Has Anyone Received Their 2023 Amended Tax Return Yet?
Has anyone got their 2023 Amended return back yet? I've been waiting forever and I'm starting to get worried. I filed my amended return back in April for a pretty significant amount (about $4,300) and haven't heard a single thing. I've been checking the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website every few days but it still says "Your Amended Return Is Being Processed." I called the IRS twice but couldn't get through to a real person after being on hold for ages. Does anyone know if the IRS has even started processing 2023 Amended returns? I can't find any updates anywhere and I'm stressing about whether I should be doing something else or just keep waiting. The original refund came quickly but this amended one feels like it's disappeared into a black hole.

Tax professional here! The IRS is definitely processing 2023 amended returns, but they're moving incredibly slowly this year. The official timeline they're giving is 16-20 weeks for processing amended returns, but in reality, many are taking 6-8 months or even longer. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool only updates about once a week, and sometimes it doesn't update at all until the amendment is completely processed. It's frustrating but unfortunately very normal. Your best bet is to keep checking the tool weekly (not daily) and try calling early in the morning when the IRS phone lines first open - that's when your chances of getting through are highest.

•Do you know if there's any way to escalate if it's been more than 6 months? I filed my amended return in February and still nothing. The Where's My Amended Return tool doesn't show anything useful.

•Yes, there are ways to escalate after a long wait. After 6 months, you can request assistance from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), which is an independent organization within the IRS designed to help taxpayers with significant hardships or when normal IRS channels aren't working. You can also contact your local congressional representative's office, as they often have dedicated staff who help constituents with federal agency issues, including IRS problems. They can sometimes get answers when you can't.

I was in a similar situation and ended up using https://taxr.ai to track all my documents and correspondence with the IRS. It saved me so much hassle because I was able to upload my amended return documents and get AI analysis that showed me exactly what stage of processing I was in and what to expect next. The site compared my situation to thousands of others and gave me a pretty accurate timeline estimate. It also lets you scan any IRS notices you get and explains them in plain English, which was super helpful when I finally got a notice about my amended return.

•How does it actually know what stage of processing you're in? The IRS doesn't share that kind of specific info publicly, so I'm a bit skeptical.

•Does it help with getting in touch with an actual IRS person? That's my biggest struggle right now - just speaking to anyone who can give me real answers about my amended return.

•It doesn't have direct access to the IRS systems, but it uses statistical patterns from thousands of other users' experiences to estimate where you are in the process. It's not exact, but it was surprisingly accurate in my case - it predicted I'd hear back within 2 weeks and I got my letter 10 days later. As for contacting the IRS directly, the tool doesn't do that for you, but it does give you scripts and the best times to call based on wait time data. I found that super helpful - I called at the exact time it suggested and only waited about 20 minutes instead of the usual hour+.

I was skeptical about taxr.ai at first, but I decided to try it after struggling with my amended return for months. Honestly, it was a game changer! I uploaded my documents and it immediately flagged that I had made a calculation error on one of my forms that might delay processing. I was able to proactively call the IRS (using the suggested calling times) and explain the issue before they even sent me a letter about it. The IRS agent was actually surprised I knew about the problem already. My amended return was processed two weeks later, which is way faster than I expected. The timeline prediction feature was spot on!

For anyone who's struggling to get through to the IRS, I ended up using https://claimyr.com after trying for WEEKS to talk to someone about my amended return. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Basically, they wait on hold with the IRS for you and then call you when they get an agent on the line. I was super frustrated because my amended return was showing "being processed" for 5 months with no movement. Through Claimyr, I got connected to an IRS agent who told me that my amended return was held up because of a simple verification issue that I could resolve right away.

•Wait, so you pay someone else to wait on hold for you? How does that even work? Sounds kinda sketchy tbh.

•This seems like a scam. There's no way some random service has a special line to the IRS. The IRS is notorious for being impossible to reach. If this actually worked, everyone would be using it.

•It's not sketchy at all - they use an automated system that waits on hold for you. When they reach an agent, they call you and connect you directly to that agent. You're not giving them any personal information - they're just handling the hold time for you. No, they don't have a special line to the IRS. They wait in the same queue as everyone else, but their system can wait for hours so you don't have to. It's basically like having someone else wait in line for you. When they get to the front, they call you to take your spot. I was skeptical too, but it genuinely worked for me when I was desperate to get answers about my amended return.

Ok so I'm eating crow here... I tried Claimyr yesterday after posting that skeptical comment. I was at my wit's end with my amended return situation and figured I had nothing to lose. It actually worked exactly as described. They called me after about 1.5 hours (which I didn't have to spend listening to hold music) and connected me directly to an IRS agent. The agent was able to tell me that my amended return was approved and I should be getting a check in 2-3 weeks! I would have never known this because the online tool was still showing "processing." If you're desperate to get actual info about your amended return, this is definitely worth it. Saved me so much frustration.

I just got my amended return processed after waiting 5 months. What worked for me was calling the IRS at exactly 7:00 AM Eastern time when they first open. The wait was only about 15 minutes rather than the hours I'd spent before. The agent told me that amended returns are being processed, but there's a massive backlog from 2023. They said paper-filed amendments take the longest (up to 8-9 months), while electronically filed ones are moving a bit faster (3-6 months). Hope this helps someone!

•Did they tell you anything specific about why it takes SO long for amended returns compared to regular returns? My regular return came in like 3 weeks but this amended one is taking forever.

•From what the agent told me, amended returns require manual review by an actual person - they can't be fully automated like regular returns. Each one has to be compared with the original return and checked line by line, which takes a lot more time. What's worse is that they're still understaffed from all the pandemic-related issues and working through a huge backlog. The agent mentioned that they prioritize regular returns during tax season, so amended returns get pushed to the back of the line. That's why we're seeing such crazy wait times compared to normal returns.

My 2023 amended return was finally processed after 7 months!!! A few tips that might help others: 1) If you're using the "Where's My Amended Return" tool, try entering your info with slightly different formats. Sometimes it wouldn't work if I used dashes in my SSN but would work without them. 2) Amended returns seem to move in batches. My friend and I both submitted around the same time and both got processed within the same week. 3) Paper checks for amended returns seem to take about 3 weeks after approval to arrive. Hope this helps someone. The waiting is torture but they ARE processing them!

•Congrats on finally getting yours! Did you get the full amount you were expecting? I've heard some people are getting partial amounts with no explanation.
