Amended Return Filed Feb 26 - Got Refund Notice But No Money Yet
I'm trying to track the progress of my amended return and would appreciate some clarity on the timeline. Here's what's happened so far: 1. Filed my amended return on February 26, 2024 2. Received a notice approximately 3 weeks later (around March 18) stating I would receive my refund within 3 weeks 3. It's now been about 2 weeks since that notice, and I've seen no deposit in my account I've double-checked all my banking information and everything appears correct. I'm concerned because I need to allocate these funds appropriately for my children's summer activities and want to ensure there isn't an issue with processing. Has anyone experienced similar timing with amended returns? What should my next steps be to verify everything is on track?

I went through this exact situation last tax season. My amended return took longer than the notice suggested, but the money did eventually arrive. In my case, I filed an amended return in March 2023, got the notice saying 3 weeks in April, but didn't actually see the money until about 5 weeks after that notice. The IRS systems don't always sync up perfectly between when they approve a refund and when it actually processes through Treasury. One thing that helped me was checking the "Where's My Amended Return" tool rather than the regular WMR tool - they track differently in their system.

According to IRS Publication 17, amended returns can take up to 16 weeks for processing in normal circumstances, potentially longer during peak periods! Have you tried calling the dedicated amended return hotline at the IRS? The timeline here seems concerning given the notice specifically indicated 3 weeks.

Just to clarify some important points about amended returns: ā¢ The "Where's My Amended Return" tool updates weekly (not daily) ā¢ The notice you received is likely a CP21B or similar ā¢ Bank processing can add 1-5 business days after IRS releases funds ā¢ Amended returns follow a completely different processing pipeline than regular returns I'd recommend checking WMAR this weekend since that's when they typically update the system.

I was in the same boat last month and was getting so stressed about when my amended refund would actually hit my account. I needed that money for some urgent bills. What finally helped me was using taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - it showed exactly where my amended return was in the process and predicted my actual deposit date based on the specific codes. It was way more accurate than the IRS's vague "3 weeks" timeline. The tool explained that my return had been approved but was in the final verification queue, which is why there was that extra delay. Saved me so much anxiety knowing exactly what was happening instead of just guessing.

Have you checked your tax transcript online? That's usually more informative than the WMR tool for amended returns. Most people I've seen in the community who received that specific notice got their refunds between 3-5 weeks after the notice, not exactly within the 3 weeks promised. The IRS is running behind schedule this year compared to previous years. What was the specific notice number on the letter they sent you? Different notice codes can indicate different processing paths.

When my amended return was stuck in limbo last month, I tried calling the IRS regular number every day for a week and couldn't get through to anyone. I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual IRS agent in about 30 minutes. They told me my refund was approved but stuck in the final verification step, and they put a note on my account to expedite it. Got my deposit 4 days later. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things moving.

I've heard about this service but wasn't sure if it's worth it. Does it actually work 100% of the time? The IRS phone system said my wait time was 2 hours and 47 minutes exactly when I called yesterday, and I couldn't stay on that long with work meetings.

I'm curious about this too - did you have to provide any personal information to the service? I'm always cautious about sharing tax details with third parties, especially when it comes to something as sensitive as an amended return.

Is this really necessary though? Couldn't you just keep calling the IRS yourself? I wonder if people are just impatient sometimes when dealing with government agencies. That said, if you've already received the notice saying 3 weeks, and it's been 2 weeks since then, maybe giving them another week before taking additional steps would be reasonable?

Here's what you need to do. Check your transcript. Look for code 971. That's your notice. Find code 846. That's your refund date. No 846? Keep waiting. Amended returns take 16-20 weeks typically. The 3-week notice is misleading. IRS is backlogged. Your money is coming. Just not on their timeline. Set up direct deposit alerts. Check your transcript weekly, not daily. Calling rarely helps unless something's actually wrong.

Do you really think checking the transcript is better than the Where's My Amended Return tool? I've been using WMAR for weeks and it still shows "processing" even though I got a similar notice about my refund coming. Tax season... the most wonderful time of the year, am I right? š

I had a somewhat similar experience with my amended return last year. In my case, it appears that the IRS system generated the notice automatically when the amendment was approved, but the actual payment processing typically takes an additional 2-3 weeks, in my experience. It's worth noting that, while frustrating, this delay is generally within normal parameters for amended returns, which tend to follow different timelines than standard returns. If you reach the 6-week mark after receiving the notice without any deposit, then you might want to consider taking more proactive steps to investigate.
