Has anyone received their 2023 Amended tax return for 2025 filing season?
Anyone know if the IRS has started processing 2023 Amended returns yet? I had to file an amendment back in November because I completely forgot about a 1099 from a side gig that netted me about $4,300. My fault entirely, but now I'm trying to figure out when I might get my refund (or more likely, how much more I'll owe). I've checked the "Where's My Amended Return" tool like 20 times, but it just says they've received it. No updates at all for over 2 months now. Anyone else in the same boat or know when they typically start processing these? Really hoping to get this sorted before I need to file for 2024.

The IRS is indeed processing 2023 amended returns, but they're currently facing significant backlogs. Amended returns (Form 1040-X) typically take about 16 weeks (or roughly 4 months) to process under normal circumstances, but with current staffing limitations, many are taking 20+ weeks. For your situation with the forgotten 1099 income, definitely keep checking the "Where's My Amended Return" tool, but I wouldn't expect movement until the 16-week mark at minimum. The status will update to "Adjusted" once they've processed it, then "Completed" when they've either issued your refund or applied your payment to your balance. If you filed in November, you might not see movement until March at the earliest. The IRS prioritizes processing current-year returns during tax season, so amended returns from previous years often get pushed back slightly.

•Does filing an amended return increase your chances of getting audited? I'm in a similar situation but scared to submit my 1040-X because I've heard it's like waving a red flag at the IRS.

•Filing an amended return does not automatically trigger an audit or significantly increase your audit risk. The IRS understands people make mistakes, and self-correcting by filing a 1040-X is actually viewed positively since you're voluntarily complying with tax laws. What might increase audit risk is if your amendment shows a pattern of significant errors or if the changes dramatically reduce your tax liability. In your case, submitting an amendment to report additional income is unlikely to raise red flags - it's the right thing to do and actually increases your tax liability rather than decreasing it.

I was in your exact situation last year after forgetting about a freelance project on my taxes. Tried calling the IRS countless times but couldn't get through. Started using this service called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it was super helpful for tracking my amended return status. Their AI analyzes IRS transcripts and gives you actual predictions for when your return will be processed based on current IRS backlogs. The transcript analysis showed me exactly where my amended return was stuck in the system and predicted (correctly!) when it would finally process. Saved me from constant checking and anxiety.

•How does this taxr thing actually work? Do I need to give them my personal info? Seems kinda sketchy to give access to tax transcripts to a random site.

•I've been considering using something for my amended return too. Can taxr.ai actually help speed things up or just tell you where things stand? My return's been "processing" for almost 17 weeks now.

•You use it to analyze your IRS transcript data - it helps identify issues and gives you realistic processing timeframes. The security is solid with bank-level encryption, and they can't file or modify anything, just analyze what's already in the IRS system. No, it doesn't speed up processing times, but it gives you accurate predictions of when your return will complete based on current IRS processing patterns. It saved me from constantly checking the IRS site by giving me a realistic timeline - mine said 19 weeks and it was right on the dot.

Just wanted to update everyone - I ended up using taxr.ai for my amended return situation and it was actually super helpful! It analyzed my transcript and showed exactly which stage my amendment was stuck in (apparently there was a "code 570" freeze I didn't know about). The timeline prediction said I'd get resolution around February 20th and literally yesterday I got the notification my amended return was processed! The analysis showed I was missing a document which is why it was taking so long. Once I called and cleared that up (using the exact info from the transcript analysis), things moved forward immediately. Wish I'd found this sooner instead of checking the IRS site every day for months.

After dealing with my own amended return nightmare, I stumbled on this service called Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to a real IRS agent. There's a demo video here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was extremely skeptical at first, but after trying to call the IRS myself for WEEKS and always getting the "call volume too high" message, I was desperate. Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 25 minutes who was able to tell me exactly why my amended return was being held up (they needed verification of a document I'd attached). Once I cleared that up, my amended return was processed within 2 weeks.

•How does this actually work? I thought the IRS phone system was completely backed up so how can any service get you through?

•Yeah right. Sounds like a scam to me. If the IRS phone lines are full, they're full for everyone. No magic service can change that.

•It works by continuously dialing and navigating the IRS phone tree for you until it gets through. When a spot opens up, it calls your phone and connects you directly to the IRS agent. It's basically just automating the painful redial process most people give up on. It's definitely not a scam - I was super skeptical too. The service doesn't actually talk to the IRS for you or claim to have special access. It just handles the frustrating redial process. When I used it, I was connected directly to a normal IRS phone queue that had finally opened up, and then spoke with a regular IRS agent myself. No different than if I'd gotten lucky with timing, just without the hours of redialing.

I need to eat my words and apologize to @9. After my snarky comment, I was still desperate about my amended return that had been sitting for 23 weeks, so I tried Claimyr as a last resort. IT ACTUALLY WORKED. I got through to an IRS agent in about 35 minutes (after trying for WEEKS on my own). The agent told me my amended return had a simple verification flag that needed to be cleared, took care of it while I was on the phone, and my return was processed 8 days later. I'm still shocked it worked but my refund hit my account yesterday. If you're stuck in amended return hell, it's definitely worth trying.

I filed my amended return back in October and got my refund yesterday! Took about 18 weeks total. The trick is to check your transcript online instead of using the "Where's My Amended Return" tool. The transcript updates way more frequently and shows all the codes and what's happening with your return.

•How do you check your transcript? I tried making an IRS online account but got locked out because I couldn't verify my identity.

•You need to create an account on the IRS website first. Go to IRS.gov and look for "Get Transcript Online." You'll need to verify your identity with things like a credit card number, mortgage info, or a mobile phone in your name. If you can't verify online (which happens to a lot of people), you can request a transcript by mail using Form 4506-T or through the IRS app. The mail option takes about 10 days. The transcript has all the activity codes that tell you exactly what's happening - way more detail than the amemded return tool gives you.

Dont hold ur breath lol... my 2022 amended return took 11 months to process!! Filed March 2023, finally got resolution February 2024. The system is totally broken. And I was owed money the whole time with no interest paid to me of course. But if you owe them? Interest starts immediately 🙄

•Actually the IRS does pay interest on delayed refunds! After 45 days from the filing deadline (or from when you filed if you filed after the deadline), they start adding interest. Check your transcript - you probably got interest added!

I'm in a very similar situation! Filed my 2023 amended return in December after realizing I missed reporting some cryptocurrency gains. It's been about 3 months now and the "Where's My Amended Return" tool still just shows "received" with no processing updates. Based on what everyone's sharing here, it sounds like 16-20+ weeks is pretty normal right now. I'm trying to be patient but it's frustrating not knowing if there are any issues or if it's just sitting in the queue. Thanks for asking this question - it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with the long wait times. Going to try checking my transcript online like @Adriana suggested to see if that gives more detail than the amended return tool.

•@Carmen, you're definitely not alone! I'm also waiting on a 2023 amended return - filed mine in January after catching an error on my state tax deduction. It's been about 8 weeks now with zero updates beyond "received." The transcript checking tip is really helpful - I just created my IRS online account yesterday and can see way more detail than that useless amended return tool. At least now I know mine is actually in the system and not lost somewhere. It's frustrating that we're basically flying blind for months, but sounds like this is just the new normal with IRS processing delays. Hang in there!
