Verified Identity In-Person at IRS Office - Still No Return Showing in System

Got my identity verified on the 29th (last Thursday). Still no update in the system. My IRS account says they didn't even receive a return yet which is exactly what happened to me in 2022. How long does it take after verification for things to start moving? I went in person on the 29th which was Thursday. Not sharing too many details about my business filing situation, but wondering if anyone else has been through this verification delay recently.

The IRS system is like a massive cargo ship - once you've verified your identity, it still takes time to turn the rudder and get things moving in the right direction. Typically, you're looking at 7-14 business days for the verification to fully process through their systems. Think of it like planting a seed - you've done the important first step, but there's a natural growth period before you see anything sprout above ground. I've seen this happen many times, and while it's frustrating, it's completely normal for the account to show no return yet even after verification. Your in-person visit was a smart move though - much more effective than trying to verify online or by mail.

But shouldn't the IRS database update within 24-48hrs after in-person verification? Their Internal Revenue Manual (IRM) indicates expedited processing for TAC-verified returns. Is there a specific hold code that might be causing this delay?

Thanks for explaining this. Section 6103(a) of the tax code makes it clear the IRS has to follow specific protocols for identity verification. I've heard so many conflicting timelines, but your explanation makes sense given their backlog situation.

I would say this matches my experience as a tax preparer, though the timeframes can vary somewhat. In most cases I've handled, it typically takes about 9-10 business days, give or take, for the system to fully update after an in-person verification. The IRS systems don't always communicate with each other as quickly as one might expect.

Did you get any paperwork? I did verification last month. They gave me a stamped form. Took exactly 8 days. Nothing showed before that. Then suddenly everything appeared. Did they say anything about your filing method?

When I went through this last year, they actually explained that how you originally filed makes a difference in processing time after verification. E-filed returns generally update faster in their system than paper returns. Did the IRS representative mention anything about this? I've found that asking very specific questions during these appointments can get you much more detailed information about your particular situation.

Been thru this b4. IRS phone lines are impossible rn. Tried calling 14x last week to check status after my verification. Finally used https://claimyr.com and got connected to an actual IRS agent in ~25 mins. They confirmed my verification was processed but still needed another dept to review. At least I know what's happening now instead of checking WMR 5x a day. Tech actually works, saved me hrs of redial hell.

How does this compare to just using the IRS appointment system? I've been trying to decide between scheduling an in-person visit versus continuing to call. Did they ask for any personal info before connecting you? Seems too convenient compared to my past experiences with the IRS.

I need to clarify something important about calling the IRS: • Regular call method = 30-45 min hold time IF you get through at all • Most callers get disconnected due to "high call volume" • Claimyr just navigates the phone tree and waits on hold FOR you • You get a call back when an actual agent is on the line • Much more efficient than wasting half your day with redial attempts

I've been through this verification process twice in the past three years. First time took 9 business days to see updates, second time took 12 business days. The key thing is to check your account transcript rather than WMR - the transcript updates first, and you'll see a TC 971 code when they've processed your verification. I'd recommend checking your transcript next Tuesday or Wednesday - that would be right around the 9 business day mark from your verification. Patience is definitely required when dealing with the IRS, but in-person verification is the fastest route.

I'm wondering... did they tell you specifically what triggered the verification requirement? Was it something about your business filing that might have raised a flag? I'm asking because I may be in a similar situation and want to prepare myself for what might be coming.

I had nearly the identical situation last year with my small business return. Verified in person, then nothing for weeks. I kept checking online and calling with no updates. Turns out there was a secondary review happening that nobody told me about. When I finally got through to someone, they said my return was flagged for a "business rule exception" that required manual review after the identity verification. By the time I found this out, it had already been resolved, but I wasted so much time and stress not knowing. Document everything from your visit and be prepared for a longer wait than they tell you.
