showed up like 9 days after the date on my transcript.

0 coins

This seems to be the consensus - that amended returns get paper checks. I'll check out claimyr if I don't see anything in the mail by next week. Thanks!

I'd be very wary about giving any financial info, including transcript access, to any tax advice sites. Make sure they're secure and legit.

FACTS! So many scams during tax season.

Always check for https and verified privacy policies. And NEVER give your SSN to any site other than official IRS pages.

Based on what I'm reading here, it sounds like your refund is probably coming as a paper check instead of direct deposit. The former IRS employee who commented seems to confirm this is standard practice for amended returns - their processing system doesn't interface well with direct deposit. Since your transcript shows the 846 code with 02-24-25, I'd expect the check to arrive sometime this week or next. The USPS can add several more days to delivery. If you don't see anything by March 15th, then definitely try calling or using one of those callback services people mentioned. The waiting is frustrating but it sounds like everything is processing normally on the IRS side.
