Filed 3/15, identity verification delay - now stuck in IRS limbo - when will I get my refund?
I filed my taxes on March 15th and got a message saying my return was received with an expected refund date of April 12th. But then around April 5th I got this letter from the IRS saying I needed to verify my identity. I went online and verified through my IRS account that same day. Now when I check my refund status it just says "we apologize your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal time frame" and nothing else. Does anyone know when this message typically changes or updates? It's been over 3 weeks since I verified my identity. And why would they suddenly need extra verification from me when I've been filing the same way for years? Is this happening to a lot of people this year?

This is actually pretty common this year. The IRS has significantly increased identity verification requirements as part of their fraud prevention measures. When you complete the verification, your return essentially gets put back in the processing queue, but not necessarily at the front. The "delayed beyond normal timeframe" message usually means your return is in a manual review queue. This can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks after verification to resolve, though some people see updates faster. A few things that might help: - Check your tax transcript (not just the Where's My Refund tool) as it often shows updates before the WMR tool - Look for code 570 (refund hold) followed by code 571 (hold released) on your transcript - Make sure you verified through the official IRS site and not a phishing attempt Many people are experiencing this same delay this year, especially early filers. The IRS is dealing with staffing shortages, continued pandemic backlog, and enhanced security measures.

•Thanks for the detailed response! I'll check my transcript. Is there a specific place I need to look for those codes?

•You'll want to look at your account transcript for the current tax year. The codes will be listed in the transactions section with dates next to them. Code 570 means there's a hold, and 571 means it's been released. If you see a 846 code, that's your refund being issued! 🙌

•Just checked and I do see a 570 code from April 10th but no 571 yet. I guess I'm still in the waiting game 😩

•I had the exact same situation. Took me 7 weeks after verification to finally see movement. Hang in there!

I was in the same situation trying to figure out what was going on with my refund after ID verification. Spent hours on tax forums trying to understand transcript codes and what all those dates meant. Then I found this AI tool called taxr.ai that analyzed everything for me. It explained exactly what was happening with my return and what stage it was in the processing pipeline. So much better than trying to piece together random forum advice. The tool told me exactly when to expect movement and what would happen next. Seriously, check out https://taxr.ai - saved me so much stress!

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It analyzes your entire transcript and breaks everything down in plain English. Shows you all the important codes and dates with explanations, tells you if there are any issues, and gives you a timeline for when things should happen next. WAY more helpful than the vague messages from the IRS website.

•OMG I just tried it and it's amazing! My transcript had all these weird codes and I had no idea what any of it meant. The tool explained everything step by step and now I know exactly what's happening with my refund. EVERYONE dealing with confusing IRS stuff needs to use this!!

•Is it free? Sounds to good to be true tbh

•It's not free but it's worth every penny. I spent like 10+ hours trying to understand my transcript before I found it. Would have paid double for the peace of mind.

I had the same issue with the identity verification and endless waiting. After 5 weeks of silence, I used Claimyr.com to get an actual human at the IRS on the phone. Got connected within 20 minutes when I had previously spent HOURS getting busy signals. The agent told me my return was just sitting in a queue and they manually moved it forward. I had my refund 5 days later! Absolutely the best money I've spent all year considering I was waiting on thousands in my refund.

•did u actually talk to someone? ive heard the irs dosent even pick up calls

•Yes! That's the whole point of the service. They navigate the IRS phone system for you and call you when they get an agent on the line. Then you just pick up and talk to the IRS directly. It was the only way I was able to actually speak to a human.

•How much did this cost? I'm desperate at this point

•Honestly, it was totally worth it to finally get answers after weeks of being in limbo. Can't remember the exact price but compared to the stress of waiting for my multi-thousand dollar refund, it was a no-brainer.

•Just used this and got through to the IRS in 25 mins after trying for WEEKS on my own. The agent released my hold right there on the phone! 🙏

The IRS is a JOKE this year. I filed in February, had to verify in March, and STILL waiting. Called them 17 times and never got through. They're just sitting on our money collecting interest while we wait. 😡

•For real! I don't understand how they can just hold our refunds for months with zero explanation. If we owed THEM money they'd be charging penalties from day one!

•This is what I'm worried about... I can't afford to wait months. I was counting on that money.

•Exactly! And the most frustrating part is you cant even get answers. Its just a black hole where your money disappears and your stuck checking a useless status bar every day hoping for a change 🙄

After identity verification, it took me about 5 weeks to see any movement. When it changed, it went straight from that message to "Your refund has been approved" and I got my direct deposit 2 days later. Just be patient, it will come through eventually.

The ID verification is their way of making us jump thru extra hoops so they can hold onto our money longer. They know exactly who we are, they just don't wanna pay up. Classic government BS 🤷♂️

•Preach! 👏 They've got all our W2 info already, they know exactly who we are

•Actually, identity theft related to tax returns is a HUGE problem. In 2023, the IRS prevented over $5 billion in fraudulent refunds. The verification steps are annoying but necessary.

•Yeah right, thats what they want u to think. If it was really about fraud they wouldnt make legitimate filers wait months for there refunds. its about the $$$

Have you checked your transcripts? Sometimes they update before the WMR tool does. Log into your IRS account and look at your account transcript for this year - it might show processing steps that aren't visible on the refund status page.

I had to do identity verification too. Are you SURE you completed it correctly? My sister thought she did hers, but she actually needed to submit additional documents they requested. Double check your IRS online account to make sure there aren't any additional steps they need from you.

•Thanks for this! I just checked again and my verification says complete, but I'll keep an eye out for any additional requests.

Those identity verification letters are being sent out WAY more this year. I'm a tax preparer and about 40% of my clients had to verify, compared to maybe 5% in previous years. The IRS apparently implemented new security measures after last year's fraud issues.

•Interesting! Is there any pattern to who's getting selected? Certain income levels or deduction types?

•From what I've seen, early filers (especially in January) seem to get flagged more often. Also returns with earned income credit, child tax credit, or recovery rebate credits. But I've also had simple returns with none of those get flagged, so there's definitely other criteria they're not disclosing.

Call them!!!!! I was stuck in the same situation for 8 weeks after verification. Finally called and found out they were missing a document from me that they never actually requested! Got it resolved in 10 minutes and had my refund a week later.

•I tried calling but can never get through. It's either busy or the automated system says they're experiencing high call volume and hangs up on me.

•Yeah the phone system is horrendous. I had to use that Claimyr service (claimyr.com) to get through. It was the only way I actually reached a human. Expensive but worth it since they were just sitting on my refund for no reason.

Try checking your transcript instead of WMR. Go to irs.gov, log in to your account, and look at your 2024 Account Transcript. Look for these codes: - 570: Refund hold placed - 571: Refund hold released - 846: Refund issued Also check for any TC 420 code which indicates an audit or examination. The transcript will tell you WAY more than the refund tracker ever will.

I'm dealing with the exact same thing! Verified my identity on April 2nd and still stuck with that same message. I'm beyond frustrated at this point. Did you try calling the IRS?

•I tried a few times but just got automated messages saying they're too busy and to call back later. Never actually talked to a person.

•Same here. It's like they've designed the system to be as frustrating as possible. I'm going to try again tomorrow at the crack of dawn when they first open.

When I had this issue, I went to the Taxpayer Advocate Service for help. They can sometimes intervene if you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay. Worth a shot if you're desperate!

After weeks of being stuck with that exact message, I tried taxr.ai in desperation. It analyzed my transcript and explained that I actually had a code 420 audit review that wasn't showing up in the regular refund tracker. The tool told me exactly what was happening behind the scenes and gave me a realistic timeline instead of the vague IRS message. Totally worth checking out (https://taxr.ai) if you're in limbo like I was.

•Why would anyone trust a random website with their tax info? Seems sketchy.

•You don't give them personal info, just upload your transcript that you already downloaded from the IRS site. It just analyzes the codes and dates - same info you'd be posting screenshots of on Reddit asking for help anyway.

•Oh that makes more sense. I might actually check it out since I'm so confused by all these codes on my transcript.

If you have financial hardship because of the delayed refund, make sure to mention that when you call. They can expedite in some cases if you're facing eviction, utility shutoff, etc. You need to use the specific phrase "financial hardship" though.

Last year I had to wait 4 months after identity verification. This year only 3 weeks. There's absolutely no consistency with the IRS. it's all just luck of the draw on who processes your return and how backed up they are that week.

My theory is that they're targeting specific types of returns for extra scrutiny. Do you claim EIC, child tax credit, or have self-employment income? Those seem to trigger more verification requests.
0 coins
Victoria Stark
•I did claim EIC this year, so maybe that's why!

Jason Brewer
•EIC is the #1 trigger for additional review. The IRS estimated that 25% of all EIC claims have errors (sometimes innocent mistakes, sometimes fraud). They've really cracked down on it the last few years.

I'm going through the exact same thing! Filed early March, got the ID verification letter around the same time as you, completed it immediately, and now I'm stuck with that same "delayed beyond normal timeframe" message. It's so frustrating because like you said, I've been filing the same way for years with no issues. From reading through all these responses, it sounds like this is unfortunately super common this year. The transcript checking advice seems really helpful - I'm going to log into my IRS account tonight and look for those codes everyone mentioned (570, 571, 846). It's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this, even though it sucks that so many of us are dealing with these delays. Hopefully we'll both see some movement soon! Keep us updated if your status changes.
