How long after ID verification call does it take to see any updates?
Called the IRS last week to verify my identity after they sent me a letter about my amended return. The agent said everything checked out and my case was 'released for processing.' But how long is this supposed to take? It's been 7 days and there's still no update on Where's My Amended Return or my transcript. Isn't there supposed to be some kind of acknowledgment by now? Just wondering if I'm going to be waiting another 3 months or what?

This depends on a few factors: • Type of verification completed (full ID verify vs. limited verification) • Current backlog in the verification department • Whether your return has other review flags pending • Time of year (we're in peak season now) I'm concerned you might be looking at additional delays. Have you received any correspondence with a 9001C letter code?

•Just to clarify on this: 1. After ID verification, the IRS typically takes 9 weeks to process amended returns. 2. The system sometimes needs time to update after the verification call. 3. The transcript might not show changes immediately. 4. The "released for processing" status means it's moving forward, but still in the queue. I'm a bit worried that checking WMAR daily might just add to your stress since it updates weekly at best.

•Thanks for this breakdown! I just checked the IRS.gov site and it says amended returns are taking 20+ weeks right now: https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return. That's making me nervous since I need this resolved before the fall semester starts!

After Identity Verification (IDVER) completion, the Integrated Automation Technologies (IAT) system requires 7-10 business days to update your Master File Record (MFR). Since you're dealing with an Amended Return (Form 1040-X), this follows a different processing pipeline than standard returns. The verification acknowledgment typically appears as Transaction Code (TC) 971 with Action Code (AC) 111 on your transcript once processed. I recommend checking your transcript for this specific code rather than relying on WMAR tool.

•Ugh, I went through this EXACT thing in March. Called to verify my identity and then... crickets for like 3 weeks. Nothing updated anywhere. I was checking 5 times a day like some kind of tax return stalker 😂 Finally saw movement after 23 days. The waiting game is torture when you need that money!

•Did you call them back during that waiting period? I verified my identity for an amended return last year and saw nothing for about 2 weeks. Called again and found out they needed additional verification documents they never told me about. Worth checking if there's something else they need from you, don't you think?

•I'm impressed with your knowledge of the specific transaction codes! I spent hours researching these when dealing with my amended return. The TC 971/AC 111 is indeed the verification confirmation code - once you see that, you know they've at least processed your verification.

•I went through this nightmare last year and it took over a month after verification to see any update. Is there any way to know if the agent actually completed everything correctly on their end? The first agent I talked to apparently didn't finish processing my verification even though they said they did.

I used taxr.ai last month. Helped me understand my transcript. Shows exactly what codes mean. Takes the guesswork out. Told me when to expect updates. Worth checking out for amended returns. Gives you a timeline prediction too.

When I completed ID verification for my amended return last year, it took precisely 12 business days before any update appeared on my transcript. The WMAR tool didn't update until 3 days after that. The verification process creates an internal case resolution that must propagate through several IRS systems before becoming visible to taxpayers. For amended returns specifically, the verification acknowledgment appears as a TC 971 code on your account transcript, followed by the resumption of normal processing.

Tbh the IRS phone system is a nightmare rn. I spent 4 hrs trying to reach someone last week. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got thru in like 20 mins. Agent confirmed my ID verify was completed but said amends are taking 16-20 wks to process after verification. Might be worth calling again just to confirm everything's good? Sometimes diff agents give diff info.

I may have some encouraging news to share. After my identity verification call in February, I saw no updates for about two weeks. Then suddenly, everything updated at once and my amended refund was processed within 10 days after that. It seems that sometimes the system works silently in the background, and then all status updates appear simultaneously. Perhaps your case is following a similar pattern?

In my experience, identity verification for amended returns typically results in transcript updates within approximately 10-14 business days, though this can possibly vary depending on current processing volumes. The verification acknowledgment should generally appear as transaction code 971 with a specific action code, which essentially confirms your identity has been successfully verified. It's worth noting that the WMAR tool is somewhat notorious for delayed updates compared to actual processing status.

•Isn't it interesting how the IRS systems don't communicate with each other in real-time? I've handled dozens of these cases professionally, and I've noticed that verification confirmation can appear in internal systems up to 7-10 days before taxpayers see any updates. Have you found that the processing timeframes vary significantly between filing seasons?
