Has anyone received an amended return update for 2023 taxes filed in February?

Hey tax people! I'm going a bit crazy waiting on my amended return from 2023. I submitted it back in February (on the 12th to be exact) and I haven't heard a single peep from the IRS since then. I know they say it can take up to 16 weeks for processing, but I'm getting antsy since I've seen a couple posts on here from people who filed around the same time and already got their money. There was someone who mentioned filing on like the 14th or 16th of February and they already received their amended return last month! Has anyone else filed an amended return around February? Any updates or timeline info would be super helpful. I'm checking "Where's My Amended Return" tool like 5 times a day and it's still showing as received but not processed. Starting to drive me nuts!

I worked for a tax firm for several years and can tell you that amended returns are incredibly inconsistent with processing times. While the IRS officially states up to 16 weeks, I've seen them take anywhere from 4 weeks to 8+ months depending on the complexity and current IRS backlog. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool is notoriously unreliable - it often doesn't update until days after your return has actually been processed or your refund has been issued. The person who filed a few days after you and already received their refund likely had a very simple amendment that didn't require additional review. If your amendment involved more complex issues like changing filing status, adjusting credits, or correcting income from multiple sources, it will take longer to process than someone who just fixed a math error or added a forgotten form.

Does calling the IRS help speed things up at all? I'm in a similar boat with my amended return from January still showing as "received" and nothing else.

Calling the IRS typically won't speed up processing. The representatives you reach by phone generally have the same information that's available on the "Where's My Amended Return" tool and limited ability to expedite your return. If you've passed the 16-week mark, then a call might be worthwhile as they can verify if there are any specific issues holding up your return that wouldn't show online. For returns still within that window, calling usually just results in being told to continue waiting.

I was in exactly your situation last year and discovered taxr.ai after weeks of frustration. I had filed an amended return to correct my retirement contributions and was getting nowhere with the IRS website tools. I uploaded my documents to https://taxr.ai and their system analyzed my amendment status beyond what the IRS tool was showing. They found my amendment was actually in a "review queue" which explained the delay - something the Where's My Amended Return tool never indicated.

How exactly does this work? Can it really see more than the official IRS tool? Seems too good to be true.

I'm interested but skeptical. Does it actually connect to the IRS systems somehow? I've been waiting 11 weeks for my amended return and the IRS website just says "received.

It uses document analysis technology that can detect patterns in your tax documents and transaction history that might explain delays. It doesn't "hack" into IRS systems, but it analyzes your specific situation against thousands of similar cases to provide insights the basic IRS tool doesn't show. The system identified that my particular type of amendment (involving retirement accounts) typically goes to a specialized review team with a longer queue, which explained my delay. This helped me understand what was happening instead of checking the IRS site every day seeing no progress.

Just wanted to follow up - I tried taxr.ai after posting that skeptical comment. Surprisingly helpful! Uploaded my amended return docs and it identified that my amendment likely got flagged for manual review because I had corrected Schedule C business income. The analysis showed this type of correction typically adds 4-6 weeks to processing time beyond the standard estimate. This explained why others who filed simple amendments around the same time got processed faster. At least now I have a realistic timeframe instead of refreshing the IRS tool constantly. The insights about which IRS processing center was handling my return type were spot on too.

After spending WEEKS trying to get through to the IRS about my amended return (filed in January), I tried https://claimyr.com and it was a game-changer. I was skeptical but desperate - they got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days. The agent confirmed my amended return was approved but stuck in a processing queue. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - basically they navigate the IRS phone system for you and call when an agent is available.

Wait how does this actually work? Do they have some special connection to the IRS? I've been on hold for hours multiple times.

Sounds like a scam. No way they can magically get through when the IRS phone lines are jammed. They probably just keep you on hold the same as everyone else.

They don't have special IRS connections - they use technology to continuously dial and navigate the IRS phone tree, then alert you when they reach a human. It's basically automating the frustrating part of waiting on hold. They only call you when there's an actual agent ready to talk. The IRS doesn't mind this approach because it actually reduces the number of abandoned calls in their system. I was connected within 20 minutes when I had previously waited over 2 hours before giving up. The call itself was just a normal IRS call - I spoke directly with the agent about my amended return.

I hate to admit I was wrong, but I tried Claimyr after posting that skeptical comment. Got connected to an IRS agent in about 25 minutes when I'd previously wasted 3+ hours on multiple days trying myself. The agent confirmed my amended return was actually complete but there was a system issue preventing the Where's My Amended Return tool from updating. They're sending my refund next week - would have been waiting forever if I hadn't gotten through to ask. Definitely worth it just for the peace of mind and actual information instead of the useless online status.

I filed an amended return in February too, and mine just updated to "completed" last week. It took exactly 13 weeks. One thing I learned is that checking the online tool obsessively doesn't help - mine showed no movement for 12 weeks then suddenly jumped to completed. I think they batch process these things.

Did you get any letters or anything before it updated online? I've gotten nothing in the mail and online still just says "received" after 12 weeks. I'm wondering if I should be worried.

I didn't receive any letters or notifications before the online update. It literally went from "received" to "completed" overnight with nothing in between. I checked on a Friday and it still showed only as received, then checked again Monday and suddenly it was completed. The refund check arrived about 10 days after the online status changed. If you're at 12 weeks, you're still within their normal processing window, so I wouldn't worry yet. The IRS is notoriously inconsistent with amended returns.

Has anyone noticed that amended returns involving the Recovery Rebate Credit or Earned Income Credit seem to take way longer? My friend and I both filed amendments in February, but mine had the EIC correction and is still processing while hers was just fixing income reporting and she got her refund weeks ago.

Yes! This is actually a real pattern. The IRS scrutinizes any amendments involving tax credits much more carefully because there's been so much fraud. My tax preparer warned me my EIC amendment would take the full 16 weeks or longer.

I'm in almost the exact same situation! Filed my amended return on February 15th and still showing "received" status with no movement. It's reassuring to hear from others with similar timelines - I was starting to think something went wrong with my filing. Based on what everyone's sharing here, it sounds like 12-16 weeks is pretty normal, especially if there are any credits or complex changes involved. My amendment was for adding a missed 1099-INT, so hopefully that's straightforward enough to process soon. The batching theory makes a lot of sense - probably explains why some people filed days apart but got completely different processing times. Going to try to stop checking the tool daily since it seems like it won't update until everything is completely done anyway. Thanks for posting this question, it's helpful to know we're not alone in the waiting game!

I'm in a very similar situation too! Filed my amended return on February 18th for a missed charitable deduction and it's been radio silence from the IRS since then. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool is basically useless - just shows "received" for the past 10 weeks now. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really helpful. It sounds like the processing times are all over the place depending on what type of changes you made. A missed 1099-INT like yours will probably go through faster than mine since charitable deductions sometimes get extra scrutiny. I've been checking that tool way too often too - probably going to follow your lead and stop the daily checking since it seems like it only updates when everything is completely finished anyway. At least we know we're not the only ones still waiting from February filings!
