Verification Timeframe - Filed 2/5, Flagged 2/18, Verified in Person - When to Expect Update?

Those that had to verify identity... how long did it take to see an update after verification? Here's my timeline: 2/5/24: Filed & accepted 2/25/24: Called for update as it was 21 days - I was informed I was flagged on 2/18 for verification; I had no letter in my account. I went to the local IRS office same day and verified my identity in person. The agent told me it could take up to 9 weeks for processing. Anyone have similar experience? How long did it take after verification to see movement? Running a small business means I'm counting on this refund for some equipment purchases I need to make soon.

Been thru this last year. After in-person verification, mine took about 4 weeks to update, then DD hit my acct 8 days later. The whole verification thing is a mess tbh. Seems totally random who gets flagged. FWIW the 9 weeks they quote is worst-case scenario - most ppl I know got updates way faster.

Can you break down what happened after your verification? Did your transcript update first, or did WMR show movement? I'm trying to understand the sequence of events that typically follows verification.

I got flagged in 2022 and it took EXACTLY 6 weeks and 2 days after verification before anything happened. Then suddenly one morning - boom! - deposit in my account with zero warning. No WMR update, no transcript change I could see beforehand. Just money appearing like magic. 😂 Was starting to think I'd have to sell a kidney to make rent that month!

My ID verification experience was much faster than others here. Verified online through ID.me on March 2nd and had my refund deposited on March 19th. The IRS representative mentioned that business income returns (Schedule C) often get flagged for verification as part of their fraud prevention protocols.

Wow, thank you all for sharing these timelines! I've been so stressed about my verification process. It's actually really helpful to see the range of experiences. Makes me feel less alone in this whole mess! 🙏

Did they tell you exactly what triggered the verification flag? And why wouldn't they send you a letter before expecting you to verify? Isn't that standard procedure? I've been following these cases for years and it seems like the IRS is increasingly flagging returns without proper notification, which just creates more backlog when people don't know they need to verify.

I was in a similar situation last year, but my wait was much longer compared to some others here. After verification, I waited nearly 7 weeks before seeing any update. What helped me tremendously during this time was using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it finally appeared. Unlike the basic IRS transcript that just shows codes, taxr.ai explained what each code meant for my specific situation and gave me a realistic timeline based on my verification date. Much better than the generic "up to 9 weeks" the IRS tells everyone. If you're a small business owner like me, you'll appreciate having the detailed breakdown of what's happening with your return.

I had a verification flag on 1/28, verified on 2/4, and just received my refund yesterday (3/21). So that's about 6.5 weeks total after verification. Have you checked your transcript since verifying? Are you seeing any codes like 570 (refund hold) or 971 (notice issued)? Those might indicate whether your verification was successfully processed or if there are additional issues.

I was probably in the exact same boat as you, more or less. Verified in person at an IRS office on February 10th after being flagged. Called the regular IRS number about 15 times over the next 4 weeks and could never get through. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent within like 15 minutes. The agent confirmed my verification was processed successfully on February 28th (which nobody had told me) and that my refund was scheduled for March 8th. Without that call I would have been completely in the dark for another week or two. Definitely worth it if you're trying to plan for business purchases.

I've seen Claimyr mentioned a few times on this sub, but isn't it risky to use a third-party service to connect with the IRS? I'm a bit concerned about privacy issues. Have you looked into whether they record or store any of the call information?

According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.3 (Identity Theft Victim Assistance), once verification is complete, normal processing should resume within 9 weeks. However, per the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, you're entitled to clear information about the status of your return. In my experience, Claimyr is simply a connection service that gets you through the phone tree - they don't participate in the actual IRS conversation. The IRS publishes guidance explicitly stating taxpayers may use third-party services to facilitate contact with their offices.

Had to verify this year too. Took 5 weeks after verification. No updates until suddenly it was approved. Checking daily drove me crazy. WMR never updated correctly. Transcript was more reliable. Still frustrating process.

My verification journey was like waiting for a cake to bake without being able to open the oven door. Verified on Feb 1st, and exactly 32 days later my transcript updated. The refund showed up 6 days after that. The IRS is basically running on computer systems from when disco was popular, so everything takes longer than it should. The 9-week estimate is like when your contractor says the kitchen remodel will take 2 weeks - they're padding the timeline.

Did you get any confirmation number or documentation when you verified in person? Have you tried calling the Identity Verification line directly instead of the main IRS number?
