When will my Amended Tax Return be processed? Still waiting on my 2022 amended return
Hey folks! I mailed my 2022 amended tax return back in late January 2024, and I'm getting a bit nervous. I totally understand the IRS has major backlogs and processing delays - I'm not expecting my refund anytime soon. My main concern is whether they even received my paperwork at all! When I check the amendment status online, it says they have no record of receiving anything from me yet. How long should I wait before getting worried that my amendment never made it to them? Is there any way to confirm they actually got my paperwork? Also, I have a question about filing an amended return for my 2020 taxes. I just realized I was eligible for a credit that I never claimed that year. I heard I have until April 2025 to file that amendment, but with the IRS being so backed up, I'm concerned. If I submit it now and the processing time extends beyond April 2025, will I still be eligible for that credit? Any advice or experiences would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!!

The "Where's My Amended Return" tool typically doesn't show anything until the IRS begins processing your return, which can take several weeks just to get into their system. For paper returns filed in January 2024, I wouldn't be concerned about it not showing up in the system until at least 6-8 weeks have passed. If you want confirmation they received it, you should have sent it with USPS certified mail with return receipt. Without that, you'll need to be patient or try contacting the IRS directly (which can be challenging). Regarding your 2020 amended return, you actually have 3 years from the original filing deadline to file an amendment. Since the 2020 tax deadline was May 17, 2021 (it was extended that year), you have until May 17, 2024 to file your amendment. The key date is when you FILE the amendment, not when they process it. As long as you submit it before the deadline, you'll still be eligible for the credit regardless of how long it takes them to process it.

•So if I filed my 2020 taxes on the actual due date in 2021, I'd have until May 17, 2024 to amend? But what if I filed late that year? Is it 3 years from when I actually filed or 3 years from the original deadline?

•It's 3 years from the original filing deadline (which was May 17, 2021 for tax year 2020), not from when you actually filed. So even if you filed late, you still have until May 17, 2024 to submit your amendment. For tax years with regular deadlines (like 2022), it would be 3 years from April 15 of the filing year, so April 15, 2026 would be your deadline to amend 2022 taxes.

I was in a similar situation with my 2022 taxes and amendments. After weeks of nothing showing up on the "Where's My Amended Return" tool, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it was a game-changer. They analyzed my documents and confirmed everything was properly prepared before I even filed. They also have this cool feature that helps track your amendment status by analyzing the IRS transcripts. What I really liked is they explained what's normal vs concerning in terms of wait times. For 2022 amended returns, they showed me most people are waiting 4-6 months right now. They also gave me documentation I could use if I needed to follow up with the IRS directly.

•Does taxr.ai actually speed up the process at all, or is it just giving you more information? Can they tell if the IRS actually received your amendment even when the IRS tool doesn't show anything?

•I'm pretty skeptical about these services... aren't they just checking the same IRS systems that we can access ourselves? How do they have any more info than what the IRS makes public?

•They don't speed up the process itself, but they do analyze your IRS transcript data which can show if your return was received even before the "Where's My Amended Return" tool updates. They helped me spot that my amendment was actually in the system but hadn't reached the stage where it would show up in the public tool yet. As for having more info, they don't just check the same systems - they analyze the actual tax transcript data and can interpret codes and entries that most of us wouldn't understand. They showed me specific transaction codes on my transcript that confirmed my amendment was in the system but still in the queue to be assigned to a processor.

I was skeptical too but decided to try taxr.ai after waiting 3 months with no updates on my amended return. They actually found that my amendment HAD been received, but was sitting in a processing queue that doesn't show up on the regular "Where's My Amended Return" tool. They showed me exactly which IRS transaction codes to look for on my transcript and what they meant. Even better, they pointed out that I had actually made a small error on my amendment that could have caused delays, and they helped me prepare a follow-up letter to the IRS to clarify the issue. The peace of mind was totally worth it, and I finally got my refund about 8 weeks later.

If you're really concerned about whether the IRS received your amendment, trying to call them directly is your best bet - but good luck getting through on their phone lines! After spending DAYS trying to speak with someone about my amended return, I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an IRS agent in about 25 minutes. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The agent confirmed they had received my paperwork even though it wasn't showing up online yet. Apparently there's a huge gap between when they physically receive documents and when they enter them into the system that shows up on the "Where's My Amended Return" tool.

•How does Claimyr work exactly? Do they just call and wait on hold for you? Seems like something I could do myself if I'm patient enough.

•This sounds like a paid service to do something the IRS should be doing properly in the first place. Why should we have to pay extra just to find out if they received our paperwork? The whole system is broken and now companies are profiting from it.

•They use an automated system that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. When an actual IRS agent picks up, you get a call connecting you directly to that agent. So instead of being stuck with your phone on speaker for hours, you can go about your day until they call you. I understand the frustration with having to use workarounds for government services. I felt the same way initially. But after trying for three days to get through on my own, I decided my time was worth more than the principle of not using a service. The peace of mind knowing my amendment was actually received was worth it to me.

I want to follow up on my skeptical comment about Claimyr. I ended up using it yesterday after spending 4 hours on hold and getting disconnected THREE TIMES trying to reach the IRS. Within 35 minutes of using Claimyr, I was talking to a real IRS agent who confirmed my amended return from January was received but sitting in a processing queue. She also told me something important - amendments filed for 2020 tax years are currently being prioritized since they're approaching the deadline. The agent recommended I file my 2020 amendment ASAP since they're putting those at the front of the queue right now. Just wanted to share this info since it sounds like the OP is in a similar situation with a 2020 amendment to file.

Make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING. I sent my amended return in October 2023 and it still hasn't shown up in their system. I called (after many attempts) and they said they have no record of it. Now I have to resend everything and I've probably lost my place in line. Also take photos of the envelope before you mail it with the address clearly visible. The IRS claimed my previous amendment might have been sent to the wrong address, but I had no way to prove where I sent it. Learn from my mistakes!

•Did you send it certified mail the first time? I'm wondering if I should resend mine with tracking to be safe, or if that would just confuse things if they already have the first copy somewhere in their processing pile.

•I didn't use certified mail the first time, which was my big mistake. Definitely send yours certified with return receipt if you're going to resend it. When I called, the IRS agent specifically told me that if I'm going to resend it, I should write "DUPLICATE - ORIGINALLY SENT [DATE]" in big red letters across the top of the 1040-X. This helps prevent confusion if both copies eventually make it into the system. Also include a brief cover letter explaining that you're sending a duplicate because you weren't sure if the original was received.

FYI - I filed an amended return for 2021 last summer and it took exactly 20 weeks to show up on the "Where's My Amended Return" tool, then another 8 weeks to actually get processed. The IRS is saying to allow up to 20 weeks just for processing, but in my experience it took closer to 28 weeks total. Also important: if you're expecting a refund from your 2022 amendment, the IRS is paying interest on delayed refunds (starting 45 days after the filing deadline), so your refund might be slightly larger than expected when it finally arrives!

•Do they pay interest on amended return refunds too? I thought the interest was only on original return refunds that were delayed.

•Yes, they do pay interest on amended return refunds too! The interest calculation is a bit different though. For amended returns, interest is generally calculated from the date you filed the amendment (not the original return) if you're due a refund. The current interest rate the IRS is paying is 7% annually (as of January 2024), which adds up if you're waiting 6+ months for your refund. It's not enough to make the wait worthwhile, but it's a small consolation for the delay.

I'm in almost the exact same boat! Filed my 2022 amended return in February 2024 and still nothing showing up in "Where's My Amended Return." Reading through these comments has been super helpful - sounds like 6-8 weeks before it even shows up in their system is normal. One thing I wanted to add based on what others have shared: if you're planning to file that 2020 amendment, definitely do it ASAP! Based on what @Olivia Evans shared about the IRS agent saying 2020 amendments are being prioritized due to the approaching deadline, it sounds like there might be some advantage to getting it in sooner rather than later. Also, thank you to everyone who shared info about the various services and tools. I've been hesitant to try calling the IRS directly because of the horror stories about wait times, but knowing there are options like Claimyr might give me some peace of mind if I don't see any movement in the next few weeks. The interest payment info from @Christopher Morgan is interesting too - at least there's some compensation for the ridiculous wait times, even if it doesn't make up for the stress of wondering if your paperwork disappeared into the void!

•Welcome to the waiting game club! I'm also dealing with a 2022 amended return that seems to have vanished into thin air. Filed mine in March and still radio silence from the IRS system. Your point about getting that 2020 amendment filed ASAP is spot on - especially after reading about the prioritization. I had no idea they were fast-tracking those due to the deadline approaching. That's actually really valuable intel from @Olivia Evans call' with the IRS agent. I m'curious about one thing though - has anyone tried both the third-party services like (taxr.ai AND) calling through Claimyr to see if they get consistent information? I m'wondering if there s'any discrepancy between what the transcript analysis shows versus what the IRS agents tell you directly. Might be worth comparing notes before investing in multiple services. Also, @Christopher Morgan - thanks for clarifying the interest payment details! I had no idea they paid interest on amended return refunds. At 7% annually, that s actually'not terrible considering current rates. Small silver lining to this bureaucratic nightmare!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this exact situation last year. Filed my 2021 amended return in March 2023 and didn't see ANY movement in the "Where's My Amended Return" tool until almost 10 weeks later. The silence from the IRS system is absolutely nerve-wracking, but it's unfortunately very normal right now. A few things that helped me get through the process: 1. Keep meticulous records - scan everything before you mail it, including the envelope with the postmark if you can 2. If you didn't send it certified mail (like I didn't), don't panic yet. Most returns do eventually make it through, it just takes forever to show up in their system 3. The 6-8 week timeframe mentioned by @Lauren Johnson is pretty accurate in my experience Regarding your 2020 amendment question - definitely get that filed ASAP! The deadline pressure is real, and from what others have shared, it sounds like the IRS is actually prioritizing those right now which could work in your favor. One last tip: when you do eventually see movement on your 2022 amendment, don't expect it to move quickly through the stages. Mine took another 12 weeks after it first appeared in the system to actually get processed. The whole thing was about 5.5 months from filing to refund, but the refund did include interest which was a nice surprise. Hang in there - I know the waiting is brutal when you're not even sure they received your paperwork!
