Timeline for Amended Return Processing? Filed in June 2023
I'm trying to get a realistic timeline for amended returns. Here's what I've done so far: 1. Filed my amended return on June 18, 2023 2. Checked the Where's My Amended Return tool weekly 3. Still showing as "received" after several months I'm wondering what timeline others have experienced from filing to receiving their refund. The IRS website says 16 weeks but I've heard that's not always accurate. I just graduated and could really use this refund for some moving expenses. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I'm in a similar situation right now. Filed my amended return in April 2023 and still waiting. Have you tried calling the IRS directly? I've heard they can sometimes give you more information than what shows online. Did you file electronically or by mail? Paper returns are taking much longer from what I understand.

OMG I was SO frustrated with my amended return last year!!! I waited FOREVER and couldn't get any real info from the IRS website. I finally tried taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it actually explained what was happening! The site showed me exactly which processing stage my amended return was in and gave me a realistic timeline based on current IRS processing patterns. I was impressed that it could predict almost to the day when my refund would arrive! Totally worth checking out if you're stressed about the wait time.

I went through this exact situation last tax season. Filed an amended return in May 2023 and it took nearly 7 months to process. When I couldn't get answers, I tried calling the IRS directly but kept getting the "high call volume" message and automatic disconnects. Someone on this sub recommended Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an actual agent. It worked surprisingly well - got connected in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent was able to tell me exactly where my amended return was in the process and gave me a much better timeframe than the website.

•I'm not sure about using third-party services to contact the IRS. Couldn't this potentially compromise your information? Has anyone verified if this is actually secure?

•I've used Claimyr several times in previous tax seasons. It doesn't access your personal information at all - it just navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. When an agent picks up, you get connected directly. The IRS phone system is notoriously difficult to navigate, especially during busy periods. In my experience, it saved hours of frustration.

•Wow, I had no idea something like this existed! I spent 3+ hours on hold last month trying to resolve an issue with my amended return. This would have been so helpful! Bookmarking for next time.

Amended returns are in their own special category of IRS processing, aren't they? I filed an amended return in July 2023 and received my refund in February 2024. Almost 7 months. The interesting thing is that the online status never updated - it still showed as "processing" even after I received my refund. Have you considered that your refund might be further along than the system indicates?

•Same thing happened to me! Filed amended return in August 2023, got my refund in March 2024, but the online tracker never updated past "received." The IRS seems to have a completely separate system for amended returns that doesn't communicate well with their online tools. I actually got my refund check in the mail without any warning it was coming.

•My experience contradicts this. • Filed amended return May 2023 • WMAR tool updated correctly at 3 weeks, 8 weeks, and 14 weeks • Received refund exactly when the tool predicted I suspect the inconsistency in tracking depends on: • Why you amended (math error vs. new documentation) • Which service center processes your return • Whether you had other open issues with IRS The system isn't universally broken, but it's definitely inconsistent.

Tbh amended returns are taking FOREVER rn. Filed mine in May '23, got $ in Jan '24. That's ~8 mo! IRS is crazy backlogged still. U might wanna try calling the amended return hotline directly: 866-464-2050. Call early AM (8am EST) for best chance. Avoid Mon/Fri. Tues-Thurs mid-morning = less wait time. GL!

I filed an amended return June 3, 2023. Got my refund January 15, 2024. That's about 7 months. The online tracker never updated. Just got a check in the mail. No notification. No status change. Nothing.

Amended returns are currently experiencing significant processing delays due to IRS resource allocation priorities. The standard 16-week timeframe is technically accurate only for non-complex amendments with no verification requirements. Based on current processing patterns, amended returns filed in June 2023 are typically finalizing between January-March 2024. I recommend requesting a transcript analysis which will show the actual internal status codes, even if WMAR isn't updating.

The WMAR tool is notoriously unreliable for 2023 amended returns. Many taxpayers (myself included) received their refunds while the tool still showed "received" status. If you filed Form 1040-X electronically on June 18, 2023, you should be approaching completion based on current processing timelines. Have you checked if your account transcript shows any TC 971/977 codes? Those indicate amendment processing activity even when WMAR doesn't update.

I'm dealing with a very similar timeline - filed my amended return in late June 2023 as well. From what I've gathered reading through everyone's experiences here, it seems like 7-8 months is becoming the new normal for amended returns, which is frustrating when you're counting on that money. The inconsistency with the WMAR tool is really concerning - it sounds like many people are getting their refunds without any status updates online. I've been checking weekly too and mine still just says "received." One thing I'm wondering - for those who got their refunds after 7+ months, did you receive any notice beforehand or did the check just show up? I'm trying to figure out if I should expect any kind of heads up or if it'll just appear one day. The uncertainty is the worst part of this whole process. Thanks for starting this thread - it's helpful to know others are in the same boat, even though the wait is incredibly frustrating when you need the money for legitimate expenses like moving costs.

•I'm in almost the exact same situation! Filed my amended return on June 22, 2023 (just 4 days after you) and still waiting. Based on what everyone's sharing here, it sounds like we're right in that 7-8 month window where refunds are starting to come through. From what I've read in this thread, it seems like most people didn't get any advance notice - the refund check just showed up in the mail one day while their WMAR status was still stuck on "received." That's both reassuring and nerve-wracking at the same time! I've been debating whether to try calling using that Claimyr service that @Andre Dupont mentioned, but honestly after reading everyone s'experiences, it sounds like we might be close enough to resolution that it s'worth waiting another month or two before taking that step. The waiting game is definitely the hardest part, especially when you have expenses you re'counting on that money for. Hang in there - sounds like we should hopefully see movement soon based on the timeline patterns others have shared!
