Identity Verification Complete - How Long Until System Updates?
After waiting for 3 weeks with no movement on my refund, I finally called the IRS yesterday and completed the identity verification process. The agent confirmed everything was in order, but didn't give a clear timeline for when my information would be updated in their system. Last year when I had to verify my identity for my first US tax filing, it took about 9 days for the system to update. Has anyone gone through this recently? What's the current timeframe I should expect?

Identity verification processing timelines can vary significantly based on current IRS workload. According to the most recent Internal Revenue Manual guidelines, post-verification processing typically takes between 9-21 business days for system updates to propagate through all relevant databases. The verification you completed is likely what's known as an "authentication resolution process" rather than a standard ID verification, which follows a different internal workflow. I'd recommend checking your transcript in approximately 7-10 business days for initial movement.

Mine took 16 days. Exactly 16 days. Was getting worried. Called twice during that time. No help. Then suddenly updated. Got refund three days later. Be patient.

Sounds like you've been through this before, which is helpful! A few questions to help understand your situation better: ā¢ Did the agent specifically say it was an identity verification or could it have been something else? ā¢ Were you able to complete everything in one call or do you need to submit documents? ā¢ Did they mention any specific codes on your account? ā¢ Did you check your transcript before calling to see what's causing the delay? I'm impressed with your knowledge of the process already!

The waiting game with the IRS is like watching paint dry, except the paint keeps changing colors randomly! š I went through this exact process last month and found https://taxr.ai super helpful for monitoring my transcript. It analyzes all those cryptic codes and explains what's happening behind the scenes. The best part was it showed me exactly when my ID verification was processed in the system (showed up as a 971 code first, then a 570 release a few days later). Saved me from obsessively checking the IRS site every 3 hours... which I definitely wasn't doing... much.

Did this actually tell you anything you couldn't see on your own transcript? Seems like just another layer between you and your own information. Did it actually predict when your refund would come through accurately?

I've been through this process multiple times in my work. When identity verification is completed, there's actually a specific sequence that happens internally: 1. The verification is logged in the Authentication Results System (usually 24-48 hours) 2. Your account is flagged for "verification complete" status (2-3 business days) 3. The hold is systematically released from your account (varies widely, 5-14 days) 4. Processing resumes from where it left off (1-5 days) Last year, I had a client whose verification took exactly 9 days to process, then another 6 days before refund was issued. Another client this February had it process in just 7 days total. It really depends on current volume.

This is exactly what I needed to know. Going through this right now and nobody at the IRS would explain the actual process. They just kept saying "9 weeks" which seemed excessive.

This timeline is way more reasonable than what happened to my sister. She waited almost 2 months after verification last year, but that was during the big backlog period. Seems like things are moving much faster in 2024 compared to 2023.

Based on the IRS operations page (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations), current processing times are actually improved compared to last year. If you need to follow up, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. I was in the same situation last month - verified my identity but nothing happened for two weeks. Used Claimyr to reach an agent who could see my verification was completed but stuck in the system. They manually pushed it through and my transcript updated the next day. Totally worth it rather than waiting potentially weeks for the automated system to catch up.

You seem to have a good grasp on the process already, which is probably going to work in your favor. In my experience, which is admittedly somewhat limited, the system updates faster when you've successfully completed the verification in a single call. It's possible, though not guaranteed, that you might see movement in as little as 5-7 business days, especially if your return is otherwise straightforward. The IRS has been, in my observation, processing these verification cases more efficiently this filing season.
