Filed Amended Return on 2/27 - Still Not Showing on Transcript
I filed an amended return on February 27th and it's still not showing up on my transcript. I checked again this morning and nothing. Has anyone else filed an amendment recently? How long did it take to appear? I'm wondering if I should call the IRS or just keep waiting. I double-checked all my paperwork before sending it in, but I'm starting to worry something went wrong. Is this normal processing time?

I hate to be the bearer of not-great news, but... amended returns can take quite a while to process. In my experience, it's not unusual for them to take 8-12 weeks just to show up in the system, and that's before actual processing begins. The IRS is still working through a backlog from previous years, so everything is moving slower than the official timelines suggest. I wouldn't start worrying until at least mid-May, honestly.

Thank you for the timeline info! I was getting really anxious about my amended return not showing up yet. At least now I know what to expect with the timeframe.

Quick q - does this apply even if you e-filed the 1040X? I thought electronic amendments were supposed to be faster than paper.

I'm in the same boat. Filed an amended return on 2/15 and it's still not showing up. Here's what I've done so far: 1. Checked Where's My Amended Return tool - nothing 2. Pulled my transcript - nothing 3. Called the IRS general number - couldn't get through 4. Called the amended return specific line - 2+ hour wait time The website says to allow up to 3 weeks for electronic amendments to show up in their system and up to 16 weeks for processing. I'm at week 7 of waiting and still nothing. Has anyone had any success getting through to a person?

After playing the world's worst game of phone tag with the IRS for THREE DAYS (seriously, who designed their phone system? Satan himself?), I finally got smart and used Claimyr. It got me through to an actual human being at the IRS in about 30 minutes instead of the usual "sorry, we're too busy, call back next millennium" response. The agent confirmed my amendment was in the system but just hadn't updated on the transcript yet. Worth the fee just for the peace of mind! Check them out: https://claimyr.com

Most amended returns take 16 weeks minimum. That's the official timeline. Some take longer. Especially this time of year. The IRS is swamped. Your February amendment might not show up until May or June. Be patient. Keep checking weekly, not daily.

I filed an amended return last year and made a critical mistake - I didn't keep copies of EVERYTHING I sent in. When the IRS finally processed it 20 weeks later, they claimed they never received one of my supporting documents and disallowed part of my amendment. I had to start the whole process over again! Now I keep digital AND physical copies of everything, with a detailed cover letter explaining each attachment. Has anyone else had documents "lost" during amendment processing? What did you do?

Did you end up having to refile the entire amendment or were you able to just submit the missing document? I'm wondering what happens if they only have an issue with part of an amendment.

Something similar happened with my state tax amendment. They lost a W-2 somehow and denied the whole thing. It took another 3 months to resolve after I sent in the missing document. The federal process was actually much smoother than my state process, which is the opposite of what I expected!

I appreciate this warning! I just filed an amendment for exactly $4,267 in additional deductions and now I'm going to make sure I have exactly 3 copies of everything stored in different places. Never thought about them losing documents.

I was in this exact situation last month and found a workaround! Instead of waiting for the Where's My Amended Return tool to update, I requested a tax account transcript instead of a return transcript. For some reason, the account transcript showed my amendment was received a full week before it appeared anywhere else. It showed up as a TC 971 code with an amount of $0.00. Might be worth checking if you haven't already! I needed to know ASAP because I was closing on a house and needed to prove my correct income.

My amended return from January 18th just showed up on my transcript yesterday (April 2nd). That's 74 days of waiting just for it to appear in their system. And now the Where's My Amended Return tool says it could take until May 9th to process. The IRS is definitely not moving quickly on amendments this year. At least it's finally in the system though!

The community wisdom on amended returns is pretty consistent: they take forever, and that's when everything goes right. Have you checked if you can view your Record of Account transcript? Sometimes that shows pending amendments before the other transcript types. Also worth noting that if you amended because of an error the IRS might fix automatically (math errors, etc.), they sometimes just adjust your return without processing the amendment at all. Happened to me last year and I waited months before realizing they had already fixed the issue another way.
