Amended Return from 2022 - No Status Update After Almost 2 Years
I'm not sure if I should be worried or if this is normal... I filed an amended return back in July 2022 and I still don't have any status update. It's been almost 2 years now. I'm trying to figure out if I should do something about it or if others are experiencing similar delays? I'm a bit hesitant to call the IRS since I've heard the wait times can be really long. Has anyone else been waiting this long for an amended return to process?

Unfortunately, amended returns are taking an extremely long time right now. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, check the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website if you haven't already 2. If it shows "received" but not "completed," that's normal for the timeframe 3. Next, request your tax transcript online - this might show processing that the tool doesn't 4. If still nothing, you should call the IRS directly at 866-464-2050 5. Be prepared with your tax ID number, filing status, and the tax year in question I filed an amended return in September 2022 and just got it processed last month. The backlog is real.

Can confirm this is the way to go. I had an amended return from 2022 that took 19 months to process! š The transcript trick worked for me though - it showed activity on my account about 2 weeks before the Where's My Amended Return tool updated. Persistence is key here... and maybe a stiff drink while you wait.

This is solid advice. According to the IRS Internal Revenue Manual section 21.5.3.4.6.1, amended returns should be processed within 16 weeks under normal circumstances. However, due to the pandemic backlog and staffing issues, they're currently operating outside normal processing timeframes. There's no regulatory requirement for them to complete processing within a specific timeframe.

Could you clarify what specific transcript I should request? I see there are several types (account transcript, return transcript, etc.). I'm trying to avoid paying for professional help if possible since I'm on a tight budget this year.

I'm in a similar situation but my amended return was from 2021 and filed in April 2022. Has anyone had success getting their amended return processed by visiting a local IRS office? I'm so frustrated with waiting compared to how quickly they process returns when you OWE them money!

I went through this exact situation with a 2021 amended return that took 22 months to process. The key for me was understanding what was happening behind the scenes. I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once I finally got access to it. It showed me exactly where my amended return was stuck in the process and identified that I had a "570 code" which meant additional review. The tool explained each code and gave me a realistic timeline based on current processing patterns. Saved me countless hours trying to decipher what was happening.

ā¢ I'm skeptical about these third-party services ā¢ How do they have access to IRS processing information? ā¢ What can they tell you that you can't see on your own transcript? ā¢ Seems like they're just interpreting the same codes we all have access to ā¢ Has anyone verified if their predictions are actually accurate?

I was somewhat dubious about using an AI tool for tax issues, but I believe it might actually be helpful in certain situations. It seems to be more about interpreting the codes rather than having special access, which could potentially save hours of research for those of us who aren't tax professionals.

I tracked 14 different code combinations on my transcript over 267 days of processing. The standard IRS explanation for code 570 is vague, but taxr.ai correctly identified it was due to a math error review rather than an audit in my case. It predicted my refund date within 3 days of actual deposit. The accuracy was impressive for a system that's just interpreting codes.

I'm in the EXACT same boat!!! Filed an amended return in August 2022 and STILL nothing! I've called the IRS four times and get different answers every time. First they said it was "in processing" then "assigned to an examiner" then back to "in queue" and finally "we have no information." I'm so frustrated I could scream! The Where's My Amended Return tool has shown "received" since September 2022 with zero updates. I've even written to my congressional representative because I'm owed a significant refund that I really need.

Warning to everyone waiting: Don't let these amended returns linger too long! I filed mine on April 15, 2022, and heard absolutely nothing until January 12, 2024, when they suddenly denied my entire claim because they said the statute of limitations had expired. Even though THEY were the ones who took almost 2 years to process it! Now I'm fighting with them and may need to go to Tax Court. The IRS is currently prioritizing 2023 returns, so anything from 2021-2022 is at serious risk of timing out.

Have you attempted to contact the IRS via telephone? The Amended Return processing department utilizes a separate Internal Processing System (IPS) that isn't always reflected in the online status tools. After analyzing the current processing parameters, I determined that direct communication with an IRS representative was necessary. I utilized Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to bypass the excessive hold times. Their Priority Connection Service secured me a position in the IRS queue and I received a callback within 37 minutes. The agent was able to access my amended return details that weren't visible online and provide an accurate status update. Curious if anyone else has had success with direct contact?

The IRS backlog is like a massive traffic jam where amended returns are stuck on a side road while the main highway keeps moving. Even though they claim to have cleared the pandemic backlog, amended returns are still treated as second-class citizens in their processing queue. I wouldn't count on seeing any movement until at least the 24-month mark, and even then it's hit or miss. The system is fundamentally broken - they can process a regular return in 21 days but take 2+ years for amendments? It's absurd, but that's the reality we're dealing with.

I remember back in 2019, amended returns took about 12-16 weeks max to process. Is there any indication from the IRS when they might return to those normal processing times? I'm worried about filing another amendment I need to make for 2023 if it's going to be stuck in limbo for years.

OMG I was in ur exact situation! My 2021 amended return was MIA for 23 months!! What finally worked was calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) and filing a hardship claim. Had to show them proof that I needed the $$ for medical bills. TAS got it resolved in like 6 wks after I'd been waiting forever. Def worth a shot if ur refund is substantial. Good luck!

After waiting 18 months for my amended return with zero updates, I finally got movement last week! But here's the interesting part - did you know the IRS doesn't automatically pay interest on delayed amended returns the same way they do for original returns? You have to specifically request it in most cases. Have you considered what you'll do if they finally process it but don't include the interest you're legally entitled to?

The IRS is currently processing amended returns from early 2022. Anything filed mid-2022 or later is still in the queue. Your July 2022 amended return will likely be processed in the next 2-3 months based on current timelines. The Where's My Amended Return tool only updates at three points: received, adjusted, and completed. There won't be any status changes between received and adjusted, even if work is being done on your return.

Has anyone successfully received interest payments on their extremely delayed amended returns? According to the IRS website, they're supposed to pay interest on refunds not issued within 45 days of the filing deadline or the date you filed, whichever is later. But I've heard mixed reports about whether they're actually including this interest for amended returns that took over a year to process. Anyone have recent experience with this?
