How long for refund after Identity Verification Letter from IRS? Verified 3 weeks ago, still waiting
Got a letter from the IRS back in late September saying I needed to verify my identity before they could process my refund. I submitted my 2024 taxes back in June and had been wondering why it was taking so long. I completed the ID verification online through id.me about 3 weeks ago, and the IRS website confirmed my verification was successful. My refund status still says 'processing' on Where's My Refund. Has anyone gone through this? How much longer should I expect to wait? This is my first time dealing with this identity verification thing and I'm getting anxious about when I'll see my money.

This happened to me last year. After verifying your identity, it typically takes 9 weeks for the IRS to process your return and issue your refund. That's their official timeline, but in my experience it came in just over 6 weeks. The 'processing' status won't update for a while - mine was stuck like that for about 4 weeks after verification before suddenly changing to approved. Then I got my direct deposit 5 days later. Make sure you keep checking your transcript on the IRS website if you can access it - sometimes it'll show movement before the Where's My Refund tool updates. Look for code 570 (refund hold) being replaced with 571 (hold released) and then 846 (refund issued). Hang in there! The waiting is frustrating but at least you're verified now which is the biggest hurdle.

•Thanks for the info! I hadn't thought about checking my transcript. Just tried to access it and it says I need to wait 10 days after verification before I can view it. I'll try again next week.

•No problem! Yeah, they have all these weird waiting periods. Let me know when you can see your transcript and I can help you interpret the codes if needed.

•Same exact situation for me last year, took exactly 7 weeks from verification to DD hitting my account. The waiting is the worst part fr

•7 weeks?? 😩 That's so long. Did your WMR tool update during that time or just suddenly change when it was done?

•Mine was stuck on "processing" for like 6 weeks then boom one day it changed to approved and money was in my account 3 days later. WMR is trash honestly

•FYI - I waited 11 weeks last year after ID verification. It really depends on what other issues they might find with your return during processing. Not trying to scare you but just setting realistic expectations!

I had this same issue last yeer. Honestly, going through forums and reading all the different answers and guesses about timeframes drove me crazy. I ended up using taxr.ai to understand what was actually happening with my transcript and ID verification. It translated all the code gibberish into plain english and gave me an actual timeline based on my specific situation. Way better than trying to play detective with random forum posts. Here's the site: https://taxr.ai - seriously saved my sanity.

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It reads your entire transcript and breaks down every single code, date, and entry. Then it gives you an actual explanation of where you are in the process, what's holding things up, and when you can expect your refund based on your specific situation - not just general timelines. You can also ask it questions about your specific case and it'll answer based on your actual data. Way more helpful than trying to google random transcript codes at 2am lol

•HOLY CRAP I JUST TRIED THIS!! Seriously the most helpful thing ever for dealing with the IRS. I've been stuck in processing hell for 2 months and this finally explained what the problem is. Worth every penny - wish I'd known about this sooner instead of wasting hours on these forums 🙌

After getting the ID verification letter, I couldnt get through to anyone at the IRS for weeks. I finally used Claimyr.com and got a callback from an actual IRS agent within 30 minutes. They confirmed my verification was recieved and told me exactly when to expect my refund. The agent even put a note on my account to expedite since I was having financial hardship. Talking to a live person solved so much - totally worth using the service since it saved me hours of hold music and frustration!

•Another "miracle" IRS service? How do we know this isnt just snake oil?

•I get the skepticism. I was too. But its literally just a service that navigates the IRS phone tree for you and holds your place in line. When an agent is available, they call you. Nothing crazy - just saves you from being stuck on hold for 3 hours. The rep I talked to told me exactly when my refund would be processed after the ID verification (it was 6 weeks for me).

•Can confirm this works. Used it 3 times now. Much better than listening to that awful hold music for hours only to get disconnected 🤬

Took me exactly 8 weeks and 3 days after ID verification last year. But my sister only waited 4 weeks this year for hers. I think it depends on what time of year and how backed up they are. Good luck!

The IRS is such a jooooke 🤡 I verified my identity in March and didnt get my refund until AUGUST. Five whole months. They don't even follow their own timelines half the time. Call them every week and keep bugging them, its the only way to get movement sometimes.

•This. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with the IRS. They'll let your return sit forever unless you keep calling and checking status.

•How do you even get through to them?? I've called the number on my letter 17 times and either get disconnected or told the wait is over 2 hours

•You gotta call right when they open at 7am Eastern. Even then it's a crapshoot. I had to try for like 3 days in a row before I got through.

•Pro tip: Use the taxpayer advocate service number instead. Their wait times are usually way shorter and they can access the same info.

Check your transcript! The WMR tool is often delayed. I verified my identity and my transcript updated with new codes way before the WMR tool showed anything.

Have you tried calling them? 1-800-829-1040. Sometimes they can speed things up if you explain your situation. Especially if you're experiencing financial hardship.

I verified my identity in April and STILL haven't received my refund. It's October now. Every time I call they say "it's processing" and I should "wait another 60 days." The IRS is broken beyond repair at this point.

•Y'all need to contact your congressional representatives. They have special channels to the IRS. I was stuck for 4 months, called my congressman's office, and magically my refund appeared 2 weeks later.

Check whats showing under your tax transcript. If you see code 570 that means theres a hold. If it changes to 571 that means hold released. 846 is refund issued. The dates next to these codes tell you when action was taken or will be taken.

Has anyone tried taxr.ai? Just saw it recommended elsewhere and wondering if its worth it for figuring out the status of ID verification refunds?

•I used it when I was in ID verification hell! It immediately showed me that my verification had been accepted but that they were doing an additional review of my W2s. Saved me tons of time trying to decipher those stupid codes on my transcript.

•Is that the AI thing that reads your transcript? I was kinda sketched out by it initially but heard good things

•Yeah it reads your transcript but also tells you what's actually happening with your return in normal human language. It predicted my refund date almost to the day. Made the whole process waaay less stressful.

The IRS website says 9 weeks after verification, but I got mine in 5 weeks. Just dont count on that money until you see it in your account!

What kind of letter did you get exactly? Was it 5071C, 6331C, or 4883C? Each one has different verification requirements and potentially different timelines.

•It was a 5071C letter. Didn't realize the different letters might have different timelines.

•5071C is the standard ID verification letter. Generally 6-9 weeks after verification for processing to complete. If you verified 3 weeks ago, you've probably got another 3-6 weeks to go, unfortunately.

I was so sick of waiting after ID verification that I ended up using Claimyr.com to get an IRS agent on the phone. They managed to confirm that everything looked good with my verification and told me my refund would be issued in 2 weeks. It was the best money I've spent dealing with this tax season nightmare! Got someone on the phone in 45 mins when I'd been trying for weeks.

•This is good to know, thanks! Did they charge a lot? I'm desperate at this point to just talk to an actual human about my return.

•It was totally reasonable considering how many hours of my life I wasted trying to get through myself. They basically just wait on hold for you and then call you when an agent is on the line. So worth it when you're dealing with refund delays.

•Just tried it, got a callback with an actual IRS agent in 37 minutes! They confirmed my verification was processed and said I should have my refund within 3 weeks. Such a relief to finally talk to someone. Thanks for the recommendation!

I went through the exact same thing last year - got the 5071C letter in September, verified through ID.me, and then had to wait what felt like forever! The "processing" status on Where's My Refund is basically useless during this time. Mine took about 7 weeks total from verification to actually getting the direct deposit. The most helpful thing I did was check my account transcript every week or so once I could access it (you're right that there's a waiting period after verification). Look for those status codes people mentioned - 570 means there's still a hold, 571 means it's released, and 846 is when they actually issue your refund. Since you verified 3 weeks ago, you're probably looking at another 3-6 weeks based on what I've seen. I know it's frustrating but at least you got through the ID verification part which is usually the biggest hurdle. Hang in there!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same timeline. I'm trying to stay patient but it's tough when you're expecting that money. Good to know about checking the transcript weekly - I'll definitely start doing that once I can access it. Did you notice any pattern with when the codes would update, like certain days of the week or times of month?

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Got my 5071C letter in October, verified through ID.me about 2 weeks ago, and I'm also stuck on that "processing" status. It's so frustrating not knowing when to expect anything. Reading through everyone's experiences here, it sounds like I should prepare for at least another month of waiting. The timeline seems to vary so much - some people get it in 4-6 weeks, others wait 3+ months. I wish the IRS would just give us a realistic timeframe instead of these vague "up to 9 weeks" estimates. At least now I know to check my transcript once I can access it and look for those status codes everyone mentioned. Thanks for posting this question - it's helpful to know I'm not alone in this waiting game!

•You're definitely not alone in this! I'm actually dealing with something similar - verified about 3 weeks ago and still waiting too. It's so nerve-wracking not knowing when to expect anything. From what I've been reading here, it sounds like the transcript codes are really the key to understanding what's actually happening behind the scenes. I'm planning to try that taxr.ai thing someone mentioned once I can access my transcript - seems like it might help decode all the confusing IRS jargon and give a more realistic timeline than just guessing. Hang in there, we'll get through this waiting period eventually!

I'm in almost the exact same boat! Got my 5071C letter in early October and completed the ID.me verification about 2.5 weeks ago. Still showing "processing" on Where's My Refund and it's driving me crazy not knowing when to expect anything. From reading everyone's experiences here, it sounds like 6-9 weeks is pretty standard after verification, but the range is so wide it's hard to plan around. I'm definitely going to try checking my transcript once the waiting period is up - seems like that's way more accurate than the WMR tool. Has anyone noticed if filing early vs late in the year affects the processing time after ID verification? I'm wondering if they're less backed up now compared to peak tax season. Either way, glad to know I'm not the only one dealing with this frustrating waiting game!

•I'm in the same exact situation! Filed early in July, got the 5071C letter in late September, and verified through ID.me about 3 weeks ago too. It's such a relief to see so many others going through this - I was starting to think something was wrong with my specific case. From what I'm reading here, it seems like the time of year doesn't make a huge difference for ID verification processing times. The IRS appears to have a pretty consistent 6-9 week timeline regardless. Though I'm hoping since we're not in peak filing season maybe they're slightly less backed up? I'm definitely going to check my transcript as soon as I can access it and look for those status codes everyone mentioned. Might also try that taxr.ai thing to help decode what's actually happening. This waiting is brutal but at least we know we're not alone in this process!

I'm in a very similar situation! Got my 5071C letter in late September too and completed ID verification through ID.me about 2 weeks ago. Still stuck on "processing" status and getting anxious about the timeline. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and nerve-wracking - sounds like anywhere from 4-11 weeks is possible after verification, which is such a wide range! I'm definitely going to start checking my transcript once I can access it to look for those status codes (570, 571, 846) that people mentioned. One thing I'm wondering - has anyone noticed if the IRS processes ID verification cases faster during certain times of the year? Since we're not in peak tax season now, I'm hoping maybe they're less backed up than they would be in spring. But from what I'm reading it seems like the timeline is pretty consistent regardless. This waiting game is so stressful when you're counting on that refund money! At least it's good to know we're all going through the same thing and the verification part is behind us.

•I'm going through this too! Got my 5071C letter around the same time and verified about 3 weeks ago. The uncertainty is definitely the worst part - you just don't know if it'll be 4 weeks or 11 weeks! From what I've gathered reading through this thread, the transcript really seems to be the key to getting real information. The WMR tool is pretty much useless during this phase. I'm also curious about the seasonal timing question - logically you'd think they'd be less backed up now, but it sounds like ID verification might have its own separate processing queue that runs at a consistent pace year-round. Hang in there - at least we know the verification hurdle is done and we're all in the same frustrating waiting boat together!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got my 5071C letter in early October, completed ID verification through ID.me about 2.5 weeks ago, and I'm also stuck on that dreaded "processing" status. It's honestly driving me insane not knowing when to expect my refund. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been both helpful and anxiety-inducing - the timeline seems to vary so wildly from 4 weeks to 4+ months! I'm definitely going to check my transcript once I can access it and look for those status codes everyone keeps mentioning (570, 571, 846). The waiting is absolutely brutal, especially when you're counting on that money. But it's somewhat comforting to know so many others are in the same boat. At least we got through the ID verification part which seems to be the biggest hurdle. Fingers crossed we're all on the shorter end of that timeline! Has anyone found that calling actually helps speed things up, or is it just a waste of time trying to get through to them?

•From what I've seen in this thread and other places, calling seems to be hit or miss. Some people say it helps, especially if you can get through to an actual agent who can put notes on your account or confirm your verification status. But getting through is the real challenge - sounds like you need to call right when they open at 7am ET and even then it's not guaranteed. I've seen a few people mention using services like Claimyr to get through faster, which might be worth it if you're really anxious for an update. But honestly, from reading all these experiences, it seems like the process just takes the time it takes regardless of whether you call or not. The transcript checking seems to be the most reliable way to actually track progress once you can access it. I'm about 3 weeks post-verification too, so we're probably looking at another 3-6 weeks based on what everyone else has shared. The waiting really is the worst part!

I'm dealing with this exact situation right now too! Got my 5071C letter in mid-September and completed ID verification through ID.me about 3 weeks ago. Still stuck on the "processing" status and it's so frustrating not having a clear timeline. From reading everyone's experiences here, it sounds like 6-9 weeks after verification is pretty standard, though some people have waited much longer. The transcript checking seems to be key - I'm counting down the days until I can access mine and look for those status codes (570, 571, 846) that everyone mentioned. One thing that's been helpful from this thread is learning that the WMR tool is basically useless during this phase. At least knowing that saves me from obsessively checking it every day! I'm also considering trying that taxr.ai service once I can access my transcript, since it sounds like it explains everything in plain English rather than cryptic IRS codes. The waiting is absolutely brutal when you're counting on that money, but it's reassuring to see so many others going through the same thing. We'll get through this eventually!
